Julian Cope is brilliant - as everyone has said here, his former band The Teardrop Explodes should definitely be on your list (Treason, Reward, Passionate Friend are all no-risk suggestions), and this track was as straightforward "rock" as he ever got (Trampolene and Greatness And Perfection are also great singles) before he started going totally gonzo, though he made plenty more great music on the way... Also - amazingly - he is is genuinely the world's leading authority on megalithic structures (standing stones, stone circles etc.) He's written two huge books, "The Modern Antiquarian" and "The Megalithic European", which are basically the set texts on the subject...
Fond memories Julian was the second concert i went to. This was his pop phase. I really like Trampoline from this album. Reynard the fox is an amazing track, also Passionate Friend from his Teardrop Explodes days. We've not had New Order for a while, The Perfect Kiss or Sunrise from Low Life please.
I saw him open for Siouxsie and the Banshees in Atlanta back in the 80s...might have had the album St Julian already if not got it quick..loved it, great unique sound..try Eve's Volcano, Trampolene and Shot Down as well.
His second solo album, Fried, is absolutely brilliant, a real psychedelic trip, kicking off with the amazing Reynard The Fox, which would be a great one to do next. By the time this song (which is a banger, obviously) came out, the sound was less quirky and more mainstream.
Indeed! Here's one more vote for Reynard The Fox! (Nowadays Mr Cope has gone back, and even further, into weirdness, thank God. Further suggestions from latter-day albums: "Raving on the moor" and "Lard Ass of the Year". But Reynard really is his magnum opus.)
Julian Cope is an alternative gem. He had three albums in the 90s that blew me away (Peggy Suicide, Jehovahkill, and Autogetton). Check out the song "Beautiful Love" from Peggy Suicide. It's super catchy and positively vibrant.
I agree. 'Fried' is also good as is the album 'World Shut your Mouth'. I bought both of these in my late teens when they came out. Also did some great stuff with his original band The Teardrop Explodes.
Bizarre coincidence, I've said before that I live in the.same town as Andy from xtc but I previously lived in the same town as Julian. Very interesting man he is too. Nice work Nick. I'd really like to see you review the band Gene soon. Cheers.
Yeah it's not exactly star central out here but the whole of xtc came from Swindon (I've bumped into the lovely Dave Gregory a few times as a friend plays bass in his band) Pete from the libertines lived in the same town as Julian for a while. As it's a small town you tended to see them often. Julian is very approachable and loves his history of the area these day's. Take care and keep warm over there Nick.
Hey Nick u should react to Heaven Up There by Palace, it is an amazing, poetic song. Palace is a British band that has been dropping great music since 2014 and they are making some of the best rock modern rock music right now. It's a long song but just enjoy the ride
Julian Cope is one of the most intelligent and creative musicians in rock and pop.
Godlike genius

As others have pointed out JC was in the band 'Teardrop Explodes' before he went solo. Try 'Reward' by them next, it's another banger
Excellent voice , passionate friend by Teardrop Explodes is a favourite though
Yep - and Reward, and Treason.

Thanks for this, always liked Julian... his band Teardrop Explodes: 'Reward' is a classic from the early 80s.
Great song love it, hope you’re keeping well 🙌🏻
YAY!!! ❤
Strasbourg and An Elegant Chaos from his first album, Reynard the Fox from his second
This song is great!
So many forgotten classics from 86/87, can you do Chris Rhea , Lets Dance, Stay, Oingo Boingo, Infected, The The, Real Wild Child, Iggy POP...
Great to see you casting your ears and your thoughts on the marvellous Mr. Cope. His 'Safe surfer' is a personal favourite - an epic slow build.
I bought this on 7 inch vinyl and still have it, check out “Treason” or “When I Dream” by The Teardrop Explodes his previous band
Good track.
Were you watching the actual music video Nick? If not, its worth checking out - if only for Julian's amazing extending microphone!
I'll have to check out the video, then!
It's about you!
Well, my goodness!
Yes! Own this, love this although Peggy Suicide kills.
Bizarre coincidence, I've said before that I live in the.same town as Andy from xtc but I previously lived in the same town as Julian. Very interesting man he is too.

I remember you saying that! You just love living around stars!

Have you reacted to any Teardrop Explodes - that band he was in previously?
