In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from Greta Van Fleet for the first time on the channel. I was really wowed by their throwback style of rock and roll...and how they've been able to also make it sound current. Highway Tune is their first song, and it went to #1 on the rock charts. So, that's where I'm starting. Come along for the ride!

They wrote this song when they were 14 yrs old. They listened to the blues growing up and really appreciate the history of music. They are all self taught on all thier instruments. Listen to more, you won’t be disappointed! I subscribed because I think you will listen to more!
They clearly listened to Zeppelin's The Rover. 😂
WHAT???? I was useless at 14 (maybe I am still)
Hey Doug, another great song from GVF is Heat Above🙂👍
and absolutely "tears of rain" too
Easily my favorite of theirs.
Heat Above is one of the best songs I have EVER heard in my life.
I have heat above on my spotify and I absolutely love it I couldn't sleep the other night as it was a song worm and I didn't care that I wasn't sleeping
@@mrsviking1808 lol...all there songs repeat in my head day and night!! it is pretty crazy
A few years ago I heard the first 15 seconds of Safari Song (please make that your next listen), paused it and went online and ordered their EP From the Fires. I then went back and listened to the rest of the song. Saw them live just prior to the covid lock down. Pure and simple rock and roll like we used to listen to in the 70's. A breath of fresh air in today's music.
The vocalist by this band has a very huge vocal range (A2-E6).
Many high notes he hits in live concerts.
His voice is another instrument in the band
@@sandifulmor8327 He plays the vocals
black smoke rising has to possibly be my favourite rock song of all time
Gotta ❤ #HeadbanginDoug !! 😂😂
Love him or hate him .. that boy can SAAAANG!
You ain't heard NOTHIN' yet, Doug!
🤘😎🤘
It's awesome they rock. Excellent voice! Thank you love your videos!
Try:
Broken bells
Meeting the master
Weight of dreams
The Archer
The falling sky
When the curtain falls
YOU WILL LOVE THEM
I had the ideal situation to hear this song for the first time: driving down a four-lane with the radio turned way up. My jaw dropped when those vocals kicked in; my initial Zeppelin album was the fourth, bought when it hit the shops. When Josh's voice wailed out it was the eeriest feeling of deja vu and joy.
As a classical composer, I bet you would really like any of the songs they did live in what they called the candlelight sessions. In particular, I'd recommend Broken Bells to start with.
Gotta a follow to hopefully see more GVF reactions. Love that you did your research on them. They are true artists ✨
Anything Greta Van Fleet Red Rocks Act 1, 2, 3, and encore on UA-cam is amazing. Especially Age of Man in Act 2!!
IReally fantastic review! It's refreshing to get some feedback that isn't just staring at the screen and gasping. I suggest their Age of Man performance from Red Rocks, as well as their song Heat Above! I'm excited to see your next reaction to them!
Agree!!
Oh man, wait til you listen to their albums. Seriously...Lover, Leaver, Taker, Believer...oof. Broken Bells, Heat Above, Meeting The Master....
Wait till you discover the Gretaverse.. and you realize that their songs are all tied together to create a whole universe. Wait till you discover that it's album oriented rock. That every song is a BANGER. And wait till you hear them on Starcatcher. Wait till you hear Josh belting out MTM or The Archer... vs what you just listened to. Their immense musical growth has been quite the journey. If you're blown away now, just wait. You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet! (Couldn't resist!)
Btw......Sept '23, they SOLD OUT MSG! And in July '24, they're playing the Royal Albert Hall. ❤️✌️& GVF
*PS: If you really want to have your socks knocked off.... watch the entirety of Red Rocks...... and, while you're watching/ listening, just remember they were kids.
First time I heard them,I thought it was a lost Led Zeppelin demo!🤘🤘🤘
When I heard them for the first time (Safari Song) I thought, "fantastic!, some new Zeppelin".
My roommate leaves his radio on low all the time and I kept hearing these guys thinking it was some lost Zep track they remastered and released until I Shazam'd it.
Sir! Prepared to be blown away!!! They are amazing !!! I'm obsessed with this band and their music!!!
Loved your take on this. Love Greta Van Fleet!!! Great music and absolutely amazing live!!! I highly recommend it. Just saw them last year at Madison Square Garden and it was outstanding 👍👌
I was at the gym first time I heard this and it was confusing because I was thinking “how is there a zeppelin song I’ve never heard “ got the album and really enjoyed it. “Edge of darkness “ should be next.
Wait until you hear their new works on Live from RCA Studio A - oh my.
