As of July 2022, a majority the CN’s Dash 8 fleet has been either sold or scrapped.

At least one c40-8m is preserved at the Alberta Railway Museum, which is extremely lucky, although unfortunately most if not all the other ones are probably going to be scrapped.

This is so devastating. I absolutely love these locomotives so much that I wish they were left alone and I wish people had a chance to see them. And it’s so upsetting to hear about what’s happening.

6:35 Can never get enough of that iconic and also nostalgic K5H horn. More railroads in North America should use it.

Pretty amazing that a few are still running. I’ve seen some recent shots of 4609 and 2466 in service. But I’m pretty sure 2456 was spotted headed to Chicago Heights last week to be scrapped.

Despite disliking both railroads, I love the locomotives. I recently bought the only available 8-40CM on eBay with plans on purchasing two more and have buy some MLW locomotive shells (616, SD variants) through shapeway. Looking to keeping their history alive in model railroading.

  • @importednascar

As of October, 2020, I've been getting extremely disturbing reports that not only has CN sold off their C40-8M's for scrap, they're selling off the EX ATSF/BNSF C40-8W's, along with the EX LMSX C40-8W's. As a Conrail fan, I am extremely disappointed in this, as I've already dealt with the same thing happening with Norfolk Southern's C40-8W's being sold for scrap earlier this year!

They are not scrapping them all. At least not yet. There were a few that did get sold for scrap (presumably ones that were in worse shape), but the rest are still on the roster. Most of them are in storage right now but a bunch have returned to service as traffic levels rise back to normal.

@@danielfantino1714, they took forever to load. They rocked like you wouldn't believe and were a very uncomfortable ride. The interiors fell apart pretty quick too. Of course, they were a vast improvement over the Dash 7s, which were designed by some mad scientist, and I won't ever get into U boats. Overall, the Dash 8s were junk and faster they scrap those miserable rattle traps, the better.

@@gregwasserman2635thanks a lot Grég, always good to have crew impressions, cause that´s where you "live"..interesting also feedbacks from mechanics. Railfans love / hate affair is rather subjective. I remember in summer 79, ya, a "few" decades ago, in CP cab of 4744, the unique M640 now preserved when she stalled in Montréal Hochelaga grade. A rather stiff climb that start in Moreau yard against Montreal´s harbor entrance, pass along closed Angus shop. It was a transfer job to St Luc yard. Full throttle the poor beast went slower and slower, a few inches at a time, then 1 and finally 0. The exhaust sound straight below Rachel street overpass. Wheel slip light flashing non stop, the sound...sand did nothing. So heavy that loco, no vibrations, nothing unlike bouncing switchers.
Ah souvenirs of youth...finally 3 RS3 pushed us and the grade was hardly conquered. Oups...tonnage miscalculation....
      Be safe Greg

Minus CN 44 & 70 tons, those cowl units or Draper Taper were the first GE in Canada and for that reason, at least one should have been preserved. Railroads have their own accounting strategy about donations. Museums and heritage world have their own universe or reasons for accepting or refusing. Only your wallet left. Good luck...or N, HO scale. Crying brings nowhere...sorry. that´s reality.
