Anker's PowerHouse Is The Biggest Battery Bank I've Seen

  • The Anker Powerhouse lives up to its name: with 120,000 mAh/400 Wh of theoretical capacity, it's nine pounds of pure aluminum-clad power. When we talk about battery banks, normally we mean the kind of battery you slip in your pocket to power your Pokemon hunt. This ... is not one of those. Join MrMobile for the Anker Powerhouse review!

    [ABOUT THIS REVIEW]
    This video was published after four days with an Anker Powerhouse review device, on loan from Anker. This was enough time for one charge/discharge/charge cycle, during which the Powerhouse was used to charge a MacBook Pro Retina 15, Galaxy Note 7, Moto Z, and an undisclosed mobile device.

    This should've included a USB Type-C charger, since a lot of laptops support that now and that would be more efficient than converting from DC to AC to DC again, through the wall charger.

    Y'know I'm so glad you're talking about this and not the Note 7. Everyone else is still doing the Note 7 vs the Note 5; the Note 7 vs the S7 and S7 Edge; the Note 7 drop test; the Note 7 camera review, the Note 7 add nausium, it's disgusting. I'm just so glad you're not doing all of that shit, and you've moved on from the Note fuckin' 7, and you're getting on with the business of doing tech reviews. Good on you man... This is one of the reasons why I remain a subscribed fan.

      AVA4444 I'm certainly not a rich man but I can afford one, I used to have the Note 2, Note 3 and Note 4. I was a genuine fan, they're brilliant phones, the best of the best, and at one time the only phone I wanted to use. I just prefer the S7 Edge, which is what I use these days (also have an iPhone 6 plus, and Moto X Force). I just can't believe the coverage the Note 7 is getting, Pocketnow for instance, Michael Fisher's old employer, are just doing oodles of videos on it, just about every UA-cam tech talking head won't shut up about it... I just think there are other techie things to talk about, thankfully so does Mr. Mobile. The Note 7 is no doubt the best phone around right now, and if I owned one I'm sure I'd be as pleased as punch, but we get the message, enough already, let's talk tech again...

      @william6909 8 років тому

      Nah, it's not that. I can afford one. But it is annoying, all those videos and 100 times the same thing. AND even ads are including Jon from TLD with Note 7. This world has gone mad! =D

    • @william6909
      @william6909 8 років тому

      I got myself a week or so ago the S7 Edge, too. Very good phone, and I enjoy using it. I have iPhone 6S Plus as my second phone, which I like for different reasons. I watched Note 7 videos, made the decision towards S7 Edge, and I am done with it. But those constant uploads of the same videos are annoying.

    It would probably be much easier to use some car batteries with an inverter and stuff on it. I have a Stanley pack meant to jump a car and charge phones and provide light. I just hooked an inverter onto the alligator clips. it's under $100 altogether. and i think it could easily benefit from a lighter socket on it, which should be easy, since it's just a normal lead acid battery. it even has it's own charging circuit.

    Honestly buy yourself a booster pack l, the same you would use for a car, and get yourself an inverter. That's it, more power for longer because it's meant to jump a car 10+ times. I don't have the specs but I've been doing this for about a year and have no complaint camping, or when power goes out.

    Anker is one of the few companies making LiIon based battery products, whose spec's seem mostly honest in my experience as an engineer who views videos like this as sloppy on details. I note from the pictures that this is a 4 series by 9 parallel configuration of 36 solder tab style 18650 cells, which are readily replaceable by anyone with standard electronics tools (no air soldering or robotic pics required, or spot welding), but would cost over $100 for the parts using any quality brand.
    That also means the cells are rated around 3300 mAH, which is credible, unlike dishonest brands. Calling this 120k mAH uses the common fraud of the sum of cell ratings, in a series-parallel circuit where the real AH capacity is just the parallel elements, while the series ones boost voltage (IOW, 14.8 VDC, 29 AH actual). In a smaller Anker pack I have, I find the IQ circuit actually works as described, and is not just marketing hype.
    Compare this unit to car booster unsafe spec fraud packs. Many of those with 84% less real capacity claim outputs 6 times higher than this unit, for $40-80. No wonder those catch fire, explode, or shut down in 3-10 seconds. But, mostly honest spec's and safe designs do come at a price. There's also the issue that cells can never discharge 100%, and cycle life is degraded faster if they're deeply discharged repeatedly.... but at least this unit has the appearance of being good for the claimed purposes with real spec's, even if that normal fine print is absent.
    Unlike many Amazon reviewers, I paid cash (albeit on sales and promo's often) for any product I've inspected, often by opening cases, researching component markings, and using electronic test equipment typical of electronics engineering.

