I felt so seen when you talked about the construction people. I'm a single as well with 2 cats. I bought a property in 2020 (2 acre, pool and 3000sq ft). It took me 20 months to renovate. I have been scammed twice (1 just flat out took my deposit and never did the work) and second guy overcharged. I finally learned and interviewed 8 different contractors and went with the one who was professional, provided a quote and stuck to it and timeline! I'm also a POC and I have experienced racism on top of the sexism (been called Honey, sweetie & where is your husband on the daily). What no one understands is how emotionally taxing this is. You are extremely lucky to have a family at least to help you with some aspects. I done this completely alone. Thankfully I did meet 2 honest people (one is the contractor and my handy man) whom I both consider good friends now. Just hang in there! It will be worth it one day when you realized every single thing in that house was your decision. Oh you may want to start thinking about switch lights and vent plates too! There are so many options and if you want a smart home..start to implement them as soon as possible with your electrician. It will be worth it! I made the mistake of waiting....and got a little burned at the end. Sending you lots of love!

I think the absolute hussle in the construction world is disgusting. I helped my dad with a Reno a few years ago and I'm still traumatized. The city inspectors, contraction managers, vendors is such a scam. Don't be afraid to demand contracts, keep all receipts and don't be scared to take them to small claim court.
You are so so so so so fortunate to have a dad like yours, with so much knowledge and so much love to want to help you! I’d give anything. Your dad needs a huge thank you when this is all done, you should surprise him with a little dad and daughter trip as a thank you.
Agreed, neither of my parents have ever done anything to help..only harm. It sucks being in the world completely alone sometimes but at the same time I have been told my countless people that I'm wise beyond my age & honestly I'm grateful for that.

Absolutely. Growing up with only a Mom, I don't miss that I didn't have a Dad BUT there are times...like with Morgan's Dad where I just admire. Awesome parents always stand out. Your Dad is the kind people wish/hope for.

related so much to this. Being a single woman, especially a parent and people thinking I'm a young naive woman. That it gives them the opportunity to take advantage of me and my money. I am so lucky to have uncles and my grandpa who educated me on so much. 🌻
You are 100% correct. My direct experience working along side contractors/installer companies… they will absolutely nickel and dime any possible opportunity they can. Glad you’re standing your ground and doing research!
My response to the first window guy's email would have been: "Since you clearly aren't understanding that I don't have a husband, and insist on me asking him about the decisions I'm making, I asked my non-existent husband what I should do. Due to his lack of ability to answer because he doesn't exist, we both decided to seek windows elsewhere." 🤣🤣

The morgan pep talks/rants always make me feel better about where I am in my life in the moment. It just brings comfort that everyone is on a journey and life gets a little crazy sometimes 🤷🏻♀️
The tiny house/coop is going to look amazing... And please don't take it the wrong way, but I Just wanted to give Ya some advice if you're going to put chickens in there with that kind of flooring... it's going to be super hard to keep clean. The cracks in between each board are going to fill up with chicken poop and then get stuck up under each one with that bottom floor under them. You will have to lift up those boards to clean the poop from under them, or it will build up. Hot weather Breeds Fly activity, and you will have maggots (which smells worse than the chicken poop, Sorry but true) in between and under the boards living in any poop that is left under them. I used Vinyl Sheet flooring in all my coops (I have 3 coops) because its Sooo much easier to shovel it out, along with pine shavings to absorb the mess. It also Protects your wood floor from rotting faster from wet poop, spilled water, and the chickens going in & out when it rains. Sending good vibes on your home renovation.

Sorry for some of the TMI, I 'm not an expert, I've only had chickens for a couple years, but thru Trial & error I'm still making changes on a lot of things. Just trying to help save ya some errors, lol. I have also learned they also poop a lot while they roost at night, so I'm even changing that up, cause they are pooping in their nesting boxes. (mine are open and inside the coop) so going to make the boxes on the side with an exterior access. Crazy Chickens, I tell ya! lol. I love your Video's, you are truly blessed!

When it comes to the whole seasonal depression thing, I think in the winter I feel calmer. Like in the summer I look at my stomach more and worry about how my arms look and how long ago I shaved, etc. Whereas in the winter I can wear sweaters and be comfortable and not have to stare at my insecurities 💁🏻♀️
Yesss 100x this. That is exactly how I feel and I definitely tend to dread the summer months.( and not only because I'm in texas and it's 100+ most days lol ) Glad I'm not the only one that feels like this tho(: seems like everyone loves summer that I know
Agree! This spring is the first in years that hasn’t made me depressed. But spring and summer just made me feel more ….lonely, like you should be super happy and doing things like everyone else. Winter made me feel cozy and safe.

When we got our apartment renovated our project manager/interior designer added a clause to the contract with the contractors company: any work done after a certain deadline would be unpaid. You can be sure it all got done in time, and I feel like 80% of the work was done in like 2 weeks lol

Morgan, make sure you get written quotes from all of the contractors. When y’all agree to move forward with one contractor, make sure there is a contract with every detail of what they are doing.

