  • While many focus on just the September Six, Dr Sara Patterson thinks some others should be included in the story. She discusses the dismissal of several BYU professors who were let go for from BYU not being orthodox enough. We'll discuss the stories of David Wright, Ceclia Conchar Farr, David Knowlton, and others. Check out our conversation...

Might want to revisit the Sonya Johnson excommunication, it wasn’t only for her activities in promoting ERA.

I attended one of the wards in Provo during this process.

Can I ask a question? Is it safe to say that these excommunications would not have taken place today? It seems that the whole culture has changed.

Well, it seems there is a retrenchment going on right now at BYU, so I would say history is repeating itself. I have heard that some professors are getting extra scrutiny, but I haven't heard of any denied tenure lately.

There are examples of temporary hires at BYU Idaho that were not renewed in the recent past. I think that the church tries to avoid excommunications now due to the risk of negative publicity, but indications are that orthodoxy (and boundary maintenance) is still an ongoing process. That said, you will no longer be excommunicated for claiming that Joseph used the seer stone in translation or that polygamy occured after 1890 (both of which may have been contributing factors for Quinn)

The university is a place of different ideas and should be. Like everything it needs a balance. But what I disagree with most about any university is tenure. That’s a joke. Keep up the good work. Love your content.

Over the past 50 years similar anti-intellectual (some would say anti-liberal) purges have occurred repeatedly in many Evangelical universities and denominations. For an example see the documentary 'battle of the minds' about the Southern Baptists.
During that same period, every mainline denomination in the US has experienced fierce infighting and even coordinated efforts by outside groups like the 'institute for religion and democracy' to take control of educational institutions and denominational power structures. The United Methodist Church is splitting right now because of such a battle that has lasted decades.
I think these wars in churches including the LDS against intellectual freedom are really symptoms of the broader culture war. I'm sure Dr Patterson is aware of these patterns across denominational lines and it probably influenced research into this book.
On a personal note, over my adult life I've been fortunate to know a myriad of bright and beautiful people who love God and love the church they were raised in but because they asked the wrong questions or loved the wrong person, or had a different understanding of history they were chewed up and spit out. I've had it happen to me. It's traumatic. We've got to learn to treat our brothers and sisters like they are really our brothers and sisters.

Thanks for the tip on the movie. I'd love to know more about this in other churches, especially among protestants.

You might enjoy a book written by my mentor the Rev Dr Mell White titled 'religion gone bad: the hidden dangers of the Christian right'. Obviously he takes a side but he also gives a lot of great background history.
Also if you Google 'Southern Baptist Convention conservative resurgence' there have been a lot of papers and books written on the topic.

You do know that at every university there are endless stories of deserving academics who get denied tenure. It is the nature of the beast.

But is tithe paying or coffee drinking an issue that could determine tenure in any other university?
