Crafting a Personalized Desk Top: Part 1 From Gluing to Grooves!

In my latest woodworking adventure, I'm diving into the exciting process of designing and creating a custom desk top. Before I can unleash my creativity with epoxy and lights, I need to lay the foundation by crafting a desk top that's both functional and stylish.
I begin by carefully selecting and gluing up boards of poplar wood, ensuring a sturdy and durable base for my desk top. After allowing the glue to dry, I meticulously separate the top into two distinct pieces - the outer frame and the inner desk portion.
The bulk of my creative efforts are focused on the inner desk section, where I use a router to carve out motivational words and create grooves for coasters to sit in. These personalized touches not only add character to the desk but also enhance its usability and practicality.
Next comes the exciting part - filling the carved letters and grooves with epoxy resin. This step will add a beautiful, glossy finish to the desk and bring my design to life in stunning detail.
Before wrapping up for the day, I take the time to add a subtle curve to the outside of the outer frame using a round-over bit. This ergonomic design not only improves the overall comfort of using the desk but also ensures that the epoxy will flow smoothly over the surface.
