I met Iturbi years ago...he was my father's conductor (Rochester Phil) and mentor; a complete gentleman and someone to this day that impresses me with his civility.
Jose Iturbi is one of the most gifted pianists of the 20th century, and I love his appearances and his playing in the 1940s films he's in. And those Hungarian Rhapsodies are beautiful. I've played a few of them myself before, but I have never learned to play like him. He was amazing, may he now RIP
No one will probably believe this, but my grandmother and Mr. Iturbi were actually friends. They meant when he played in Independence, Mo. She has a huge scrapbook and pics of them together and letters and cards he has sent her. I have a letter from him that congratulated my grandmother on my birth. My grandmother got me hooked on him. He was 4 when I passed and I really wish I would've been able to meet him, but his music, and the scrapbooks are wonderful keepsakes!
Boy can he play those tremolos. And great dynamics. Top level phrasing in this piece. What CLARITY his playing had, both in the individual notes and in the separation of the phrases. Best playing of this Rhapsody I have heard.
Right on. This IS one of the best performances of this piece I've ever heard, though my all time favorite is Eduard Risler's. But this comes very close.
His Mozart is superb. Very clean cut, perfect "jeu-perlé", perfect balance of brain and heart. He recorded concertos n° 20 & 22 and for 2 pianos KV 365 with his sister Amparo. Sonatas n° 11 & 12 and the fantasie in d. Concerto n° 20 and sonata n° 12 you can find on CD, rest on LP, 2 versions of concerto 20 and sonata 11 & 12.
Iturbi plays this with polish and style. Very beautiful playing. However, I do suspect the cameramen instructed him to make big gestures to make it look more impressive.
The first time I saw Iturbi was on Anchors Aweigh [lol - please don't shoot me XDDD ] I hearted him so much - I liked classical pieces anyway [lived with my grandmother most of my youth] but he blew everyone else out of the water - and he can act awesomely well. XDD
Thank you for posting this, Ms. U. Someday I'll have to read your book and find out how he played with those strangely scrunched up fingers. Wonderful performance here, too bad the sound is not much better than Raoul Pugno's 1903 recording of the piece!

Few performers show as much class as Iturbi. He had such a brilliant technique and aesthetic manner. What a showman! Thanks for the delightful vid.
Perfecta combinación de técnica y musicalidad
Hofman1895 has done it again--a great addition to Iturbi's film legacy. Thanks for immortalizing this wonderfully talented pianist.
his dancing fingers........ one of my three most favourite pianists. He belonged to himself and the piano.
very smooth transitions =]]
and loved his phrasing
He's one of the most complete pianists ever. His rubato, his touch, his "arc" ---- all w/technique to burn ---- virtually perfection.

Una vida 😍 sin escucharlo.
Awesome! One of the world's very best ever. TY.
if you notice, Iturbi was one of the few classical pianists who favored the Baldwin pianos, and always played on those, in shows and concerts.
Grande Iturbi! :)
GRANDE ITURBI ho cominciato ad amarlo fin da piccola sentendolo suonare nel film con Mario Lanza "un bacio a Mezzanotte" G C 15/2/2017
