I love these stories of Black History. It gets lost as time goes on. I remember learning of the “Yellow Fever” when I was younger but sure don’t remember the heroisms of the Black community that risked their lives and own money to take care of white folk…. I’ll be sure to pass this along to my grandchildren and theirs! Thank you. 😊
Interestingly, when all the rumors about profiteering and whatnot were going on, Benjamin Rush (who stayed in the city and saw what happened) also came to the defense of the Black population, refuting the accusations and describing their heroism in the newspapers.
@Rolling Withthepunches it mattered a lot back in the day, and it's the fact that these people disregarded that to help people despite the standards of the times that makes them still worthy of praise today.
@Rolling Withthepunches and people weren't helpful. They struggled to find volunteers, so they went to the black people and asked them to risk their lives, then asked for more black help for free, then got mad and spread rumors of them capitalizing off the misery when they asked for money to pay the people risking their lives everyday. And still short changed them. What video did you watch?
@@znuffyztruggles5744 Thank you. 😊
This man's voice is amazing! Great job to the team!
I was thinking the same exact thing myself when I heard him speak. He would be Excellent at Audiobooks. I’d listen to
him reading those books for sure
Agreed, it definitely catches one’s attention!
Totally agree. I could listen to him talk all day. Great job team😄👏
Thank you!!
@@JamesTroupActor my favorite narrator 🥰
I just wanna say that this man has a GREAT speaking/story telling voice, I'd love to hear more from James!
Thanks Shea!
Yellow fever is spread by a species of mosquito common to areas of Africa and South America. Vaccination is recommended before traveling to certain areas.
Mild cases cause fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Serious cases may cause fatal heart, liver, and kidney conditions.
No specific treatment for the disease exists. Efforts focus on managing symptoms and limiting complications.
Thanks for racomanding doctur
@@paulwaltersheherfeministvl521 Typical feminist screeching. Shut your gull trap.
And prevention (vaccines, as you said)
Symptomatic treatment is for hodiernal time so primitive. It must be the etiological and pathogenetic pathes, and not the path of applying rags to a hot head.
Please continue to do this series with this man. He does a great job and his research is top notch.
That’s all the buzzfeed research team. I’m just the guy that reads the words they write!
There is some belief that the use of vinegar and smoke might’ve helped because it repelled mosquitoes to a degree
That's what I was wondering when he mentioned the bonfires and cannons.
I can attest that tobacco smoke does make you less likely to be bitten by mosquitos. Whenever me and my buddies go camping the smokers never get bitten nearly as often as the non-smokers.
I appreciate the yellow handkerchief. A nice touch.
😋
Just give this guy a channel already
He has one! Just search James Troup and it'll come up
That’s what I’m screaming! 😂
@@trash_cats_tv Thank you! I’ve paused this video to subscribe.
I love his narration! It almost reminds me of the twilight zone. Great job!
Thank ya Emily! ☺️
Who cares what the subject matter is. Jame’s voice makes you melt.
Just you wait until my video on BUTTER! 😂
amazing to think like i live in Philly and go to old city a lot, and yet this is the epicenter hundreds of years ago, and now its just simple parks with beautiful trees and vibrant life. its hard to imagine this happened in this city I grew up in.
I’m from Philly too Washington Square Park was built on top of a mass grave of yellow fever victims
It happened again with Spanish Influenza in 1918, too. Bodies in the streets, running out of coffins, mass graves, the whole nine yards.
I remember reading a chapter book about this in middle school called Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. It was pretty good from what I remember
My man is back! This is gonna be good.
Very well presented and narrated, James! Keep it up, I love Haunting History :)
I can’t remember how old I was, but I read the historical fiction book Fever 1793 and it sparked my interest in this part of history. So dark when we didn’t know about all the ways to help, so many lives lost!
That’s suit looks amazing, James!
Damn the story at 12:08 hits.
I didn’t think we would get so much detail.
Man, it SUCKS when history repeats itself 😫😣😞
Agreed but when it does at least we can learn more in how to, prevent, prepare, or even stop it from spreading and get rid of it or at least manage it. History repeating itself gives us a chance to change how we handled things and make them better in the future.....still sucks though
Covid doesn't turn you yellow donut
But only if we learn from it but that's not the case look at Corona
@@wiebekieboom7817 true but just think of how much worse it could have been back in the old days without our knowledge of medicine. Thanks to having so many repeating viruses we now have cures for many illnesses that would have killed us although it's still sad to hear how many people died to any virus
@@1deadlylunarwolfgod okay there you're right I admit but still it spread very easily over the whole world
love the narrator's voice. is there any place i can check sources? i found the cannon part really funny but couldn't find anything online to backup that claim.
This was a good one, thanks buzzfeed.
We demand more narration with James!
Love James. TY for the content.
Thanks for watching!
Welcome back man love to see you tell these stories
Thanks!!
You have the perfect voice for this, James! Awesome video
Good voice for narrating
Very interesting 🤔.I like history stories. Keep up with the series ☺️☺️.
I hope we get more videos with this gentleman
That was cool, very educational and ofcourse sad that so many lives were lost. Thank you 🌟✌
Awesome video. I've lived outside Philly most of my life and I've never heard about this. Crazy
James: *Tells me a horrible story of mass human suffering*
Me: mmmmmm
One of the best narrators out there
😂 Thanks!
James James James 👏👏👏 love haunting history and both of the narrators!
The symptoms of this are HORRIFIC!! Bless their souls 🥺🙏🏻🙏🏻
My man's back ❤
james, you are so beyond cool. you could read the phone book and make it sound interesting - lucky for us, you pick the coolest topics too.
Love this narrator 💖
LOVE your channel..
I love your content bro
Thanks bro!
I love haunting history! But I really hope that we get more out there episodes!!
Uh this is awesome! Can we get more James Troup videos?
I saw the thumbnail and I knew its the yellow fever I love this history of this disease it's so morbid
Would definitely listen to podcasts with his voice.
Gah. I could listen to you talk all day. I wish you could narrate my thoughts for me…your voice is much more calming than mine! ❤️ Please keep doing what you’re doing! And maybe audio books?!
Did you know that Memphis Tennessee was hit by the yellow fever hard and the entire town was quarantine
Such an interesting video!!!
James' needs to start narrating audio books.
Thank you for the important hidtory.
When I lived in the New Orleans area, it was not uncommon for road resurfacing or any digging to uncover mass graves from yellow fever epidemics of the past.
Don’t blame them it would be awful to risk any chance of the disease to reoccur
Your voice is like cinnamon
Its so warm and comfy
YEEEAAAAAH! He’s back!
I'm a little surprised that Alexander Hamilton, who grew up in the Caribbean, didn't recognise the illness and lead the charge out of the city.
New Orleans had been having almost annual yellow fever epidemics since 1825, possibly earlier. I don't think records were kept in New Orleans reliably before then.
Okay wow, this man has a great voice!
Excellent
God his voice is amazing I can barely concentrate. I feel like he's reading me a really sick story book
Thanks! 😂
WAIT A MINUTE ISNT THAT THE DHAR MANN ACTOR JAMES TROUP??
🤫 Don’t tell Dhar…
@@JamesTroupActor secret is safe with me
As someone who's been in full organ failure before, this is terrifying.
The heroic doctor sent half the city to the next world with his heroic efforts, bleeding the afflicted.
I love hearing about pandemics before modern times! We hear about the huge ones, such as the bubonic plague, but it's important to remember there have been countless pandemics for diseases we no longer worry about today. And the pandemics we talk about depend very much on WHO the victims are. :(
Buzzfeed did the right thing getting this narrator bc his voice 😍
James has a gorgeous voice. He could read a phone book and make it sound like a biographical account.
My dad read the phone book to us as children. 😂

