    Some dude insisted that if I'd be willing to give up my citizenship, it means that I hate America. I told him that was one of the dumbest conclusions I'd ever heard anyone reach, especially since he knows I've served the country for nearly 20 years. The world is a big place, and some places are just more conducive to long-term living for people for whatever reasons.

      In all honestly American is a fail country the country that you were born in serve for 20
      Years don’t provide Americans with healthcare you have to be poor to get free human right health. The truth is American Being double taxes it doesn’t benefit you . You pay double taxes , but the right that we gotta pay double taxes to own houses or own anything is as burden . The fact that evil America make one pay out of pocket cannot afford to get Healthcare or uninsuranced if worse . My husband has cancer I had to leave evil America because our insurance did not cover for his treatment. I went to Mexico where I bought private insurance and it covered it.

    For those living their lives outside of the USA but with a " US person" label, what is the advantage of having US citizenship? None, the nationality is toxic.

      ***** The USA does not have a particularly good record of doing that and on the occasions they have, they have presented the rescued with a bill for their services.
      And most Americans are in stable first world countries and have no need or desire for any such service. Besides, given your five times higher murder rate, your lethal police force and your gun crime many feel safer here anyway.
      You think theoretic rescue of a US citizen from Britain makes the enslavement of Americans ok?
      Americans abroad do indeed need protection, from the USA. Unfortunately we can't protect them, because if we do then the USA will close down our banks. Your government has lost it's collective mind.

    • @mikebreen2890
      @mikebreen2890 8 років тому +9

      ***** And as a side issue, how do you feel about US citizens paying taxes to other countries on their US earnings? Wait, I think you made that clear some time ago. You disgusting hypocrites.

    • @MegaBallPowerBall
      @MegaBallPowerBall 8 років тому +7

      Mike Breen You asked a question ( what's the advantage of having US citizenship abroad?) and I answered it. To answer your second question: We should do what the rest of the adult countries are doing.

    • @mikebreen2890
      @mikebreen2890 8 років тому +11

      ***** You began your answer with one word, "simple". There lays a problem. To write off the persecution of Americans abroad, their families, their businesses on the basis that one day they might get their own black hawk helicopter (for which they must pay) and so it's all ok, is the act of a simpleton. I repeat....The vast majority of these people live in stable countries that are safer than the USA. For those who don't, the chances of the USA ever rescuing them is slim to none. Say, how about the rest of the world persecutes and taxes 50 million Americans and sucks money from the US economy, because one day we might need to rescue them?
      What's your history and roots? How about I demand you are a citizen of my country because your great granddad was born here? Please, no complaints about not wanting our toxic citizenship because one day we might need to rescue you from Texas.
      The rest of the adult world taxes people based on their residence. We don't enslave people based on the notion of citizenship, if they want it or not. The rest of the adult world is not bullying the rest of the world at vast expense to them in order to hunt down our citizens so we can beat them with a tax bat.
      Yes, you should join the rest of the world when it comes to taxation. Currently you are in a club of 2, USA and Eritrea! Oddly enough, in 2011 you were the loudest mouth (surprise) at the UN when demanding Eritrea cease and desist attempting to tax is diaspora or face sanctions.
      The USA then went about doing the same thing but on steroids. Did I mention hypocrisy?

    People are renouncing their US citizenship for more than just tax reasons.
    It's now the 14/01/2018, and those numbers quoted aren't even close to the real numbers who're leaving the USA, I'd multiply those figures by at least ten. Those who can afford to get out and settle elsewhere, are doing so because of the glaring issues they have with American policy, not least because of it's negative impact in their country of birth, but how it's also negatively affecting people in other parts of the world.
    America has funded illegal, war mongering states like Israel by the TRILLIONS over the years, while back home on US soil, people are starving, losing their homes,violence is on the rise, Veterans are treated like garbage after coming home from fighting Israeli false flag wars,and corporations, which America actually is, is destroying the entire fabric of the US society.
    I feel for the people of the USA, they're being destroyed, their kids/soldiers used as cannon fodder for others proxy wars, and people wonder why they're trying to get out?

