Actually it was top notch back then. Before this generation of games, 256 colors was only fast enough at 320x200 resolution. This game was 640x480, which was only used with 16 colors for games so far.

@@madoc1 , I`ve played NFS 1 several times after Underground 1 and 2. It has very little connection to those two games, which are good as you can tune your car and making it look like a Christmas tree, but physics and "reality" factor were just in a different category - more like Mario Karts. NFS 1 was more like a semi-simulation, closer to Test Drive Unlimited 1 and Forza Horizon. NFS series went with NFS II into a less complex driving game, more appropriate for kids.

I'm 9 years old, sitting in my friends basement. We just got this for ps1, and he tells me, "you can sit in the driver's seat on this game, I just don't know how to move the camera". I can remember playing for what seemed like hours before we finally figured it out. I was mind blown that we had this, in our house, and not in an arcade. I think this is what got me into SIM racing/auto racing, maybe 50% this and 50% gran turismo 1.
Anyone noticed that game phisics in 95' were extremly good , than in 2000' pisics were like shit , than in 2005' phisics started getting better again ?
+Vlad Balaet That's because we ran our (NFS1) physics sim rate at 100 Hz and rendering at 30 Hz. Wei and his younger brother Daniel did a great job with the physics at the time. We also allowed cars to _fully_ flip over to land on their roof. Sadly GT 3 and Project Gotham didn't and this "artificially constrainted" physics wasn't as much fun IMHO. :-/
I love this game! It was such so much better than Test Drive 1 (1987) and Test Drive 2 (1989). The cars didn't all handle the same - they had their own characteristics. Felt very realistic. It featured circuit tracks but the open road City, Coastal, Alpine locations were the real star attractions. This game is from 1994 and 21 years later I could still put it on now and enjoy it. The only other game I can think of that's that old that has the same effect on me is Syndicate. Forza 4 is terrific, Assotto Corsa is VERY impressive despite the lack of content. Still early days... its only going to get better. Bang for buck, TNFS is an all time great and in my view better than the other NFS's that have followed on.

There's a great TNFS add on for Assetto Corsa. Some very clever people re created the original vehicle lineup. Definitely worth checking out. The one driving Sim that deserves a remake is 'Stunt Car Racer' (1989).

I miss this need for speed 1 and need for speed Porsche unleashed, too nostalgic for me, back in the day I will play it on pc for hours, I remember in NFS 1 if you get caught by cops there's a cutscene that cops will hand it ticket to you, in Porsche Unleashed you need to complete mission for parts, tracks and cars and of course my favorite car in Porsche Unleashed are Moby Dick version race car, for me this two NFS are my nostalgia memory's that can't be erased

Yeah, no 1st Person view kills it for me. The original still the best. It's still an all round better put together package than today's excellent Assetto Corsa Sim.

Hey Mate. If you have Assetto Corsa, you might be interested in the re created TNFS original lineup. Some very clever people added the Diablo, 512TR, ZR1, RT10, 993, NSX. Top level quality too... and free. Unfortunately those brilliant A-B routes haven't been done. I believe copyright issues were one problem. Also, one who did take a look at the routes said it wasn't feasible. The jumps are too extreme. Kind regards.

I grew up with MK and Sonic in the 90s and I don't think I had my 1st Playtation until 97, I never really had a NFS game until Most Wanted on the Gamecube. I did play this NFS with my older cousin and all the ones whenever I'd visit them because he had it before I got it and my best friend (at the time) had Underground 1 & 2. Seeing all these old school games brings me to nostalgia tears every time, I know it sounds bitch-mode but I can't help it.

Damn, this is still good to play even today. I know that all these latest games have come a long way are trying to do a lot of new things, along with some crappy plot stories (UG2 was the last very good story based game), but nothing matches the purity of just racing. The way these cars turn in the original game has lots of understeer and still requires you to pay attention to your speed and lines.
