Awesome video! I own a 1980 yz250, 1982 yz490 with the 465 cylinder, and a 1981 it175. Gotta love the old air cooled 2stroke bikes. Easy to work on, less moving parts to wear out or break and these bikes are fast still to this day. Carson Brown is a legendary rider too.
I lived in Colorado Springs back in the early to mid 70s and a good friend of mine who is passed, had a 1975 YZ125 I believe it was the first year of the Monoshock I could be wrong maybe it was a 74. It was so radical easy to ride and fast for back then. Those were fun times! When people talk to each other and didn't have their nose into the phone.
It would be the 125C and it came out in late 75 I believe. I raced a early 73 model, (the 74's were the same just painted yellow like the works bikes) with the shouldered akront stye wheels. My dad had that bike pretty tricked out with some Noguchi parts and we moved the shocks up on as everyone one was doing back then. After Team Maico and Willi Bauer won the 73 USGP at Carlsbad with their shocks moved up six inches or so the genie was out of the bottle and so ended the traditional short travel twin shock design and by the the end of the decade all of the Japanese bikes were single shock....only Husqvarna and Maicos were still long travel twin shock design. Odd since Maico pretty much kick started the suspension revolution with that win at Carlsbad in 73....and yeah I was at that race at the ripe old age of 13. By the time mid 75 rolled around I was racing a Bultaco 250 Pursang. Good times for sure....miss those days with my dad.
@@EarthSurferUSA I'd bet money on yes. No disrespect to someone like Barnett, but a lot has been learned about riding since then. Just Carson's ability to scrub and manual gives him a time advantage.
Haha.....No. No it can't. Great bike in it's time , but it's about 10 -12hp down on the new 125's. Plus......the newer 85cc bikes even have a more robust / sturdy forks , clamps and rear shock. But if you ride like Carson does.....he can make anything rip!
@@jeffro5032 I don't know how much love you guys are talking about, or what love means to either of you,---"but with enough money, I can make a coffee table go fast.". PS, that is actually an old paraphrase from 80's MXA. :)
@@EarthSurferUSA I was getting at , you just can't squeeze enough power out of certain bikes , no matter how much money you throw at them. Take the 2000 - 2007 CR125 for instance........10K couldn't get one of those motors to even get a whif of a stock KTM , Husky , Gas-Gas , ect..... Now throw in just 1 - 2K into one of these newer machines , and it's almost a different class compared to those older 125's. I have a modified TC125 putting out 41HP. That is only 2HP less than my mid 90 250's. Slight motor changes and HUGE electronic changes are the difference. Among chassis and suspension.
I still say the old non-powervalved 2strokes were the best! The powerband just hits harder. Now iam missing my old 79 CR125. That thing was a screamer!
After watching a couple air cooled vids,------------------ I really miss just starting up the bike, and just ripping with out having to wait for the water to warm up.
Yeah from perspective that track looks sketchy as hell with all those trees. Anyway none the less your hauling the mail and the G sounds good. How do you like riding that last of the air cooled YZ125, it's a legendary bike, baddest 125 in 1980.
I had a YZ250, the same year. Mono cross rear suspension. No linkage. 38mm non uds forks,no cartridge. Drum brakes f/r. Air cooling. No power valve....and absolutely ripping. Would have loved to hear his thoughts on the performance esp v a modern KTM
You can still be wrong and safe i guess. That was the standard way to ride a 125cc 2-stroke MX bike for decades before the 4-stroke made us forget how to ride them. Less power makes it easier to wring it's guts out too. But he is hitting some jumps that did not exist back then. It wasn't until about the mid 80's when jumps started getting big.
Go-Pro: Why did you let NBC push you around to keep pro's from using your camera and publishing their work? Should you now change the name to "Go-Amateur"? since only amateurs can use them? You should have fought for your right sell them to pros and for the pros right to publish their work. You should have fought like a Pro,--and recorded it for publication.
The 1980 YZ125G was my favorite motorcycle. It was as light as a feather and so was I! I raced that thing all around Washington State back in the day.
That track is long and sketchy as hell for that small area lol weve been watching him ride that track for years I love it

Thank you for sharing that Robert, I certainly appreciate your experience and knowledge! Those were the days Brotherman!
The bike is like 20 years older than Carson… just think about how many lightyears he would have won the 1980 Supercross title by 😂
Are you sure he would beat Mark Barnett on the 1980 SX tracks?

The full potential of the bike🔥
With enough love it can be just as good as the new 2023

Such a rare talent today. :)

Bikes like riding an xr100 compared to new KTM 😂 look how slow it's going compared to how high it's reving
Wow extreme..
Safe to say thats the most wide open that bike has ever been in its long life 🔥😡