Is the beard color real tho? It’s glorious
I had a fear of of yellow fever already but this is even more horrifying.

Hey, does anyone know the name of the artwork at 5:34? The one with the man and woman? I'm very curious and I can't find it!
What you guys should do next is a documentary of the hello kitty murder case
he has a movie voice
His glasses have no lenses in them
Your eyes have no eyes in them.
Nice
Yikes.
Sounds to me like these people were turning into the Simpsons
Nice.
does this man not have lenses in his frames?
good video tho
Glare..i have big bright lights on me…you wouldn’t be able to see my eyes with the lenses in. It’s an old film trick. Lol
On the one hand, blood was pumped out, on the other hand, they were poisoned with mercury. So wonderful life in such pretty conditions. You will not envy such unfortunate doomed.
I don't remember if we covered this in American History or not. There should be at least 4 full years dedicated to History, both World and National, and electives dedicated to other aspects, like Women's History, African-American History, Weird History.
Oak bark, rotten wine, mercury salts - hmm ... what an unsurpassed delicate bouquet! What else is missing? Donkey manure?
This is a Dhar man actor
Garlic, cigars, wine, camphor, vinegar and fumigations by incense - these are not at all strange methods, compared with excessive and violent bloodletting and mercury poisoning.
"Putrid exhalations" sounds like the name of a bad teenage punk band 🤭
More about disease!
are those glasses real?
It was ridiculously unfair to the black population of Philly but remember the total ignorance of the people and so-called doctors of the times. We can't really learn much from this outbreak as everyone was ignorant of the cause and control of the disease. It was not rationally motivated but done out of ignorance. Everyone died equally ...
Is it possible that if Americans[and surrounding colonies of other countries] never imported enslaved people that they may have not had either malaria or yellow fever?
Or racism. ☺️
They still would have, as long as mosquitoes could hitch rides on ships… Yellow fever and malaria don’t care about race, they’re more than happy to infect anyone!
rage
I know him from Dhar Mann

Oh that’s a good one! 😂
As an Asian person - I’m always yellow. No need for any yellow fever
and thus the simpsons was created!
not trying to make fun of the victims but i thought this would be a funny dark humor joke
My mom refuses to get the covid vaccine but rides the train with a cloth under her mask that has essential oils and some vinegar on it to keep the germs away haha
I love your voice!!! I would listen to you for hours…
Considering that the only decent thing about Philly is Will Smith and Ben Franklin, I kinda think that the yellow fever had irreversible effects on everyone in THAT area.

This guy is an actor of Dhar Mann am I the only one
will u read my eulogy? 😋
