  • The Browning BL-22 is a great rifle but reassembly can be a big pain in the butt. I'll show you how to put this gun back together without pulling your hair out.

Great video, I've had my Browning for 42 years and never had the guts to take it apart. With your video I removed a whole lot of crud from inside the gun. Now it works like brand new. Never would have made it if you hadn't explained the ejector so well.
    Thank you!

This was my first .22lr and man how I absolutely fell in love with it's beautiful simple lines! When I was about 13 my mom took me to Dicks Sporting Goods and bought me this beautiful leaver action .22 for my main Christmas present which was about $320 if I remember correctly around the year 1995 and it was my first .22 ever and had so many wonderful memories tied to this gun....Not many moms would spend that much on a gun for their 13-year old but my mom was just a wonderful person and the best mother a son could have that would do anything to see me happy and for that I will be ever grateful and cherish the time I had with her

Another tip for reassemble. Put a 3/8” rare earth magnet on the receiver to hold the ejection spring and use your pencil eraser to hold the ejector in place when you slide the bolt back in. Works slick.
    Thanks for your great video.

My first rifle was a Glenfield Model 60 I received in the early 1970s. I also shot so many rounds thru mine that I wore it out too. I would buy a brick (500 rounds) of Wildcat ammo for $5.00 and shoot every round myself. I really did learn the basics of shooting with that little gun. Thanks for the memories.

Great video. Nice to see some real frustration... One thing I did a little different that helped is to wait on the ejector spring until the action was mostly reinserted and the ejector was riding in the bolt. I then dropped the spring in, aligned it into the recess and then used a small punch to compress it under the ejector. That way the ejector couldn’t wiggle around. I just had a hard time getting my fat fingers into the ejection port to hold the spring down. Thanks for making this video.

I don't have one so arrogant of me to comment, but for my Marlin model 60, I use a very small screwdriver that I made into a small fork so it doesn't slip off anything. Would something like that help hold the ejector against the spring until the stock assembly goes back?

    Hi there from France
I thank you for your video.
I took apart my bl 22 from 1976 for the first time to day. I bought it new in CA when I was 15 and kept it since.
It was not working smoothly as supposed to so I decided to clean the internals.
When it was apart, I found a second ejector spring bent in the bottom of the receiver…
Probably a left spring from a worker at the Miroku factory.
So now I have a spare spring in case, once I straitened out.
    Non it’s working fine.
Your videos are nice, no tactical non-sens and very helpful
You’re right putting the damn thing together in a pain in the a…
    Cheers
    Fred

Took my 60 year old BL-22 to the range today. Took it apart when I was 13 years old (it was my first gun, and my mother's first gun when she was 13) and put it back together myself...in 1988. I recall what a PITA it was to reassemble. Really appreciate your video. It's going to keep me from taking an hour to reassemble it (like it did in 1988!)

Pulled it apart and damm bits flew everywhere. 2 hours later I had it all cleaned, put back together and cycling well. Great video, thank you. After 35 years it was time to clean my BL-22. When reassembling, I found it easier to hold down the ejector spring with an erasure pencil (instead of a finger) and have the action closed when slinging it back into the receiver. I also immobilized the receiver with sand bags rather than try to hold it as well.

If the ejector spring is still stuck in place when you pull it apart, pay attention to the direction the spring is canting in its recess. Mine went back together easier with the spring canting towards the rear of the receiver. Another item that may help is to dab a tiny bit of grease into the ejector spring recess to keep the spring from falling out on you. Folks, If you find yourself forcing a fit, something is either still dirty, or not in alignment.

I thought I would never find one but they have one on Midway (This is an original factory replacement part. Factory replacement parts are manufactured to the exact same specifications and tolerances and use the same manufacturing materials as the original parts)

I congratulate you for this video disassembly/reassembly of the rifle Browning BL-22. I'm allowed to put a link to your video on my French website "essai-armes", explaining that it was very well done, the comments were American but the images speak for themselves. I hope you do not see any objection.
    Best regards. Michel.

