Every dollar is seriously appreciated and enables me to continue making more tutorials
I skipped my class of 1h45min to watch a video of 5min that made me understand my whole course
Thank you so much
I gochu 🤜🤛
I hate how we have to pay thousands of dollars just to end up watching youtube videos to learn something.
Yup it's a pretty messed up system 🤦♂️
I spent all day reading PMBOK and another PMP text book until my head was spinning & then I found this. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Glad I could help! You should check out engineer4free.com/project management for all of the PM videos that it did, you might also find them helpful too 🙂
My instructor taught that lesson in a one and a half hour class and I just understood it in a 5 min. video !
You are amazing thank you !
haha, glad I could help!! =)
same story
If activity A starts at the beginning of day 1, which is called "0", and it ends at the end of day 5, then activity B would start at the beginning of day 6. So when you write "5", it represents the END of day 5, which is the same as the BEGINNING of day 6? So the numbers in all of the boxes in the top left and top right corners represent the END of the day of the number. (I don't know if this is a question, or if I'm just typing this just to type it.)
You explain this way better and more clear than my textbook for the class. THANK YOU!!!!
Glad to hear I could help!! You should check out the rest of the PM videos I made here: engineer4free.com/project-management =)
Simple and sweet lesson.
Thanks a bunch =>
Don't the activities starts begin on the day following the end of the preceding activity. A ends on day 5 wouldn't B being on day 6 and not 5?
Hey Michael, the do, but the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc are abstract labels that represent the times between days, not the days themselves. They come from the way I draw Gantt charts. Watch this video: engineer4free.com/4/how-to-draw-a-gantt-chart You can see that 0 is the beginning of the first day, 1 is the end of the first day AND the beginning of the second day, 2 is the end of the second day AND the beginning of the third day, and so on. These numbers from the Gantt chart of a project translate directly to the ES and EF of activities in the network diagram. Hopefully that helps clear it up!
@@Engineer4Free Yes, thank you for the explanation. I was getting a little confused between some of the other lessons on this where the start days were the next day (number). This does make sense how you are deriving your numbers in this video. Appreciate the follow-up and the link.
God this was explained so much better than what I learned in class! The book doesn't help either just gives a bunch of confusing equations lol thank you! You're a life saver! Thought I'd be on this assignment all day!
Thanks for the comment Cristina! Glad I'm able to help you out =)
THANK YOU SO MUCH! BETTER THAN MY PROFESSOR!
Thanks!! =)
You explained me in minutes what the course I enrolled in couldn't using: 30 pages, 2 Video Lessons and 1 Live Class.
Thank you!
haha, happy I could help!! =) Thanks for watching!
Lifesaver! I didn't understand this concept in class the other day but this helped me so much, I understand it clearly now.
Awesome!! You should also check out all the PM vids I did here: engineer4free.com/project-management 😊
This was a great explanation! How early start and early finish is calculated is so clear to me now and now I understand this is what the forward pass means. In so many teachings they always make it sound like something completely different. Thank you for making this video possible! Now to watch how Ls and Lf is done.
Awesome glad to hear that I’m making sense!! :) :)
IF you finish Activity A at Day 5, shouldnt activity B start at day 6? Day 5 was used for A and the day is over. You cant possibly start B on the same day as A unless you are pulling double shifts. Activity B and C should start at day 6 (Accodring to PMBOK anyhow). Thanks
Valid question
Hey, so AFAIK PMBOK starts their numbering with a 1, but I start with a 0. Either way is fine and a valid way of doing project schedules. If you're studying for PMP or similar, then start with a 1. If your in a university class, then start with whatever number your professor likes to use. Now, as to why I start with a 0, it comes from the way I draw my Gantt charts: www.engineer4free.com/4/how-to-draw-a-gantt-chart Plz take a look at that video. I'm into math, so when I draw any type of chart, I like to assign the axis a value of 0. So did my teacher way back when. But the thing you're going to have to wrap your head around regardless of whether you start with a 0 or a 1, is that every value except the axis value represents TWO points in time. If you start with a 0, then 0 represents the beginning of the first day. 1 represents the end of the first day and the beginning of the second day. 2 represents the end of the second day and the beginning of the third day, and so on. This is why in the Gantt chart video that I linked to above, Activity A is two days long, so it ends on the "2" line, but Activity B also starts on the "2" line. This would translate to A having an EF of 2 and B having an ES of 2. If you were starting the whole system with a 1 instead, all the ES, EF, LS, LF values would just be incremented by 1 because of the shift. Hopefully that clears it up, it's a weird thing that gets asked all the time. And to answer your question clearly about the video we're commenting on, because I start with a 0, when Activity A has a duration of 5, it ends at the end of the fifth day, which we represent with a 5 (go look at the Gantt chart video and count five days on it to see the value), B would then start at the beginning of the sixth day, which we also represent with the number 5. So yeah, your right when you talk about the days IRL, but keep in mind these numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, .... are just labels that we give those points in time.
I replied to the OP. Just pinging you incase you don't get a notification that I replied.
Also, you cant start any activity on day 0 ...... doesn't sound real. Activity can only start from day 1, then you have a formula ES + Duration - 1 to have the EF
Activity B can only start the day after (that is 5 + 1, the 6th day)
I don't see how the Early Finish (EF) of a preceding activity can also be the Early Start (ES) of a subsequent activity. If my team works from 8am to 6pm Mon through Friday, and that Friday is Day 5 of an activity with an EF of 5, the earliest that the next activity (assuming a "Finish-to-Start" relationship with the previous activity) can start is AFTER Day 5 is over. In other words, if an activity will occur from Day 1 through Day 5, it means that Day 5 ends at 6pm and people go home for the weekend. The earliest that the next activity will begin will be on Day 6 (that following Monday). Other than that, this follows with what I've been taught.
So the numbers in the network diagram are labels. These labels confusingly represent two times each (except for 0 which only represents one time). It comes from the way Gantt charts are drawn. See this video: www.engineer4free.com/4/how-to-draw-a-gantt-chart 0 represents the beginning of the first day. 1 represents the end of the first day, and the beginning of the second day. 2 represents the end of the second day, and the beginning of the third day, and so on. This is why in the linked video, Activity A has a duration of two days, and it starts on the beginning of the first day (1) and ends on the end of the second day (2), but then Activity B starts on the beginning of the third day (2) and so on. Confusing? yes a bit, but it's just how it's done, and hopefully seeing the Gantt chart helps show why it is. Just remember that these numbers are always labels!! To make things even more confusing, you can decide if you want the beginning of the first day to be a 0, or a 1. So if you depending on which labelling convention you choose, the numbers will always be off by one from the other convention. However, the logic is the same between.. Thanks for watching, and hopefully this helps to make sense of it!
Question, does activity B start on day 6 or 5? Because it takes 5 days to finish activity A, then the following NEXT day to start activity B? So is Early start for B, 5 days or 6 days?
I pay F 6000$ per semester. And you made my life so easy without losing a penny. Your a legend!!
I gochu =)
Brilliant,Thank You so much
My professor spent 90 minutes and I learned only 20% of what he said, here we go with this video, I learned 100%!
I try to do this, but im getting the wrong numbers compared to my book when it comes to ES... It says that if Activity A is 2 durations Activity B and C will start 1 day after activity A..
The numbers in the network diagram are labels. Hopefully that helps to clarify what's going on!
what the name of book you use ????
These videos are based off of lecture slides from a university course on project scheduling, not a book
Thanks for your video, it's has help me to understand how to calculate the ES and EF
I'm an engineer, and I used to think that I can explain ideas clearly. But after watching your videos, I've learned a lot from your gradual, cumulative and clear approach. Thanks a million!
Thanks so much for this comment Marshal, I'm really glad to get this type of feedback =)
Very Nice ,Thank You so much
You are most welcome! The full playlist is here: engineer4free.com/project-management =)
Please show one with dummy
Yeah, check videos 10, 11, 12 here: engineer4free.com/project-management for examples with dummies 👌👌
dayummmmm that was good thank you
haha, you're welcome Sam! =)
FINALLY. Thank you for the explanation.
Sir, I love the way it is been simplified but now what is the value for the ES and EF??
The values for ES and EF are all written in tne boxes for each activity. Please rewatch and observe the legend
what if there was more than one path to an activity with different value of sum of durations, do i choose the largest or the smallest value to be my earliest start?
I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're asking. There are more videos here: engineer4free.com/project-management I recommend watching videos 4 - 9
Could you do a video about the Cyklogram (Linear Scheduling Method )? I searched many results but none of them talk about it fully.
Hey sorry I don't have anything that covers those. I only have Activity on Arrow (AOA) and Activity on Node (AON) diagrams here: engineer4free.com/project-management
I thought the formula was ES+Duration-1=EF??????
Yes, that is as it is taught for PMP. We use the same overall logic, the -1 just accounts for slightly different labelling scheme. Either way is fine, but if you are studying for the certification, be sure to use their method.
this is the most clear explanation man. Thank u...
why couldn't you have been my professor? x.x
Unfortunately I'm not but at least I can still help you understand and get a good grade!! 😊
I'm a field guy, that is trying to better his scheduling skill. What program are you using for this tutorial , how are you able to have your chart then able to fill-in the boxes without txt style? Its like excel and note shelf in one.
.
Heyo, sorry to report but it's all just hacked together in a drawing program + some video editing tricks. I just draw one boxe template and then copy past them, it's not official PM software. But you can see all the hardware and software that I use here: engineer4free.com/tools and also check the whole PM playlist: engineer4free.com/projectmanagement 🤙
Perfect information
Thanks Muhammad! =)