If you have a foreign spouse as I do who makes all the family income living abroad it can be even worse. A Canadian married to an American may find the U.S. calling their local checking account up the street from where they live a "foreign account" which is ridiculous. It also puts foreign persons married to or working with an American under the same tax reporting burden on their private banking information as IF they were American too. This puts pressure on the American to renounce to solve the situation. Most I have known renouncing don't want to do it but, can no longer function and have a normal bank account where they reside, have had trouble with foreign family who never lived or worked in the U.S. or have had a threat of bank account closure including losing their mortgage. Is congress EVER going to represent these people and solve any of these problems? Upwards of 60 percent would never owe any taxes to the U.S. this is not about taxes. This report is accurate and lets the people involved tell the real story. Very good!! Sadly, I had to relinquish my U.S. citizenship when my spouse who has supported me here in Canada refused to have his bank account information going to a foreign nation with zero suspicion of any wrong doing. Banks here are treating us like suspected criminals. One credit union told us when they learned there was an American in the household that they couldn't give us a mortgage. Fix this mess and make a pathway back to citizenship for those who have been harmed by it. Get your citizens living in the U.S. who off shore but, you can do it without harming expat families who are low to middle income and the working class abroad!!

    For most people who renounce, it's not about the taxes PAID. It's about the forms required to be filled out by the citizens, even if the forms tell the IRS "Sorry, Mr. IRS Man, no tax dollars for you because I already gave it all to the country where I live and work." These forms are specialized forms that most of the tax accountants never see, so being specialized means "expensive rates per hour" when attempting to comply with the law. Meanwhile the IRS in its infinite wisdom has closed almost all the assistance offices overseas just as the compliance got harder! And even worse, the least little mistake can cost you thousands up to half your net worth!
    And when a US Military veteran ends up forced to decide between keeping their citizenship and becoming homeless or renouncing their citizenship so they don't lose their home, there is definitely something wrong with this!

    Citizens of other countries tend not to "love" their countries. They see citizenship as mainly accident of birth, and generally, certainly those in the EU (NOT including being British), are happy with their passports. There is now an exodus from both US and British passports, though for dissimilar reasons. These reasons are perfectly understandable. The most desireable passports to have these days are probably those of a member of the EU. I have long and noteable experience. Lived in the WAshington DC for three years in the mid to late sixties.Paradfoxically, used to sit next to Ronald Regan in our apartment swimming pool, one half of the Regan - Thatcher axis that started the unholy mess the US and UK are in now. Father was a British diplomat. When my parents went home, I stayed on and got a permit to work. Was immediately summoned by Uncle Sam for a medical before being drafted (Please note I was not a US citizen). For some unusual medical reason I failed - I got a 4F - but I returned to the UK anyway. I now live in the Netherlands as a naturalised Dutchman, and am very happy to be so as my former country has gone doo-lally, something foreseen by myself. The point I am trying to make is that people in the EU don't worship their nationality, or get emotionally overwrought when talking about it. John Le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, "I hate America George. the enslavement of the masses, institutionalised". I didn't understand that when I first read the book. Now I see it very clearly. Lack of affordable nealthcare and higher education, lack of vacation time etc. The country is delusional, gun and crime invested, and as the Covid virus will now show, totally unprepared for what has now come it's way. People will be out of their homes, jobs, work and luck. It has a military bigger than the rest seven combined, preaches the evils of socialism when not having a clue what socialism is and where and if it is practiced. (In the EU it's not, perhaps in Cuba?) And you ask why people are renouncing their citizenship? Ignorance is no excuse any more. Yes, the US is exceptional. Exceptionally bad. AND, I don't get some perverse sense of pleasure from writing all this. I am just trying to educate, however obnoxious that may be !