Very well done instructive video. I did smile when you cut the video and (no doubt) expletives were deleted. Good thing the gun doesn't need to be taken down for routine cleaning after every shooting session.
That is a complicated design requiring about three hands to re-assemble.

Putting them back together is the easiest thing to do. You go about it all wrong and don't line it up properly before sliding the reciever together. Put a dab of grease on the bottom of the ejector spring to hold it in place. Tip the gun upside down and put ejector on its pin. The next step is key to making it easy. While the gun is upside down and on half cock, slide the lower reciever with the bolt installed on top of it, together so you are sliding the top of the bolt against the top of the inside of the reciever and slide it straight in. You don't have to hold the ejector as the cut on the bolt will automatically line up on the ejector and viola. You will get it right the first time every time I guarantee.

Thank you for making this video and standing up to the sadists who designed the BL-22. It too my about 2 hours to put it back together. That spring kept falling out and that ejector piece -- aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhh. This is a fun rifle to shoot but it will be a while before I take it apart again!

I just got my new BL22 and I love it. You were absolutely right about this fine rifle. It is very well made and the fit and finish is superb. Even though it is brand new the action is very smooth. I would have to say it is smoother and more precise than the Henry I used to own. Once again I want to thank you for putting out your excellent video tutorial on how to disassemble and reassemble this excellent lever action .22. Take care sir.

Hello Michael. I understand your concern about taking this rifle apart to clean it but I do have good news. Because it is a lever action and not a semiauto the inside of the receiver doesn't gum up like a semiauto will. Usually I will just run a bronze brush down the bore to clean the wax out of the chamber area. You should be able to fire hundreds of rounds, perhaps even a thousand rounds, before having to clean the rifle. My BL22 is one of my absolute favorite rifles and I'll never sell mine, even though it can be a pain to clean.

  • @mixup98

for the bolt (or slide) I use a very small amount of Tetra gun grease and I use a very light gun oil for the lever and hammer pivot pins.

Great video that was extremely helpful. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I bought mine in 1978 and it had never been disassembled. I don't shoot it all that often, but it was very dirty. I did get very lucky with reassembly, I locked the ejector into a pair of sutures and got it in on the first try!

I pulled one of these apart in the mid 80s peice of cake once you work it out. The realisation of course is Browning's designs just work aren't really that complex and exceptionally well made.

Thanks to mixup98 for making this video. It was a big help in re-assembling my BL22, but I'd like to add a couple of things. When I took mine apart, the bolt cover plate stayed in place, and the locking block (the square piece with the hole in it) slid out from behind it. I was able to re-assemble that part easily without disturbing the cover plate. I just put the locking block back on its pin and slid it back in the slot behind the cover plate. That saved me a step. I was dreading the last step where you have to put the two main parts together without knocking the ejector out of place, but I managed to do it easily first time. When the rifle is assembled, the ejector sits in a long slot in the bolt. When you bring the front and rear assemblies together, make sure you are pinching the bolt onto the frame like in the video at the 10 minute mark. Keep the barrel / receiver assembly with the bottom facing up, just like it is in the video at that time. Now, instead of looking from the camera point of view, look in from the front, where his middle finger is. You can see the ejector and also the slot in the bolt. Carefully bring the rear assembly straight in with the top of the bolt (which is facing down) sliding along the roof of the reciever (which is facing up). Slide the parts together until the bolt is almost touching the rear of the ejector. Now, you may have to guide the ejector into its slot with a small screwdriver or similar tool. Once the rear of the ejector is in the slot, you can slide the two assemblies together, keeping the bolt in contact with the receiver. Hope this helps somebody.

How about a little dab of vaseline on the extractor spring to keep it from falling out of the recess? Then you can focus on keeping tension on the extractor over the extractor spring with your finger, then clean up the excess vaseline with a Qtip with solvent through the ejection port after reassembly, don't want any dirt or powder residue sticking to it, just a thought

  • @roliver7773
