Even if he couldn't land it, he's still a legend with 19th world record, 2 championships, 2 gold Olympics medals. He was the one who raised the audience of men's figure skating for these ten years and levelled up the competition up to this point. His worth won't be deducted from not being able to do that one move. . This wasn't a joke. He is old enough to know what he said was wrong. He needs to train harder and work on his artistic component. Confidence is good but it need to be coupled with a well rounded performance to win. Don't mitigate his poor attitude and poor sportsmanship with excuses. If he is too immature at this time to make fair and polite comments he should say nothing.
Sorry but this is not the first time the judges punish the non-gays with way too low artistic scores - and this is NOT a gay only sport! Your sexual orientation should NOT affect your scores in any way!!!
Has Ilia compared himself to Plushenko, Yagudin or Patrick Chan? Each of them has much more artistry than Ilia. Yagudin's foot work/step sequence/choreography in his 2002 Olympic games are truly amazing. None of them are gay. Don't attack Yuzuru nor Jason Brown. Sex orientation is not a good excuse for not having artistry. Yuzuru loves music - he wares headsets and listens to the music from time to time. He has good taste/sense about music. He also learns all sort of dances. He tries to incorporate different types of music and dances into his program, thinks about how to perform them and did some choreography for his programs. Does Ilia has these hobbies? I don't think he has such interest/or talents. He only shows interests in jumps. So, sex orientation is not an excuse.
I saw this video a month or two month ago. Yuzuru was on zoom meeting with David Wilson (his ex-choreographer) while David said "melt..." remotely. David was practicing with Yuzuru and showing him how to express the feeling of "melting in something". I saw other videos where Yuzuru practicing with Jeffrey Buttle and Shae-Lynn Bourne on the ice. When Yuzuru was in TCC, he took some dancing classes. May be this is cultural difference, in the US, young skater may just go to "jumping camp", "how to perform" is not part of their regular training. Again, this is not related to sex orientation at all. It's related to one's talent/interest and the training they want to engage.

From his self proclaiming "Quad god" I just had a feeling he'll grow arrogant, so this is not surprising. He should follow some other Western skaters like Jason Brown whom are so respectful towards Yuzu and is recognizing Yuzu as the pioneer of this sport from the past decade. Thank god, I'm no longer watching FS competitions as it is obvious that ISU will do their best in putting this.child in the pedestal through changing Rules & giving him extra bonus points. Ilia just showed his true colors, he wanted to ride on Yuzu’s coattail since day1 and called him his “idol” and then says this stuff. He used him only for fame and nothing else. I don’t know others but as a fanyu I’m pissed big time. Also Brown receives high components because HE CARES about the artistry of skating and not just jumping around. Ilia saying that gay skaters receive higher scores, when in reality it’s the opposite and face continuous hate and discrimination, is another proof that he doesn’t even know his own sport.

What's glaringly obvious about this young man, is that he lacks the skating skills, the grace, and the refinement that both Jason Brown and Yuzuru Hanyu possess intrinsically. And he has an arrogance about him, that he has not earned. Not by a long shot. Giving himself the name of "quad god" and making inappropriate comments about other skaters, implying that they get high marks because of their orientation, or because he perceives their costumes as feminine, was just beyond the pale. When the truth is that he may be able to execute a lot of quads, including the elusive quad axle, he often looks awkward doing them. What's more, the costumes he wears accentuate how long his legs are in comparison to his torso, and only makes him look more awkward. Yes, he's young. But that doesn't excuse his behavior, or negate the need to get help choosing costumes that flatter his body type. And certainly doesn't excuse his poor actual skating skills - which is where component scores come from. Mostly, he needs to eat a great big double helping of humble pie. And master the art of keeping his inappropriate thoughts about others, and his inflated opinion of himself, to himself. Like Jason, Hanyu, and other skaters do.
No one cares ilia unless he tries to put his emptiness and useless ideas with his silly sentences. Even if he jumps to the space he has to have personality and expressive skating skills to be taken care valued. Teenage is not excuse for being empty and not trying to improve both for personality and skating skills. We've had watched/are watching 18 yo even younger talented athletes all around the world in all branches. This is the first time i see this much emptiness and horrifying speeches. He's not that great. He jumps, just like Chen, so what? There is so much more to figure skating than just jumps. Neither of them ever impressed me. I think at the last Olympics that Yuma and Shoma skated so much better than Nathan.

