@@trublgrl No worries, I wasn't offended at all. 😁 I just enjoy the diversity in how even very young kids respond to stories. Mine can't even bear scary soundtracks or facial expressions showing fear.
And even though she knows stories and videos aren't real, they still evoke emotions in her as if they are real. So a murder mystery is still very very far away. And then other kids I know thrive on the most exciting scary stuff while laughing their heads off.
I was a very scared kid myself. So I wanted to help her in that regard without crossing any of her boundaries. So I've always watched 'scary' content with her, but in safe, non-scary settings.
Skeletons, ghosts, all the classic monsters, she knows them from halloween-related songs and cartoon specials, we draw them a lot, and very daringly, I watched Hotel Transylvania with her. She loved it.
Halloween is now her favourite month (in our house, one day is simply not enough), she loves all things jack 'o lantern, and feels such a deep and carefree connection to all these creatures.
But show her a relatively harmless chase scene in a kids' cartoon where someone looks scared and/or the music is hectic, and she refuses to keep watching.
So in summary: I mostly just wanted to share the dichotomy. Kids are wonderfully diverse in what's scary to them, and how they feel about being scared.

That's so weird because last night I was having a dream about a murder mystery. It was in a mansion and the crime was still going on as the detective and their dog companion (who was a basset hound dressed up like Sherlock Holmes) was investigating. The mansion was so big that the killer could easily hide and keep doing their thing and even attacked the police and the detective. The killer had also somehow brought in a pack of ferocious dogs, making the investigation more difficult. I woke up with so many cliff hangers. Does anyone else dream like this?

Very interesting, and well described! My eldest child is only 5, would it be appropriate to purchase a copy now, and use the next 3 years to establish a mystery for them to solve? At the end they could receive the copy of the book, and with their interest freshly piqued, one hopes they would be primed to appreciate the material.
