As soon as the motor cut out they should have deployed the anchor letting all the chain out they could and hopefully stop, the next thing (or first if no anchor) would be to put the sail up so at least they could control the yacht as they sailed out with the current.
If they were drifting close to the side of the Canal they should have had a line/ Rope to secure themselves to something rather than a boat hooks which is likely to pull your arm out or as in this case be too difficult to hold.
That current is the worst because the rich A Holes in Mantoloking keep closing up the inlet at the base of the bridge. After Sandy it should’ve been left open.
It’s not built for the tidal surge it has to handle
I would’ve raised at least one sail and tried to make way under control. I’ve got a 2.5HP Evinrude that’s just sufficient to propel my 15’ canoe.
Anchor 1st. Sort engine (fix, refuel etc..)
If no anchor, fenders out on both sides, wave to boats and have boathook ready to push off any dangers.
To deep and current to strong for anchor. If you watch his boat hook gets ripped out of his hands in the video
No good Samaritan boaters left around these parts. Everyone let him struggle and just kept driving around him
How could the other boats have helped them though?
@@tibor29 it's not hard to throw a line and tow him to safety. Even just back out the canal going with the current.
Not in New Jersey
There’s a thing called common sense.
