This was his 'Thin White Duke' phase. Funky, arty, soulful. Bowie could do it all ❤

David Bowie is an artist who has always tried different sounds and looks over the years. This song has a very catchy quality.

Played a big part in the 2nd British invasion - Bowie was a phenomenal artist and such a diverse musician, so many great songs and albums to choose from including this one..The guy was Way ahead of his time IMO 🔥🔥

For Bowie soul and funk: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with Luther Vandross back-up singers to die for and David Sanborn on killer alto saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. [Luther and David both on Dick Cavett talk-show video.clip..and Bowie did Fame and Golden Years singles on Soul Train clip] ...Also guitarist Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). … Sample his Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (and it’s all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure.…Tonight with Tina Turner (also with him in one of her concert videos)... Knock on Wood (David Live, 1975). “1984” (from Diamond Dogs album. Sounds like “Shaft.” Recorded by Bowie, later by Tina Turner) A friend of the Black community - complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning broadcasts. Married to Somali super-model Iman.

The confluence of serious R&B and Rock in the 70s -- David was one of the artists who did it well, took it to a new level, and invented a new sound from it. It is a short list of bands that accomplished that. Baby Empress is taking it all in -- she is beautiful.

Oh my gosh, your baby is so beautiful. My little girls are 14 and 18 now, but I remember those days. We used to listen to music together all the time. Such a special time for you.

Bowie was a chameleon. After "Ziggy Stardust", and " Thin White Duke" came his "Plastic Soul" funk era.
    A genius. Check out "Fame"!

Sweet! "Golden Years" was the lead single from Bowie's 1976 album, Station to Station. I remember hearing it on the radio a lot when I was a kid. "Run for the shadows, run for the shadows \ Run for the shadows in these golden years -- whop, whop, whop!" Bowie famously performed this on Soul Train. When you're ready for more mid seventies funky disco Bowie, check out "Fame", "Young Americans", "Sound and Vision", and "1984" -- studio recordings preferably as his live performances during that time suffered a touch from his drug abuse.

***BOWIE GETS SOME SOUL TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...ah, those GOLDEN times....(0:34).....
    - ...David (like many European acts) LOVED Black / R&B Music, and in 1975, there was PLENTY of good stuff for David to be influenced by! ...David's 1975 Album, "Young Americans" had a Soul influence to it, and gave David a #1 hit ("Fame")....
    - ...naturally, he wanted to stay within the genre; his 1976 Album "Station To Station" featured this track also showing Bowie getting influenced by by more Electronic sounds.....
    - ....the tune was well received...SO, much so, he was invited to perform it on "Soul Train" making him the 4th White Male to appear on the Show (behind Mike Oldfield, Gino Vannelli, & Elton John)....uh -OH.......................................
    - ...David appeared very.........ummm... 'Coco-Cola'-d' UP, and the Song was SO new, he couldn't mime the words! ...and there was an Ebony Man SO visibly upset that a 'honky' was performing, he REFUSED to dance, and stood STILL, staring at David! (2:21)
    - ...David was SO embarrassed afterwards, but the tune hit #10 Pop, Spring 1976...but he NEVER appeared on "Soul Train" again......

@@EmpressReacts ...Mike is the composer / Instrumentalist for the CLASSIC theme to the 1974 flick "The Exorcist" ("Tubular Bells"); He (& Gino) appeared in 1974, but Elton & David (who appeared in 1975), are ALWAYS referred to FIRST.....

I love Bowie's funky songs probably the best of all his stuff. "Fame" is probably my favorite.

I bought this CD because "This Is Not America" is on it.
Pat Matheny with David Bowie is a spectacular combination, Empress.

In the days of when you had to buy the Single for progress in The Charts you would think David Bowie Singles would be easy on the second hand front but no! They are almost impossible to find.
