I was actually amused about her story, but in my local area beavers are actually known to be vitally important for maintaining wetlands and a host of other biodiversity. Even more interestingly with the current wildfires in the west coast of the U.S. is that they apparently create natural safe havens for animals to escape from the fires, making untouched oasis. So I agree with Emily they should re-introduce them back into the wild. (I am quite certain she knows more than I, but figured might as well add some fun info for anyone who reads.)

That said, beaver fever is a real thing. You need to watch out if you drink from water where beavers are.

Fantastic video James! I began totally agreeing with you , however, by the time I finished watching, I feel you need to add an amendment. The conclusion I came to, was that having a partner or friend like your wonderful wife Emily, that is willing to accompany you on these trips is the icing on the cake, especially one that is kind enough to feed you, be your researcher, one that watches your back, humours you, wine and dines you, tells hilarious mice stories, takes the blame for mis-direction and most importantly understands how a photographer thinks when he/she is in that moment of inspiration by being a partner that is willing to patiently wait (even in adverse conditions) allowing the photographer to hopefully realise the shot! That my friend is the ultimate! 🙏🏾

I have to admit that, as a Canadian, I am so envious of you Brits. I realise that it takes you some time and effort to get to sites, like this, but, in many cases, you are within a few hours of magnificent scenery. Where I live, in Ontario, I need to travel thousands of kilometres to see anything shown on the video. Keep it going!

Not too long ago, a friend and I both upgraded our cameras, and a few weeks later, took a multi-day trip just to try them out. In addition to getting some good shots on that trip, it was also a chance to see what we now had the ability to do (would you know, cameras improved after a decade), and thus what to read up on/play with before the next trip. That trip paid dividends compared to going out locally for a short while many times.

Great film! But you left one thing out... Last year I ventured to the Isle of Skye and got to photograph The Old Man of Storr too. That fateful day I decided to pack my bag with every photographic tool I own because, well, it doesn't look like that long of a walk. Anyway, that hike up there was grueling! Our party suffered a great loss as two of our four surrendered to exhaustion on the assent. Being Scotland in autumn, it was cold, so I layered. By the time I summited, well, I was pretty much just wearing long underwear, hiking boots, and a voluminous backpack bursting with gear and me dripping in sweat... it wasn't a good look... even for an American.

My memory of Isle of Skye is constant raining. We arrived with our motorcycles frozen in to the bones to the Tallisker distillery all wet through. Normally I am very restricted to drink alcohol when driving on two wheels but this day I calculate that we should be at the distillery for a while so that drum we were offered on arriving was quickly swept. When leaving some hours later the weather was some what better and we were able to see the beauty of the island. I hope I can visit this island again and with my camera and having better weather.

Your vlog that so beautifully showed us the rocks and the mist,
has without any doubt put Skye on my list.
Your humorous tales of your photographic life,
as you wander around with your good lady wife,
have encouraged me to cease my repose,
and with Camera in hand go out and over or under expose (probably),
the world around me as best as I may,
in the hope of achieving a more fulfilled day.
This desire to take pictures I’m forced to surmise,

nice - Skye is amazing. Fairy pools used to be so nice but they are now overrun by tourists, many getting out of wee coaches and being sent up a path not really knowing what they are looking for. If you can get a swim in them they are magical but they are best when you have them to yourselves which may mean time travelling 20 years back.

That Emily is a wise women, always go prepared with food, water, woolly hats.... Not everyone is a landscape photographer and after years of climbing up steep hills in the cold wind and rain, I’m happy that you do it and I can watch. Have a ton of photographic interest in the back garden or a few miles from the front door. Went out for wedding anniversary tea in the week, found great delight in getting snaps of the posh NT venue without irritating others....... So happy not to waste money on trips and have it for more gear if I want it. Don’t worry no tripod purchases necessary in this household! That was a very enjoyable piece of video. So I don't know how many times I've seen the obligatory b-roll shot of the landscape photographer walking past the camera en route to a spectacular vista. The shot of you and Emily walking past the camera deep in conversation was brilliant and so much a breath of fresh air! I would much rather see a couple rabbiting shite as they stroll though the landscape than the forced determination of someone ... okay enough you get the picture! 😁 I was supposed to be on the Isle of Mull back in May for a photography workshop and I'm really sad it didn't happen. It has been rescheduled for May 2021 but the way America has been dealing (or not dealing) with the "you know what" we might not be allowed into Scotland next May either! 😞 And finally beavers ... we love them here in New Hampshire and Maine! It is very rare that you don't see a Beaver Dam on a waterway when I'm out and about on my hikes! I'm not an expert on beaver but I do like their big floppy tails and their big tree chopping teeth! 😁

lovely to get out - it's a crazy year. Loved Skye and your trip reminds me I need to head back again (last visit 15 yrs). Not so sure about beavers? Was in south America 2 years ago. Large parts of natural woodland devastated by beavers near Ushuaia in Argentina. Once they get a foothold they can quickly chew their way through a lot of woodland, damming rivers and seriously affecting local habitat to detriment of some other species - be careful what you wish for. Just saying.

Great video, great landscape, great photos even with typical scottish weather. Brings back very pleasant memories. Will you sometimes share your experience with the Lumix S5?

James...great stuff as always. I love the smooth jazz music you use. I’d love to see you do an episode where you are not permitted to post process. You have to trust that your knowledge and the advanced technology of your equipment will yield the best results. I’m wondering if we are getting to the point in 2020 where cameras are advanced enough that post could become a thing of the past.

Emily reading the book on top of the rock with the amazing scenery underneath was a killer shot! How did you miss it???

8:55 She is so right though. If you have loads of food with you anyway, why not bring it in a cooler if you're going by car? It gives you the option to stay longer after sunset if the scene turns out to be great in the blue hour, you might decide to hang around for some astro photography because light pollution turns out to be very little...
But most importantly: do *not* contradict the one that prepares your meals. Ever. :)

Great video, I see James has invested in a new jacket, the colour is more toned down unlike the bright orange 🤣. You have such a good and understanding wife! Making sure your nutritional requirements are met for all the hard photography work your producing! I say give Emily a gold medal 🤣

I have the book that you were using James. It's an amazing book and very useful when you live in Scotland like myself. I hope you enjoyed Scotland and come back soon. Would love to tag along on a shoot with you one day.

Made me jealous James. I had booked to go to Skye in early May then the C word happened. I was thinking for rescheduling for Oct but wasn't sure if the border would be closed so I have done what you suggested and booked somewhere 'inspirational'....The Lake District! Oh, by the way...my research on The Fairy Pools indicated to get there early but if not that most people stop at one of the early waterfalls and if you walk on past those the crowds thin out a lot. I am hoping to get to Skye next April or May...fingers crossed.

Awesome video. You and Emily together are the best! And don't worry I did listen to the photography stuff as well. And I do hope you make a video when you do go back to the waterfall.

What a thoroughly delightful piece, with some gorgeous sights, and some sights of the gorgeous Mrs. Popsys.