Thanks for this. I'm taking an online class, and of course the Professor just gives us some vague Powerpoint presentation to base our homework assignment off of, no lecture or reading.
Sorry to hear that, I've got a lot of videos on this stuff, you can check out at engineer4free.com/project-management if you haven't already =)
Great Thank you
Welcome =)
Is it ok to mark activities at the nodes like you have done instead of being over the arrows???
There are two styles of network diagram, one where the activities are the nodes, and one where the activities are the arrows. Check out video #12 here: engineer4free.com/project-management to see a comparison of the two styles.
Excellent tutorial. Congratulations
Great videos, working on my CAPM now and this is a great resource! So thank you. Question, where are your durations coming from? Those are the PERT formula outputs?
My supervisor want to know the earliest time to start maKe cakes with condition 120 cakes must be finished before 3pm to bake in oven...with addition 5 operators...is this method suitable with the problem? If not,can u suggest...thank in advance
Thank you sir soooo much now am done with this...
Awesome video very easy to understand through the the pictorial presentation in the square boxes! !!
Glad you liked it!!!!!! =)
what if you started with 1 instead of zero. does that change your early start time?
There are two conventions for these diagrams. One starts with a 1 and the other starts with a 0. Each convention is off by one for every value when compared to the other for things like ES, EF, LS, LF, but activity duration, float/slack, project duration will have the same values either way. If you are learning to start with a 0, then just do that. If you are learning to start with a 1, then just do that. The numbers 0,1,2,3,4, etc in the network diagram are just labels that represent points in time. If you start with 0, then 0 marks the beginning of the first day, 1 marks the end of the first day and beginning of the second day. If you start with 1, then 1 marks the beginning of the first day, 2 marks the end of the first day and beginning of second day. And so on. Whether you call the end of the first day 1 or 2, it's still the end of the first day. Does that make sense?
@@Engineer4Free Thank you, yes, I actually learned the CPM through your tutorial very easily, (very clear and concise by the way), but then I got a question wrong because the author of the exam started with 1 which changed the ES day (my answer) as you guessed it, by 1. I'll stick with starting with zero. Thank you.
@@Engineer4Free Thank you for the clarification. But I have a confusion that if the Early Finish of the activity A and the Early Start of the activity B are same, which means two activities are starting on the same day, which is not possible as per the dependency. Will this not result in less total duration of the project?
Thank you
You're welcome. You can find the whole playlist at engineer4free.com/project-management too =)
you are my Lifesaver with my exams in a week time I'll be more than ready to tackle it