Ilia's comment was stupid and juvenile, he should know better as he participates in the same sport as Jason Brown. If he is afraid of homosexuals, then maybe he should switch to hockey. Nathan Chen got roasted badly a few years ago for a similar comment, I would have thought Ilia would have learnt to keep his mouth shut. In fact, Yusu’s personality is a very typical mild manner skinny Japanese boys actually. If you visit a high school in Japan they are pretty much like that. Plus he’s an artist on top of that. He manages to keep his innocence even in his 20s I believe due to a lot of his time & focus were on training & improving his skills instead of hanging with bad influences. Asian boys who grew up in Asia are culturally different to Asian boys grew up in the West. They are a lot softer manners by nature & peers influenced.

Yuzuru and jason treated llia very well, but all llia does is just snub and hurt with no hard feelings, is very arrogant and her skating is nothing expressive compared to these two. Caring about Jason's sexuality must be because llia is gay inside, the same way that saying yuzuru is jealous of your quad axel must be because you're the one who's jealous. Well I believe that figure skating is about expressing. Let the skaters express themselves as they like. We humans should stop judging everyone according to our own perspectives. This is outdated. Malinin is the world champion now and has proven himself ready for "such pressure." Gay people are not all effeminate and it a disservice to those who act and look masculine to expect them to kowtow to the flamboyant ones. Trying to force people to march in lock step with them is outrageous. Jason is lucky to have Malinin to be his friend regardless of Malinin's orientation. Malinin is able to be expressive with his masculine gestures and he does not have a Mexican passport. Nathan Chen is right to avoid the femininity which does not enhance the MEN's Figure Skating image.
Give it a break with regard the the 4Axel. Regardless of what you think about Ilia now, he landed a true 4A in competition and is in the record book. Yuzuru never has and never will. Fact.

Instead of trying to bring Jason’s components score down, a more mature, knowledgeable person would practice skating skills and artistry to become unreachable. Skating has to be more than a jump show. He must be insecure to have to bring up someone else’s orientation to prove a point about skating, which proves Jason marks are deserved based on skating skills.
It is incredible to see an US guy saying discrimination about LGBT. The only reason maybe that he ia sending message to Asian americans or Japanese or Chinese that are still feel hard to fully accept LGBT, trying to raise his popularity in those people. Honestly yes, Ilia was very wrong to say what he did and it was stupid.. As he gets older, more mature, hopefully he will know better and become more tolerant. Having said that, he still is an 18 year old kid barely out of high school. Yes, on one hand he is considered an adult, but anyone who has been around 18 year old kids or have ever been one one's self, knows that teenage boys can say stupid and cruel things, so can girls for that matter. I am a grandmother in my seventies, and remember a couple of things I said at that age that still make me cringe with shame. I honestly think it will be the same with Ilia, but he is a phenom, which is hard enough to deal with, mix in the cockiness of a teenage boy with his own You-Tube following and you get disaster sometimes.. Simply because they don't think before they speak, arrogant teenagers can be cruel.. Time will tell if he ever will come close to Yuzu or Jason in grace and skating skills.. Hopefully he will learn to be as graceful as they are off the ice.

This wasn't a joke. He is old enough to know what he said was wrong. He needs to train harder and work on his artistic component. Confidence is good but it need to be coupled with a well rounded performance to win. Don't mitigate his poor attitude and poor sportsmanship with excuses. Has Ilia compared himself to Plushenko, Yagudin or Patrick Chan? Each of them has much more artistry than Ilia. Yagudin's foot work/step sequence/choreography in his 2002 Olympic games are truly amazing. None of them are gay. Don't attack Yuzuru nor Jason Brown. Sex orientation is not a good excuse for not having artistry. Yuzuru loves music - he wares headsets and listens to the music from time to time. He has good taste/sense about music. He also learns all sort of dances. He tries to incorporate different types of music and dances into his program, thinks about how to perform them and did some choreography for his programs. Does Ilia has these hobbies? I don't think he has such interest/or talents. He only shows interests in jumps. So, sex orientation is not an excuse.
I saw this video a month or two month ago. Yuzuru was on zoom meeting with David Wilson (his ex-choreographer) while David said "melt..." remotely. David was practicing with Yuzuru and showing him how to express the feeling of "melting in something". I saw other videos where Yuzuru practicing with Jeffrey Buttle and Shae-Lynn Bourne on the ice. When Yuzuru was in TCC, he took some dancing classes. May be this is cultural difference, in the US, young skater may just go to "jumping camp", "how to perform" is not part of their regular training. Again, this is not related to sex orientation at all. It's related to one's talent/interest and the training they want to engage.

Only when some other skaters are compared to Yuruzu in terms of their artistry talents/performance ability, this (sex orientation) is brought up. Yuzuru is the most complete figure skater, he has all the skating abilities. That's all.

