For me Hummingbird and Bye Bye represents that Ryan knew he was dying, and these songs was his goodbye songs to the world. Rest in peace Ryan. I never knew you but I have loved you and your music for years, and thank you for getting me through some tough times through your music. 😭😭😭😭

It's great that you posted suicide help as some people might interpret the lyrics differently but this song is not suicidal at all.
It's about an astronaut leaving earth as his parents watches and grow old without him. A tenative person means that they are cautious and not very confident because they are uncertain or afraid of what lies ahead. I think this song is about hope and giving courage to step out of your comfort zone to reach your full potential (Don't keep your eyes on the ground... Leaving this Earth's such a beautiful sound), even tho it means making some sacrifices. It's a song of hope, showing us that there's more to life than our little world, if we're brave enough to go out and try.

I get the connection that people make between the lyrics and suicide, but I don't really think that is the intended product of the song. Usually suicidal thought has an emphasis on suffering, and death as a solution to that. "Hummingbird", however, distinguishes itself from that line of thought by focusing on heaven as an object of desire, a wanted state of existance that necessarily overrides the previous one. For me, this song mirrors a lot of my fears and expectations when I was approved to college. I wanted that, I desired to leave and study there, but that reality also meant a tremendous shift on my everyday life, a giant leap out of my comfort zone and the first part of my life without my parents guidance. It is a kind of death to a past self. And with that comes a kind of grief. Does that then, by extension, means a reference to suicide? Yeah, kinda. It's a voluntary termination of yourself as you know it. But unlike it, that death hopefully will nourish a new you, a better you. Maybe it won't, but we'll only know it tomorrow...

yeah, music is a reflection of your mood, I didnt get any suicidal vibes from this song. I thought mostly that this was a song about an introverted person exploring/doing something to make them famous. Taking a leap of faith that would be a big shift in their life. Of course thats probably my projection because im moving and getting into sailing so the themes of packing up and stepping up in life are front and center in my mind.
