  • Continuing our sailing around the world adventures, we sail to two gems in Croatia little visited by yachties: Korcula, the birthplace of one of the world's greatest sailors Marco Polo, and Mljet National Park, the first marine park in the Mediterranean.
    Along the way we visit Vis' Green Grotto and have a pleasant surprise crossing paths with our previous crew mate Kalena!
    And if you have any advice on how to stop a mooring buoy banging away at your bow, we'd love your thoughts - please leave a comment below!

    I took one of those foam noodles that people use in pools (one with a hole down the middle) and cut a split along its entire length. I slip the noodle over the pendant, positioning it near the bouy and either use zip ties or small bungee cords to secure in onto the pendant. The noodle acts as a "stiff arm" and usually (but not always) keeps the bouy away from the hull. It also keeps it from tangling in the mooring chain and makes the pendant easier to pick-up.

    To touch the Boje: It’s a problem of the Steep form of the front. Make a e.g. 1.5 m flexible enough pivot with a ring at the end and some mounting at the boat so that the lines to the boat are carried down 1m more in front of the boat. At upcoming wind the flexible pivot should flexible enough to to handle that. (Sorry for my English haven’t so quickly the vocabulary). I can make you a drawing if needed.

    drop a sturn anchor with just 5 meters of chain the rest rope pull the boat away from your morring mate that simple

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому

      Great idea, we need to invest in a kedge anchor. Unfortunately this won't work in areas where mooring buoys are very close together (typical in the med) as any yachts swinging on the other buoys will hit us when the wind shifts. Still good advice for where we can!

    Terrific episode and journey! I'd love to see more drone footage (I thought you had one) and country specific foodie segments please! What spices do Croatian chefs use? What wines, beers and spirits are served? Any local customs? Following you daily, cheers

      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому +1

      Hi Dale, thanks for the suggestions, we have 'discussions' about the types of content that would be of interest, so good to know what you like. And as much as we'd like, it's not always possible to fly the drone, especially in national parks like Mljet due to strict regulations. And we're not willing to launch from the yacht as limited space, so have to take it to land, which we are trying to do more and more. Cheers, Fil

      Wines: red - Plavac Mali, white- Grk. Spices are regional, a few of my favorites are garlic, onions, wine, sea salt, paprika. Spirits, that’s easy Rakija or fruit Brandy’s, Dunja is my favorite (quince). The most common are Slivovica (plum) & Losavaca (like grappa). Beer or Pivo - Karlovacko is my favorite. A great Montenegrin beer is Niksicko. Try having a Radler, very thirst quenching on a hot day.

    You dont have much of a bow pulpit. Extending a pole and attaching the line to it would solve your issue. Like your whisker pole or something like that.

  • @vintagecreationschannel655
    @vintagecreationschannel655 2 роки тому

    bouncing up against a mooring bouy.....lash a fishing rod/oar or other long peice of equipment to the pullpit and have a line going vertically from the top of the mooring bouy about 3-4 feet along the pole to keep it 3-4 feet away from your bow

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому

      Hi Michael, we do when we can, however in this case the line holding the mooring ball to the sea floor block was too short to lift to deck. And thanks for the tip on SUP...

    What time of year was this filmed? We were there in June and place was packed, looks empty in your video. We could not get into Hvar at all not even to the fuel quay for diesel. Also found Croatia VERY expensive!

      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому

      This was early June. And yes even then Hvar was packed, we had the last berth available. We also found Croatia very expensive, although not as expensive as southern Italy!

    Pull the buoy on board the boat and attach lower If you can failing that anchor

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому

      We pull the buoys on deck when we can, but this one's line to the sea floor was too short to allow it. We did try and anchor in the few places in Diamond Beach shallow enough, but we dragged each time due to the sea grass floor, so ended up having to go on the buoy.

      fair enough, but I believe he was taken prisoner there and not born there. who knows. Another great debate to pop out of a little nice video made by OZ. LOL

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому +2

      Both the Croatia Pilot and the Korculans sounded certain of it (and considering Korcula was part of the Venetian republic at the time we didn't question it, presuming that Marco Polo being Venetian meant Venice Republic, not Town), but yes we've just check and sounds like it's still being disputed. Sounds like the Italians in particular weren't happy with the Croatians claiming it!

    • @bojanhorvat6455
      @bojanhorvat6455 3 роки тому

      Italy didn’t exist when Marco Polo was born, nether did Croatia. He was a Venetian, Korcula was a Venetian town as were many others on both Croatian and Italian coast. Some experts speculate he was born in Korcula others disagree, no prof of ether.

    Put a drone out the back

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому +1

      Would love to, but that would mean taking on and off the yacht, good way of eventually having the drone ditching in the water.

    • @ape3774
      @ape3774 6 років тому

      Drone as in A sea anchor, not Drone as in a flying shotgun target lol (youtubers ha), I live in an area where we have strong tides and wind over tide and constant banging against buoy is a pain not just to sleep but damage to the yachts hull, we use a drone, normally something like a bucket on a line off the back of the boat, This pulls the boat away from the problem, If that doesn't work try setting your kedge.

  • @mannysilva4454
    @mannysilva4454 6 років тому

    if you add 20 or 30 feet of line to the mooring ball line, it will be enough for the boat to keep its distance from the ball

    • @Expedition_Tranquilo
      @Expedition_Tranquilo  6 років тому

      Thanks Manny, but that's not always possible in the Med as the mooring buoys are too close, typically allowing just enough distance between boats. We have at times tried it but with no wind our yacht still comes up to the buoy.
