The despair of "How can I have disbelieved the wrong egg thing?!" is going to haunt my dreams for years to come. Middlesbrough got to the fa cup final in 2002 and he did record a song with chris rea called let's dance for that final so 20 years fits the timeline of his story, its also true that his recording studio was on an island in the thames so the main gist of the story is true just not the absurd detail of him putting an egg in the bath, chris rea was a friend of bob's appearing on shooting stars and more recently on mortimer and whitehouse go fishing where he references the egg story bob told here
Bob is the most suitable and useful guest any panel show has ever seen. The fact that so many of Bob's true stories are absolutely ridiculous, means that whoever writes the lies can push the boat a little further for Bob than for any other guest - And Bob carries the lie so far with his form of storytelling, mixed with his bizarre collection of true stories. Fuji 9, The Hand Lion, Castle Douglas and the Gulf Stream, The Tawny Owl, The fireworks in the front room... The way he tells the stories and elaborates on details is so chaotic. He throws in bizarre details that just can't be real, but also can't have been made up on the spot. I nearly fell out of my chair when I first googled Fuji 9 and learned that a well-known comedian was telling the truth about doing his own fucking dentistry. The Bob/David dynamic is just the icing on the cake.
Something that makes this even better is that while Bob could have made up any and all of this, the bits about recording a football song in the 90s is something he actually did
Rob brydon says that Bob mortimer is the most popular guest on wilty. You can see why. He is so weird they don't know whether he is telling the truth or not.
Him and Claudia are the all time best, fantastic at misdirection and able to convincingly fumble over truths or be rock solid on lies but also mix it up so you can never really tell. Truly masters at improv and wit.
The show's writers pulled a cunning ruse - knowing that Bob had one implausible egg anecdote up his sleeve they concocted a fake one to lead with in order to double-bluff David Mitchell.
I'm pretty sure they bring in Bob to break David's brain, given he is always on Lee's team. And it is always brilliant how Bob knows how to utterly bewilder David.

Bob Mortimer is an amazingly funny story-teller. I remember Tommy Cooper could walk on stage and people began laughing. Bob Has a similar effect, as soon as he starts to speak he is funny, his mind must be racing ahead mapping his tale as he speaks. He is not simply masterfully running through an act of prepared anecdotes, like Billy Connolly or Jasper Carrot. But the other thing, when you consider how many of his seemingly outrageous tales ARE true, he is a fascinating character with some definite eccentricities . . eg his "pocket meat", and "fuji-7" home dentistry. I love his fishing series with Paul Whitehouse - one of the best things on terrestrial TV in recent years. On this program, I now that some of the reactions might be played up, but I do get the feeling that sometimes there is genuine fear and frustration in David Mitchell's eyes.

As an American who has met many people from all over the U.K. Not one has ever slipped any processed meats into my pockets. So disappointed. Explains alot though.
I love how watching all these Bob Mortimer videos in order results in so many “crossovers”. For example, Bob’s mention of soil science gets even funnier when you remember that in a previous episode he mentioned that he once “was in a field, Dion, collecting some mud to go and bury in me garden.”
It doesn't matter who else is on the show, if David, Lee and Rob are on form then it's a guaranteed laughthathon (although Claudia and Bob are always welcome bonuses).
David has realised, to his own detriment and possibly his sanity, that with all his logic and education, that the most insane, weird and bizarre stories that Bob tells, regardless of how impossible they could be,throws him into a void of questioning his own reality.
This is such a fabulous pick-me-up! The interaction between David and Bob is so great. And I love watching Lucy Porter, as she collapses into helpless laughter. Just brilliant.