I thought of all the things I had to say about this; and it was quite a lot. Now I realize that it all comes down to one simple thought; one sentence…and it is this. This young man has some serious growing up to do. Period.
Teenage talk is no excuse for being nasty. Yuzuru Hanyu has been skating since he was 4, and was a teenager when he become an Olympic champion. Sportsmanship is a term that covers integrity: " Doing the right thing even when no one is watching." This one apologized just because he got caught. He's got a very long way to go before he can even dream of measuring his little-self with Yuzuru Hanyu.

Ilia just showed his true colors, he wanted to ride on Yuzu’s coattail since day1 and called him his “idol” and then says this stuff. He used him only for fame and nothing else. I don’t know others but as a fanyu I’m pissed big time.
Also Brown receives high components because HE CARES about the artistry of skating and not just jumping around. Ilia saying that gay skaters receive higher scores, when in reality it’s the opposite and face continuous hate and discrimination, is another proof that he doesn’t even know his own sport.

What's glaringly obvious about this young man, is that he lacks the skating skills, the grace, and the refinement that both Jason Brown and Yuzuru Hanyu possess intrinsically. And he has an arrogance about him, that he has not earned. Not by a long shot. Giving himself the name of "quad god" and making inappropriate comments about other skaters, implying that they get high marks because of their orientation, or because he perceives their costumes as feminine, was just beyond the pale. When the truth is that he may be able to execute a lot of quads, including the elusive quad axle, he often looks awkward doing them. What's more, the costumes he wears accentuate how long his legs are in comparison to his torso, and only makes him look more awkward.
Yes, he's young. But that doesn't excuse his behavior, or negate the need to get help choosing costumes that flatter his body type. And certainly doesn't excuse his poor actual skating skills - which is where component scores come from. Mostly, he needs to eat a great big double helping of humble pie. And master the art of keeping his inappropriate thoughts about others, and his inflated opinion of himself, to himself. Like Jason, Hanyu, and other skaters do.
No one cares ilia unless he tries to put his emptiness and useless ideas with his silly sentences. Even if he jumps to the space he has to have personality and expressive skating skills to be taken care valued.
Teenage is not excuse for being empty and not trying to improve both for personality and skating skills.
We've had watched/are watching 18 yo even younger talented athletes all around the world in all branches. This is the first time i see this much emptiness and horrifying speeches.

Ilia's comment was stupid and juvenile, he should know better as he participates in the same sport as Jason Brown. If he is afraid of homosexuals, then maybe he should switch to hockey. Nathan Chen got roasted badly a few years ago for a similar comment, I would have thought Ilia would have learnt to keep his mouth shut. Hopefully this debacle might teach him to think before speaking and being young is no excuse for such a comment.

In fact, Yusu’s personality is a very typical mild manner skinny Japanese boys actually. If you visit a high school in Japan they are pretty much like that. Plus he’s an artist on top of that.
He manages to keep his innocence even in his 20s I believe due to a lot of his time & focus were on training & improving his skills instead of hanging with bad influences.
Asian boys who grew up in Asia are culturally different to Asian boys grew up in the West. They are a lot softer manners by nature & peers influenced.

Yuzuru and jason treated llia very well, but all llia does is just snub and hurt with no hard feelings, is very arrogant and her skating is nothing expressive compared to these two. Caring about Jason's sexuality must be because llia is gay inside, the same way that saying yuzuru is jealous of your quad axel must be because you're the one who's jealous. Learn while there is still time. Plně souhlasím s názorem jednoho z komentujících, že kdyby se odebraly arogantnímu mladíčkovi Malininovi jeho skoky, tak nemá absolutně co nabídnout. Před králem krasobruslení Yuzuru Hanyu by mĕl našlapovat v uctivé vzdálenosti a po špičkách !!! Jediné co Malinin má, je jeho drzé čelo, trošička talentu a tuctová tvář bez špetky charismatu . Skating has to be more than a jump show. He must be insecure to have to bring up someone else’s orientation to prove a point about skating, which proves Jason marks are deserved based on skating skills.

Honestly yes, Ilia was very wrong to say what he did and it was stupid.. As he gets older, more mature, hopefully he will know better and become more tolerant. Having said that, he still is an 18 year old kid barely out of high school. Yes, on one hand he is considered an adult, but anyone who has been around 18 year old kids or have ever been one one's self, knows that teenage boys can say stupid and cruel things, so can girls for that matter. I am a grandmother in my seventies, and remember a couple of things I said at that age that still make me cringe with shame. I honestly think it will be the same with Ilia, but he is a phenom, which is hard enough to deal with, mix in the cockiness of a teenage boy with his own You-Tube following and you get disaster sometimes.. Simply because they don't think before they speak, arrogant teenagers can be cruel.. Time will tell if he ever will come close to Yuzu or Jason in grace and skating skills.. Hopefully he will learn to be as graceful as they are off the ice.