    Okay. Propaganda. If your a citizen of the U.S. Corporation than you are subject to Taxes, all Statutes, Codes, Regulations, Ordnances. If you are a Citizen of one of the several states of the united states of America than you are not. If you will look on your driver's license, your registration, your Birth Certificate, your, SS Card, you will find your mis-spelled name spelled in all CAPITAL letters. The U.S. Corporation, and it's Franchise, whatever state you live in has turned you into a Corporation to and as a Corporation you must follow The Corporate rules, Statutes Codes, Regulations, and Ordnances. Take out one of your Paper Cheques/checks. Used or unused. Now get your Magnifying glass and look at what you think is your Signature line. Now what do you see. My mom tried to convince my to stay here by saying that there are people fighting to make the country better but it’s not enough. She probably just doesn’t want me to be too far away. It's really only 5 Countries that speak English as their Native language: US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Everyone else uses it with their local tongues (ie: Tagalog and English for the Philippines. Kiro and English for Sierra Leone. Arabic and English for UAE etc.)
      So it's best to go with a language that is widely spoken in the US, such as Spanish. Latin isn't widely spoken. Sure it'll help you with some Spanish but Spanish would be better.

    However,what I can say is that is false...as long as you fill out the passport application correctly.
    You can still get a normal passport, without being a U.S citizen, as long as you are an American State National or an American State Citizen.
    A U.S. citizen and/or a citizen of the United States, or a U.S. national, is not the same thing as being an American State Citizen or an American State National.

    @Bob on The Atlantic article.
    www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/02/boris-Johnson-renounces-us-citizenship-tax-bill-mayor-london/385554/
    American tax law is incompatible with tax law in our adopted countries. For Americans abroad, US tax law restricts how we can invest for retirement on income that we earned entirely abroad, considers normal tax-free instruments in our adopted countries as foreign trusts, prevents us from saving for our children’s education, causes enormous everyday banking problems, and is so complex that it requires expensive cross-border tax experts that cost us thousands per year. It criminalizes us with penalties that are far in excess of what homeland Americans face. As a nation of immigrants, America was founded on the principle that those who came to the US seeking a better life should not have to pay taxes to the nations they left behind. Citizen-based taxation goes against the very foundations on which the Republic was formed. It is discriminatory, un-American and amoral. Sure, we can vote, but it is meaningless. France has elected members of its National Assembly that represent the interests of French citizens abroad. France values its expats more than America. This is shameful.
    Any US persons living overseas caught up in all this must visit the message boards of The Isaac Brock Society: isaacbrocksociety.ca/ and consider contributing to ADCS: www.adcs-adsc.ca/ and fatcalegalaction.com/

    If the people who leave the U.S. are honest, it's the taxes they have to pay while not living in the U.S. Yet, they still want the advantages that a United States citizenship and passport gives them, being the #1 country in the world. Some other country's passports are not accepted in just about every country in the world...but a United States passport is. Of the millions of people who live in the U.S.A., if only a maximum of around 3,000 a year decide they don't want the advantages of a U.S. passport, then that's OK. There are literally thousands of people every year who would do anything to be citizens of the United States, including crossing borders illegally. I wonder why? Maybe because it's a good place to be? If they are rich and they want to live in other countries, how did they get so rich in the 1st place? Using our U.S. free market system? I do agree that it would be a good idea if the U.S. would simplify it's taxes and paperwork required for its ex-pats, though; and it may be smart to lower them also.

      Do what every other country does and tax on residency and not citizenship. Only Eritreia has this rule besides the US. As far as the paperwork is conserned look up return free filing. This is how its done in Sweden for instance, where the IRS does the taxes for you, you only need to confirm it. So taxes here takes 5 minutes at most per year.

      @@markledesma3251 im sorry to hear that. I have a friend who was a US citizen in Africa and was rescued by the US military when there was a rebel uprising. Im sure every experience is different, but in general the US spends a lot of money protecting citizens abroad

      +Dee Cee If I remember what I've heard correctly, once you've renounced your US citizenship, it takes going through a _lot_ of hoops to regain it. Someone who has renounced her citizenship wouldn't just be able to say, "Oopsie, I changed my mind," at the first sign of trouble and become American again.

      I am not American, but any functional country will try to help their citizens living abroad.
