    Most people replace the snorkel for looks or to improve airflow after a tune.
    The factory intake is actually a good bit of kit. It is designed for dust which is what 99% of owners need. That cap on the top is an air spinner which spins out the coarse dust before the air enters the body of the snorkel. The dust drops out at the top, so no maintenance required. It helps reduce the likelihood of dusting a motor which is more than just a problem with the airbox.
    As far as water goes, I've never seen any in a factory snorkel. Maybe it got past a join when you were washing it? Do you use a high pressure sprayer? If water gets in there, it will drop out of the duckbill valve at the bottom of the airbox. No mention of you doing anything about the duckbill valve - most people don't realise it exists - but if you are serious about water crossings, it needs to be blocked off, but them you have the issue that it won't drain any water that does get in.
    Are you seriously wanting to drive through water that is up to or over the bonnet? All those electronics. We used to always run a tarp over the front of the vehicle to reduce the amount of water getting up into the engine bay, it keeps things drier and also prevents any chance of the radiator fan propelling into the radiator.

      Lots of questions in there mate. Yes there is a hole in the air box that needs blocking. No to high pressure near the intake. I live the tropics. The oem snorkel head effectiveness vs the TJM remains to be tested by me. I’ll let you know. And yes about the water crossings with my cape York video you can see how high the water is that I have crossed before 👍

      100%. I'm not sure most people know what a snorkel is designed to achieve.

      Definitely in dusty conditions put a sock over it and every night you park up wash it out with water put back on in morning , don't need it otherwise in non dusty conditions

    Fantastic video mate... Looks very easy... Small note - The one from Toyota is not a Snorkel - It is a Raised Air intake.

    Filter on the intake certainly doesnt hurt. Theyre washable too so saves the paper filter as well.

    Hey Mark.
    I hope you are doing very well these days.
    I've been a bit busy myself lately, still waiting on my campervan, but it's almost ready, I could be having it this week. Providing everything else is still ok on the tuning.
    Cheers, mate, from William.

      @NorthOz I do have 1 video on my channel already of my camper van.
      That was before my fuel pump went.
      The last time I had my campervan video recording was back in 2021.

    Nice video explaining how to change to a snorkel. However I believe that marketing hype is what drives most people to change it, the standard raised air intake can easily be sealed (sikaflex sealant) to prevent water entering the air box. The standard cap at the top is better at removing dust than a front facing snorkel head. I have not seen any credible evidence that aftermarket snorkels improve fuel consumption or produce more power or torque, happy to be corrected.

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  6 місяців тому

      Hi mate. Thanks for the comment. I’d never get one for the fuel economy or power. Which I never claimed I installed it for. It’s purely to make it one continuous piece. I looked at sikaflexing it and the gaps are too big. There are just too many pieces in the oem setup for me to trust the sika to do it’s job. I’m sure with some effort you could make what you have described work but for the time effort and risk of not sealing in some areas, I’d just go a new snorkel. The Safari armax would provide a HP increase with a tune due to the bigger intake. But this one is similar in size to the OE

    Do not get me wrong, but it's crazy how much you have to add or change to make this 4WD 'liveable,' especially considering this vehicle costs almost $80,000. Is it really a great value? It's noisy, not comfortable, comes with rust, and not very well finished. In the end, it seems you're paying for a name.

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  6 місяців тому +2

      Respectfully disagree. I know it seems this way from my videos. My hilux and all new 4wd’s come with the same rust. I have no issues with the comfort, sound or anything else on the vehicle. The build quality is still miles better than similarly priced vehicles

    I use a Donaldson type bowl filter when in extreme dusty conditions like the Tanimi or the main Cape Roads.Interchangeable with the ram head.Cheers.

    Cosmetic changes, you can waterproof the raised air intake but I suppose it doesn’t look the goods. New TJM snorkel looks good. You will wish you had that cyclone head when outback though. Those dust socks are worth you doing some research on, not the greatest bit of kit.

    That oem cyclone head does a good job in dust,, will it fit back on the TJM? The water doesn't come from the cyclone head but from the join at the bend and also wind forcing water in where the inlet meets the cutout in the body.

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  6 місяців тому

      Makes sense. It just goes to show just how poorly these intakes work. Thanks for the insights! 👍

    1 thing is that the build up of water may drain but you have had a lot of rain in north queensland throughout the last 2 months

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  6 місяців тому

      That low part sits under the point of drainage so I’m skeptical of the drainage but turning corners may do it. It was a shock for though!

    Bought one for my 2015 when it was new been good snorkel fitting wasn’t the best but it fitted no cutting and plenty of air gets in , I’m curious to know if the Donaldson cyclonic snorkel head will fit on this , the top spin model I think it’s called which will obviously help aid in reducing dust dirt ingress into air filter but not be like a oil sock over etc like some others which is a pain
