I am in the same boat. I have a 4.5 PH as well. I just got my soil tet back. Time to go to work. Thanks for the informative video. Good luck this season. Maine North Woods Hunter (Shane)
Perfect timing. Just got my soil tests back 2 weeks ago and my soil was 4.6. Was old growth timber lots. Buckwheat was the only thing that would grow! Peas, soybeans completely failed
Doesn’t take much for buck wheat to grow. Obviously the better the soil the better the crop but as long as you have something green and growing it’s working on the soil. 👍
Thanks for the great information. I recently purchased a property thats mostly oak bottoms. I found wheat and oats grow really with my low p.h soil. I've started doing some timber stand improvement by falling and stacking privit, all magnolias and trees that block alot of sun during the winter months. My question -what should I plant for forage now that I have sunlight reaching the forest floor? My plan is to burn next year to illiminate all the large tress and brush I recently cut down. I'm thinking the buck wheat, sunflowers and milo will die during the winter and make great fuel for the burn.
I have a question, I put some buckwheat in it’s about 6 weeks. I want to put a fall plot in , but I have weeds mixed in should I cut it or crush it before I plant. Some of the growth is 2 to 3 feet tall.
Which fertilizer do you recommend? I’m doing the exact same thing. Just cleared out a acre in the woods. I’ll be planting winter peas and cereal rye. Wasn’t sure if putting the fertilizer or lime down would hurt the seed?
So you don’t kill the buckwheat with glyphosate? You just disc it back into the ground and then plant on top of it? I used buckwheat to be a cover crop and planted late planted beans, oats and peas right into the buckwheat and the took the cultipacker over it and then sprayed it with glyphosate this year. But in the future I don’t think I’d like to use glyphosate anymore. Any thoughts on how I could keep using buckwheat to help with my soil and prevent weeds and be used as a cover crop still?
That would be a no till method and this channel will never be about that. I get this question non stop. Yes I just work it back into the soil. 1. That create green manure 2. It reduces the use of Chemicals 3. It works the lime the fertilizer into the soil allowing it to be utilized at the plants root level. 4. Why plant something just to kill it and dry it out of all its moisture? The only way you could do the method you want without chemicals is to get a crimper. Spread your seeds into it then crimp it then there would be no need for glyphosate
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors appreciate your response. Thanks for clarifying that you don’t do no till. I really like your work. This is helpful in trying to make sure I fully understand the best way to approach my land. Thank you.
I put my tiller down and just rolled over buckwheat this year without pto engaged. If looking no till and you have equipment. Chose not to spray as well. Smaller buckwheat may go to seed but figure turkey may focus on them or a little in plot won't hurt. Love your info. Dave!
Question , I have a old logging road that I can disk or drag but hard packed Not open ( wide as small truck side rubbing ) I've blew it off this summer and was going to try winter rye this fall Sept and then leave it . Will I be wasting my time and money ? Not trying for a plot as much as cover for road ?
One of the best things I’ve bought. It’s heavy man a pain to get around but it sure does work. Bought it at tractor supply a few months back. I’ve used them in the past but I said screw it and finally Got my own.
How much line would you be adding to your soil to get it up to a pH of six and how often would you be replenishing the fertilizer and Lime? If using pelletized lime should you immediately Diskit in to the soil or is it OK to leave it And let mother nature distribute it throughout the season where is the best way to add the amendments to the soil????
If you can work it in the soil that would be best. There’s not way of knowing how much lime to add without doing a soil test. You can’t just guess. Do a soil test and it will tell you what to do
I have access to powder hydrated lime. I've never tried to put it out in this form. Do you have any suggestions for using this type of free lime. I have a Wooden area that has restricted sunlight. I'm cutting saplings and trees a little over time.
I don’t really use powdered lime. I use pelletized lime because it’s easy to spread with a regular spin cast spreader. You could dump some in a wagon of such and use a shovel to spread or I suppose you could sling it by hand.
What is the easiest quickest method to get a fall plot started? No till or spray and disk? It’s an old overgrown feild. I bush hogged it last week. My plan is to go all no till once it’s established well. Also what fall blend would you recommend?
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors what is the best way to get a new plot started? It was an overgrown field I recently bush hogged. Should I spray and disk and spray and no till?
@@kfranklin308 with wheat if there’s enough thatch still standing and enough bare soil exposed you can just spread winter wheat heavy and then spray to kill Grasses. Or you can spray then disc and plant.

Gotcha. 1. Calcium chloride doesn’t change PH. 2. Nothing replaces actual lime 3: I added lime. 4. Everything grew 5. Liquid lime is a bandaid 🩹 6. Why would anyone use that and purposely spread arsenic on the soil or plants. 7. Don’t believe the marketing hype. Follow the proper steps as outlined in this video and you’ll have a much better result long term. 👌👍
The most hilarious part is I just asked that question at first because I thought you where sponsored by deergro but it was the other ridiculous company antler grow both of which are probably the biggest scam in the food plot outdoor industry and that's saying something. Make a video showing tissues sample lab results for the plants before and after this antler grow crap and make all these nay sayers eat there words.

They have been posted multiple times before Ans after. If you are a naysayer I don’t personally care if you use it or not. Benefits me none.
I tried this last year on a brand new plot in June. No disking, no lime, no fertilizer, just killed weeds and spread buckwheat and then had basically no rain for a couple months... Don't be like me. It did not work out 😂
Yeah I have that problem to . Water is necessary for everything that grows and when you don’t have a water source Getting the food plot to grow is a challenge!!
Buckwheat is a very thirsty plant. I planted it on a weedy area that I disced & then planted middle of May 2019. Did the same thing 2020 with less weeds. Due to drought last year I didn't plant but I had very little weeds. Got rain hours after I tilled end of 1st week of August. I put down rape, brassica, kale & turnips I got from a co-op. I had some 2 lb turnips in October & kale up to my waste with huge leaves. That buckwheat is the only thing I did different to that area. In May I put in a cover crop of wheat & the weeds have been sparse. Had to do just a little light tilling which was tough with bad tires on my rear-tine tiller. R weather is 🔥 & dry in central MN but I've been prepping for 3 to 4 different areas. I want tonnage this year so I'm seeding a blend of clovers in some dry pasture type soil 2day. I get my new tiller tires tomorrow when it's supposed to rain. R forecast is changing so it looks like I'll be able to plant my Domain Big Sexy in 3 other areas I prepped. I don't seed until the conditions r right. Those clovers r different. Just filling in dead spots that already has great soil contact properties👍.
Great information! Will be turning under the buckwheat and planting the Green Machine in about a week. Getting anxious. And no glyphosate. 👍
Getting close for sure. 👍
Exactly, plant it and prepare the soil! Sadly I'm 20hrs away from my property and just can't get to it all that often to get things done.
Yes sometimes that is tough for sure

After putting the lime down how long do you want to put the seed down. And that area looks good you done.