As someone who comes from a construction family, I can understand where you are coming from. We do our best to work within the budget that we are given, and produce the best quality work from that. The ONLY time my father and grandfather will change the price. Is if the cost of materials changes. However, we don’t change stuff up that much or for a crazy amount. We believe in having a good standing with our customers. If we didn’t have good standing, we would not get new customers. We pride ourselves on out customer service and quality of our work! My father’s tile work has been in MULTIPLE Texas living magazines. We are a small, family owned and operated business in Texas. I get where you are coming from Morgan. Some people only care about the money and do everything they can to screw people.

there are plenty of genuine businesses and workers out there, but sadly so many dodgy sole traders. I'm from Aus and work in retic and I see it alllllllll the time. 😢 my work really cares about our clients and the quality of our work but there are cowboys out there who will say anything to win a job and then do a terrible job (or just take off with a deposit).

The only people I would trust, is him and my grandfather’s business. We are a small company, but very good at our craft. It is made up of my grandfather, father, cousin, and myself. Small company but excellent quality work. My grandfather has been doing it for over 50 years

Contractors will always take the highest paid job and blow off the smaller projects. I used to work in construction and our company left a bunch of angry people on the back burner.
Also shortages will delay a lot of construction jobs right now. I hope you do get things done soon. It took 3 years for my aunt to get her renovation done 😬
I am proud of you, seeing you since you started UA-cam is amazing. I am 36 and only in the last 4 years have I realized that I can do things on my own. I'm a widow with a 12 year old and it's been tough. But when the apartment I rent charged me 380$ to patch a whole my brother showed me how to fix it for 30$. It's easier to fix it yourself especially with all the videos online! Keep up your spirits and good luck on the rest of your home!

I feel so incredibly happy for the warmer weather, I’ve been spending all my time outside in our home’s patio, but since I have pollen allergies every day i wake up with swollen sticky eyes. It goes away after I wash my face, so its soooo worth it. But then again I also love every weather they come with their own challenges but they also hold special times of the year. Also love you Morgan!
Absolutely loved it! And I agree, the hardest lesson I had to learn was that people are not always who they say they are. Even family members can be just as swindly (not a real word) but you know what I mean. I think it’s awesome that you’re going for your PhD, self awareness is such a great quality to have and a super interesting topic. I 100% have reverse seasonal depression, I don’t really mind the spring as long as it’s a breezy day but any ounce of heat I instantly become depressed and don’t want to leave my house and can’t function at all. I thrive in the fall and cold weather. As long as I got my layers or even just a jacket to throw on here and there, I’m good. Put that in your notes LOL😂
Let us all take a moment at how wonderful Morgan is and her parents are. The self reliance and ingenuity and the close family support and unconditional love. 10/10.

I know a lot of shady stuff happens in construction and it's hard to find good people! I lucked out meeting my husband because he knows how to do drywall, framing, roofing and a lot more. We live in colorado too! Keep your head up and eventually you'll find someone who isn't looking to take advantage of you and does wonderful work ❤

Girl when I tell you the sexism and ageism in the construction field is so real. As a single girl in my 20’s I’ve had the rudest, slimiest things said to me by grown men in that field trying to take advantage. They thought I was an easy target because of my age and I’m a girl. They had another thing coming 😂 keep your chin up bc there are some absolutely amazing people in that line of work as well. It just takes patience weeding through all the assholes lmao

I’m sure you know this, but you have a really good dad. Not just that he’s helping you by building you a chicken coop, but that he’s doing it WITH you. He’s teaching you how to do all this stuff and you’re working together… and that’s just beautiful. My dad is great and does lots of stuff for me too, but it’s not usually him teaching me how to use power tools and build things myself! He usually just does it… often cursing as he works until he gets to a satisfactory completion… LOL! Anyway… that’s all… it just warms my heart to see you all working as a team. 🥰

I totally have the reverse of seasonal depression. I love the fall and colder weather, while I hate the summer and the heat. I love it being cold because I can put on more clothes or use a blanket, while when it's hot you can only take so many articles of clothing off.

Lemme say yes, I'm the seasonal depression case where I get it from Summer. Not so much Spring. But summer has this anxiety to me about it like you have to be out doing something all the time, a pressure to be extra social or feel guilty for hiding inside on a sunny day.

I would say it is an empowering experience as someone who did not come from the typical PhD background. Go for it and keep us updated on your studies! I really like hearing about it! I'm loving the quality time with Dad! He would LOVE it. I've bought a house I'm slowly doing stuff to and I always get my dad to help me when painting etc. Even though I can do it on my own because he has shown me I know he loves helping me and it's a good chance to hang out
I live on a 15 acre ranch in the mountains of Montana, with my husband and my mom. We have a working ranch, we raise, and grow, all of our own food. And we grow and raise our pets their food as well. We just added Chickens to our ranch this year, and I built the coop with all recycled material as well! Awesome job so far! Can’t wait to see the finished result!
For anyone wondering, the chapstick that Morgan's mom gave her is actually called Chicken Poop. It's a good brand and the reason why it's called Chicken Poop is because the woman who started the company said that her grandma used to tell the young girl that she would spread chicken poop on her lips because she had dry lips. it would prevent her from licking them. At least that's how I remember it. The lady of the brand is from Kansas and I live in Kansas and that's how I know about the chicken poop story. It's been in Kansas for years, so I've seen it around here for along time. It's a super clean lip balm and they only use 6 ingredients. I got it off the website.
hey Morgan! I love that you are getting into construction! Girl power! I work for a construction company right now and I can tell you why they change their prices and act shady. It’s normally because right now the demand for workers is so high that most construction workers don’t have the time, so they increase prices also because the cost of material is increasing. We often throw out different prices for different customers.