    Not a bad product, all things considered. But they make computer battery backups, for home use. They are called UPS's, and they stand for UN-interaptable Power Supply 's. They are sold at most stores, for much less then this one is. Of course, they aren't as portable.

  • @SimplyChem32
    @SimplyChem32 7 років тому

    I'd like to see something like this, but removing the "middleman" so to speak, removing the need of an internal 120v inverter altogether. Of course, that would require you to know the output voltage and current of your device, but it would drastically increase efficiency.

  • @opinionatedcheapskate-outd2462
    @opinionatedcheapskate-outd2462 8 років тому

    If you want a huge heavy brick like this, just get a deep cycle marine battery, a trickle charger for it, and an inverter. It probably isn't even a pure sine inverter since they don't advertise that it is. Bottom line is that you can recreate everything this does for well under $100. Lithium Ion batteries are not even remotely cost competitive with lead acid batteries for this kind of an application where weight and size are largely irrelevant.

    Cant run a microwave? The powerhouse ran my WHOLE DJ SET!
    That being 2 turntables, Mixer, and speakers! total of 5 plugs running through ONE surge protector!
    Started Powerhouse at 100 percent full battery ran whole set up for 5 hours straight! battery percentage remaining was 56 PERCENT!!!

    cool for most but
    its more affordable
    to make a solar power generator with the exact
    components for around
    hundred bucks : )
    $400 is alot for
    a battery pack unit : )
    awesome video

    If this is targeted for people who go camping etc it has some good potential. It does have its flaws though it's not ruggedized and it has no IP protection from water. However it maybe useful if there is an energy out in your house.

    Hi Mr Fisher, I didn't know you were still reviewing, I thought you went radio silent. The Pocket now Reviews aren't the same without your voice. I dunno what it is, it's just not as pleasant to listen to. Guess I'll crash here instead :P

    Only sold in the US, glad I found out about this before I bought any of the Anker products in my cart, never support any region-exclusive peddlers.

    This 120,000mAh rating is borderline false advertising and annoys me how well it fools customers. As someone who has actually built a homemade version of what this is (see my channel if you're interested in that), it annoys me how people see this as 120,000mAh.
    It says right on the back of the unit the nominal capacity. 434Wh / 14.4v = 30.14AH or about 30,140mAh. The ONLY way you can say this is a 120,000mAh or 120Ah battery is to take the voltage of the individual cells within the unit and count that as the nominal voltage. However, it would be incorrect to do it that way. This is a 14.4v battery unit, not a 3.7v battery. The rating should be listed at about 30Ah or 30,000mAh of capacity.

    I know it wasn't immediately possible using the power bank but do you usually work solely off the MacBook in the office/home? No external monitor or peripherals?

    Is this worth the money and how much charges can this take to charge an iPad Air 2 and Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from 20%-100%? So, the powerhouse powerbank starting from 100% charge till it dies or gets really low?

    • @itsGuy
      @itsGuy 8 років тому

      I always say 60% of the capacity is what you will really get out of anything.. so 120,000 Mah slash it down to 60% so realistically you get 72,000 Mah. (could be more but just doing my 60% thing it's not scientific here) so iPad air 2 has 7,300 Mah battery and note 7 has 3,500 let's say 10,800 Mah between the two, you can charge them from 0 to 100% maybe together 6 .5 so it's really good. (once again this is not accurate, just guessing and from past experience with power banks)

    Or you could build your own for a little over $100 bucks, and have a solar panel and charge controller for $235 or so.

    A power bank with solar charging would be a great idea, since you mentioned this could be used in natural disasters etc