thanks bro, it's saved me :D
Happy to help =)
I understand clearly now.
Specify the goal and need money

can you help my about his solution of me A project has eight activities (A1 … A8) with 2 weeks duration for each activity. Suppose the starting date is 2/1/2020. A3 depend on A1 & A2, A4 depend on A2, A5 depend on A3, A6 depend on A3 & A4, A7 depend on A6, A8 depend on A5.
/a/ Find: Early Start, Early Finish, Late Start, Late Finish, Total Float, Free Float of each activity and find the critical path. Draw the network diagram without any crossing.
Sozyar Kamal so how do you know my solution
My Teacher Taught me the same things in 2 hours class. How easily you teach us..thanks

Awesome, thanks for the feedback and keep it up!! :)
Thank you for this simple explanation
well explained sir. This video is much helpful to me, i learnt something new. Thank you so much.
Nice videos and explanations but honestly - this stuff does seem... self-evident?
Not really complex or college level material which makes me wonder why so many people are coming here from their courses.
Ultimately these are just logic problems, which comes easily to some but not to others. Seems like enough people are finding these useful to justify making them =)
@@Engineer4Free Hey dont get me wrong, I appreciate your video and it is reassuring + teaching well.

Super Video
what if the activity doesn't connect to a node?
then it is either an initial activity (no predecessor) or a terminal activity (no successor). If initial activity, ES =0, but LS might not = 0. If terminal activity, set LF = EF when starting the backwards pass.
Good explanation , clear and concise , Thanks
You're welcome Eric, thanks for the feedback!!
Bless you sir. This was such an easy explanation!
How to find the slack time?
Hey Anushree, see videos 13-15 here: engineer4free.com/project-management for slack.

Thaaankyouuu for dis vid. 😍
Wrong network diagram
You have taken the activity on node here. where as in problem where you have shown how to draw a network diagram you have taken the activity on arrow, this changes the diagram completely.
Yes. Activity on Arrow and Activity on Node are two different ways that can represent the same project. Take a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/qPl9W5XIEgM/v-deo.html I write the same project with both different types of network diagram.
you are a life saver. thank you

hi! why would some start with day "0" vs. Day "1"?
+Gilmanda S. Atkinson it can really be done either way. Check with your professor which way they do it, and follow that method!
Gilmanda, I think If you start with 1 you’re actually adding a day of calculation. Say 0+1 is 1 day of completion and 1+1 day will give you 2 days completion. Engineer4free is this right? :)
Could you possibly do a video on resource allocation and leveling?
Hey thanks so much for commenting. You made me realize that I made a video on that already but forgot to add it to the website. It's updated now! See videos #25 and #26 on www.engineer4free.com/project-management
