Even though most arcade games in 1980 didn’t have an actual ending where you can potentially win the game, the developers still hit it home to the players that you CANNOT win Missile Command. This is WWIII, a scenario where nobody wins and everyone loses. The only thing you’re really accomplishing in the game is delaying the inevitable for as long as possible. No matter how good you are, you’ll eventually make a mistake, incoming missiles get past your defenses, and BOOM, there goes your cities and your supply of missiles. Missile Command was one of many cautionary tales during the Cold War that helped scare humanity away from doing this sort of thing for real.
I'm just hear to say that Dave Theurer (programmer) is arguably the best esp. when i found that he didnt have time to work with a team at Atari back then yet remained a perfectionist about this game; spent 96 HOURS straight courtesy of interview via 8 bit apocalypse-untold story of Missile command book. Only he knew of making a game though simplistic visually yet rocks audio wise and play mechanically to whereby unlike most '80s games; it's never the same game twice so there's no pattern/ memorizing what each wave will be like. No wonder he finally got an award for the 2012 Pioneer of a game selection candidacy. I only wish the game had allowed itself to save leftover missiles like you did for cities. To me, Missile Command is THE most underrated classic in the history of classic arcade games.
I enjoyed watching that, used to play as a teen, got over a million once back then, just recently purchased a machine and 475,000 is a high as I've reached so far, like you I can't save all six cities after the 150 to 200,000 mark. My strategy is save bases and make sure I get 10,000 for the next BONUS CITY, frustrating, 2 bad screens in a row, your done
k, the spread ur are trying isn't quite what it needs: opposite screen side with far away base, before the action happens, they explode when stuff happens. been to 8ook many times, owned the game. three from each far base first from opposite ends. trak ball skill is great
when i was 11 i did a few times. my high score is 5 million something. that was kind of my goal to get the cities, but i kind of just stopped playing. lol
I never got this good. I had this game as a kid. Thanks for the nostalgia. Did you ever make it to 800k? The games were more basic back then, but still so hard.
i haven't been playing that much. had another 500k game, still not to 800k yet. you get 100 or something like that bonus cities at 810k i think. so you're high score is usually under 800k, or millions. lol
Thanks for this blast from the past...watching you play makes me appreciate even more how impossibly good this guy named Mike Lee used to be back in the day at UC Berkeley. Due to all the people who had gotten good at the game, the extra city bonus had been jacked up to 18,000 per extra, and he still made it to 999,990 all the time. He had "the ☁️" down to four missiles, (sometimes even three), always from the two side bases, never the middle. On good days he would carry six cities the entire way, usually saving four to six. Being a graduate student, he obviously didn't have the time to play marathon games, so he would always get 999,990. I couldn't figure out how he could possibly know exactly when to start dying so he wouldn't go over 999,990, He told me he kept track of how many cities he had in storage in his head the whole time so he would know exactly when to start dying...one time I was watching him he stopped in the 800,000s, the screen kept refilling to six cities for over ten times at least, it was such a disgustingly awesome performance I never forgot it. (This was a game where he had as many as eight missiles left in the center base upon completion of waves at the highest difficulty (past 500,000).
@@coasterlvr Thanks for the reply. Found out already but have yet to add it (though I would assume it works just as smooth; not exactly a demanding game). I've never played the arcade version but did play some console version and it's a fun game. 👍
so good. i have tony's book, missile commander. i wish i had video of when i was a little kid playing. i'd like to see my style. but i could never pick off missiles one by one like the best do.

Such a big part of my life in 1981. Thanks for reminding me!
Remember what Joshua from WarGames once said? "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play." That's literally this game in a nutshell.
Exactly. I like to think that it helped in some small way to steer us away from a nuclear confrontation.

@@davemoore9309 Try to reach 809,995, the target.
Same here when I was a teenager, my highest over a million back then, good to watch this. Many memories.
Badass playthrough bro!
I’m a sucker for classic arcade games like this, how’d you guys pull it off back then? You’re all monsters at this lol
I’m stuck at 35k, I notice you can pick the smart bombs off easily, guess I need to git gud!
Did the arcade cabinets have that baseline? It's awesome!

Could you manage 809,995 points? If you had scored over it, ya would've been given 176 extra cities to defend. I did just that.

What version of Missle Command is this?
Did you find out?
Playing Atari with a mouse?
no, 4” trackball and cone buttons controller i made
What port is this? What console? It looks VERY smooth and I would like to add it to my emulation handheld.
this is MAME arcade version. played on a PC.

Here's the world champion playing. On these settings, there's NO bonus cities either. Truly incredible 😎