Another couple of good ones to check out are Flower Power and from their latest album Meeting The Master. Both great songs and will show the growth of the band and how they have changed over time.
I think “Age of Machine” and “The Weight of Dreams”would make great reaction videos. Their 3rd album is a masterpiece
Age of Machine Live the Greta version and Weight of Dreams at Pinkpop are the best versions I can watch them every day ✨❤️🔥💥
I love GVF. They are fantastic in concert!
Light My Love!
Just a good hard rocking band, like the old days!
Southern California
LOVE LOVE LOVE this band! If you are about to go down the rabbit hole of GVF, i'm a new sub. Josh has a voice that soars! A song from Starcatcher, "Meeting the Master" really shows what a great singer he is. Four talented guys! Anything from The Candlelight Sessions is amazing. Great reaction Doug! ❤
I have been hearing ABOUT GVF for YEARS, and I just never took the opportunity to listen. My gym has been playing "Light My Love," a piano ballad. And Josh sings it well, but from the beginning he delivers this wail that is just ... beyond Plant-ian to me. I had to go to the monitor to see who the artist. Aha.... and from there I looked for "Highway Tune" and "Safari Song".
another great song from this album is Black Smoke Rising
A GVF song you would love is the archer from the album starcatcher. My personal favorite song of theirs!
"You're the one I Want" and "Meet the Master" are more ballad-ish. Boyee can saaang! So glad you got a listen in.
Love this! Make sure to listen to “Light My Love”
Thank you for such an awesome review! You did your homework 🙂
Glad you’ve found GvF😊 Please listen also Broken Bells or Heat above
Incredible sounding band. You've gotta listen to these next, in order... When The Curtain Falls, Black Smoke Rising, Safari Song, Heat Above. So many great sounding tunes. Age Of Machines is a cool one and Broken Bells has a clear Pink Floyd influence in the bridge. Very classic sounding band. Love it.
Please, as a fellow Michigander, more Greta reviews as they have a few albums behind them now!
Carrying the Traditional Rock sound torch to a new generation!
You will not be disapppointed by ANYTHING they put out. Their love of music and innate sense of what constitues a good song will blow you away. Natural musicians down to the tips of their toes, all 4 of them. And it doesnt hurt that as they grew, they were steeped in good old fashioned rock and roll, blues, and folk. They don't let anything go out half-finished or less than stellar. Also-they are even more fun to watch in their LIVE performances. Please do more Greta Van Fleet reaction videos! Please!
Heat Above, Broken Bells, Safari Song, Age of Machine and Weight of Dreams are all good choices. BTW, Robert Plant likes them, and Elton John suggested they wear stage costumes that reflect the groups of the 70’s, so you’ll notice a definite change in their style. And they are amazing live and have a fan base that ranges from teens to people in their 70’s.
Great reaction I love the way they sound so vintage
When I first heard about them I was prepared to dismiss them as the next derivative LZ type band. But when I started to really examine the music they have really got something special going on. Excellent musicians, a fantastic singer, great interesting songs and riffs. I'm 66, LZ are dead and gone, sure the music lives on and always will now.....but GVF are heading up classic rock for the younger generation. More power to them........
Same age, 100% agree. Like you I lived through Led Zep, although Deep Purple were my "go to" band then. I love GVF and in my view comparisons to Led Zep are spurious, they don't ASK to be compared they are here for the current generation rather than ours.
Another band that's tastefully tapped into the 70's is Canadian duo Crown Lands. Saw them live awhile back, so tight, so full for two people. A lot of Rush and Triumph coming through with them.
ua-cam.com/video/HraeHp8GmAg/v-deo.html
Just listened to Lady of the Lake and White Buffalo (two of their top tracks on Spotify), many thanks for this suggestion!
Essa banda é sensacional ❤ Josh é um vocalista incrível ❤
Oh man, you should see them live! 🫠 They will melt your face, SOO good!! 🔥 Gardens Gate is a fantastic masterpiece of an album. Their newest album is pretty solid, too. Enjoy listening to more Greta!! 🤍
The twins are only 19 in this video! They are a true classic rock band. Believe it or not, i think they sound even better in concert. SO much talent! You should definitely check out more. Josh’s voice is AMAZING!
Please, listen to their Candlelight Sessions songs & be blown away from their many talents! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Doug, you have to do Meeting the Master. A-mazing!
Gresties have been summoned! Enjoy going down rabbit hole! They are amazing!!
These gyys are excellent!! Watch more. This was their very first song as young teens! Try their When The Curtain Falls.
