  • This week me and my camera get very wet, and also make a very silly mistake. I'm out in Snowdonia again taking photos early in the morning, and I discuss what I think are the two kinds of photographers.

I go out with the intent to take photos and come back glad I just got to be outdoors.
Over the years I have finally reached a point that I can shrug off missed situations. For example, at a beach I frequent once or twice a year was entrenched in fog and I found a nice minimalist composition. While I was cleaning the mist off my glasses, I watched five blobs low to the ground fly across my scene honking as they went by. Well at least I knew the blobs were geese since they announced it. No picture but I did get a good laugh. 😁

I deffinitly find with just a simple prime like my Nifty 50 (my only prime) and running it in Apature mode I can get plenty of "shots of opportunity" without much fuss or indecisiveness, also makes the Camera silly lite so I can have one hand on it most of the time, having to fight a heavier or more complex lens deffinitly eats into the fun a bit.
But I agree, even if I only get a couple shots, a good walk is always worth it

I used to get in my car and just drive and drive, stopping occasionally to shoot something out the window. I used to go to a state park in Kentucky simply because they had buffalo there. I rarely walk a trail. And yet, I used to get photos that I was really proud of. I wish I could get myself back out there because I do love nature, just not the walking (or the driving) anymore. At 68, the knees are shot. So I'll just enjoy watching you!

I'll often bring my camera along on bikerides, that added range can let me get to many more varied spots to shoot at/from even if I don't stay to far from the road.
Then again I'm out in a small city in the Canadian boonies here in BC with only modest traffic and lots of mountain roads that challenge even my E-Bike, so your mileage may vary

I continue to be amazed and envious that you can walk through woods, with a road even, and not encounter another human. I've never been anywhere like that. I haven't even been in "woods," but if I had there'd be people (and vehicles) everywhere. Thanks for taking us along.

  • @David_Quinn_Photography

If you want to look at the same question from a slightly different angle, the two types of photographer that I think about a lot are: photographers who make functional works vs photographers who make art.
To explain it simply, to borrow your own language, a photographer who makes art takes photos "about something", where as a photographer who is making a "functional work" takes photos "of something".
The reasons I find this to be an important distinction:
    1. IP law treats functional works differently than creative works.
    2. There is generally a significant difference in price between the two.
Some people hire a photographer to plan, direct, shoot, edit, and deliver creative works of visual art, and they tend to pay a premium for that artistic endeavor. Other people hire a photographer to snap a bunch of photos to document an event or subject and just expect them to turn over a memory card full of un-edited JPEGs at the end of the session, and they're typically expecting to pay a lot less for a job they consider low-skill labor.
Combining these two points together, in the first case, the artist photographer generally retains the copyright on the photos they deliver. Where as the photographer who just hands over an memory card at the end of the session is typically creating a "work for hire" and the client owns the copyright (not the photographer).
Legally, there's a lot more nuance to this language and a lot of grey area that varies by what laws may exist in a given jurisdiction.
Socially, I think there is a problem that both of these categories describe very different activities which happen to share the exact same title: Photographer.
As a result, I've observed confusion and misunderstandings occur between photographers and clients who each made a different assumption about what "photographer" means in a given context.
Both types of photography are necessary and valid, but aside from sharing a name, they're really two completely different worlds that don't have a huge amount of overlap once you get beyond the equipment and the basic operation thereof.

I try always to take my ebike when shooting, or getting out. Helps me get around faster with limited amount of time with good light changing weather conditions and or to travel farther with less effort. As for 2 types of photographers. I don't think they are mutually exclusive. Sometimes I go out to get the shot. Sometimes I get the shot while I am out enjoying my time out.

There's a place I found overlooking a canyon cut by the Agua Fria River in Arizona, that I've been trying for a while to get a good shot of. Weather still wasn't cooperating this time either and I didn't get the shot I was hoping for. • @extremesportscarl

Hey this is actually a subject I'd love for you to develop on. I live in the Alps and would consider myself as the first person, taking photos is the secondary activity but of course taking quality photos is still important. To that point, it frustrates me carrying around a dslr with kit lens; it's far from practical when you need your hands and the strap mount doesn't particularly interest me. I'd love a video about how close a decent compact can get to the results of a dslr or mirrorless. Comparison vidéos do already exist of course, but they're all content creator YT rubbish so are as useful as a chocolate tea pot. Personally, so long as the image is good and editable I don't care for carrying 400g swappable lenses, so have been investigating cameras like the LX15, rx100/vii, the key being that they fit in a pocket, protect their own lens and open with a single hand

I've just taken up photography and come across your channel and find it interesting/helpful. It's a pretty expensive hobby, I bought the Nikon D5600 bundle (extra lense) with a little carry case and memory card. In total it cost just under a grand. I'd like a waterproof bag, is they one that you could recommend me? Also any lenses? I have an Instagram account just for my photos taken on my new camera if you'd like to see it? Maybe give a few pointers? I can link it if you'd like to see them?

I create a story, a journey a discovery. Video titles mean everything. That and the right music. Creating 5D with the 5D. My own reality. I research an area beforehand, but am always ready for unexpected surprises. Sometimes, video, sometimes stills.