Saw them live as a warm up act for Guns and Roses in Denmark
Color me jealous! What a show!!
Doug. After you've heard more of their songs, Ì'd love to hear your take on the other members -- not just Josh, and on the progression of their compositions.
I love it. He never heard the song before, but seems to know the lyrics, the rhythm and the beat.
Please do th official video for "Heat above". It is a life changing experience!!
That is the type of song you get a speeding ticket when driving down the road.. great song.
Hello Doug, quick question: How far “under a rock” does a music professional have to hide in order to hear any given band’s music for the very first time about a decade after its release? You heard songs from Van Halen 1 for the first time about a week ago. How is that possible?
I recommend songs like Age of Machine, Meeting the Master and The Archer.
More GVF Dougie !!! Heat Above is a great next reaction video ...
Omg! One of my favorite Band ! You must listen to Sacred The Thread, Light my Love, or Age of man.. They are Beautiful songs. Far from Led zep to me. Sorry for my English. Love "je t'aime" Gvf❤
Hi from France Mister Doug🖐 Always nice to see you discovering new good things
Need to do meet the master live
Their last 2 albums I believe you would be gobsmacked by. They only keep getting better with each one. They’ve all expanded their musical abilities, including Josh, the singer…he’s worked really hard on his voice, and he has total breath control. Please do some of their newest ones, like Meeting the Master and The Falling Sky.
Yes, it sounds like classic rock….that’s why we love them!
Was at my local dive bar and slightly hammered on whiskey and playing some of the best pool of my life when I heard this song for the first time. Felt like I was in a movie!
thanks for a great tune from GVF
With names like Joshua, Jacob, Samuel, and Daniel, you'd think they were a gospel group!
Greg in TN 😀
GVF: A great, great band out of Frankenmuth, Michigan, my home state!
Hey Doug, great look at GVF, love them so much, glad you enjoyed your first run past them here
I would suggest Meeting The Master from their latest album.
Very different feel but in my opinion, an absolute masterpiece of a song.
Well worth a look
I don't care if they are derivative (It's not like Zep never stole anything...) - they are carrying the banner for great rock and I have loved all their albums.
Couldn't agree more
Zep took stuff, made it their own and a million times better than the source.
These guys don't do that.
@@lyndoncmp5751I love Zep. But there is a tendency with the hindsight to regard them as perfect. They made some dull tracks. Coda is full of them. And Zep were the pinnacle, whereas GvF are a jobbing band. The seventies were full of second string bands that still made great music. Nothing wrong with that in my book!
@@TC-mb2pw
Coda was a post split album full of outtakes that didn't make any album though. It was just a release to give people "something". Still, some nice stuff on there.
From the first album in 1969 to Physical Graffiti in 1975 they were as perfect as its possible for any band to be in my view.
Cheers. Best wishes.
They stole their number one hit from spirit.
They won the law. Suit Because they had more money.
Do yourself a favor a check out the song Black Smoke Rising. Absolutely fabulous.
Saw them open for Metallica at PNC Park Pittsburgh. Closed their set with this song.
You have to listen to Heat Above. his voice is crazy. He does this sort of yodeling in it!
Again: "The Rover" with "Dancing days" and "Whole lotta love".
be prepared to be blown away...their music is brilliant...Josh is brilliant.....check out Edge of Darkness as you make your way up the Ladder...I love the live version in Toronto!! so many more to come....they are the best out there right now💥💖✨❤️🔥
Waiting for rival sons
I am always curious why some tracks sound as though they were 40 years old, as though they were classics. This is one example, I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Darkness is another. Both are from the 21st century already!
You should check out their newest album, "Starcatcher", it's just amazing. I highly recommend "Fate of the Faithful" and "The Indigo Streak".
LOOK at Doug rocking hard!!!!!! 🤣🤘🤘🤘🎵🎶🎶
Love how your hair gets messier with the song 😅
LOVE GVF!!!
💯
they are sick live dude
Killer Live Band! No bad song so far.
hope you can eventually do Black Smoke Rising from Greta Van Flee such a good song with amazing vocals. I hear it's of there less Zeppelin sounding songs, but idk enough Zeppelin to say for sure.
Seconded!
Yes, that one does not sound like Zepp. It sounds more like a J mascis (dinosaur jr) riff meets a James Mercer(the shins) chorus. I haven’t heard a lot of Greta but I love that song.
I haven't heard a bad song from Greta yet, but Meet on the Ledge (the Fairport Convention cover you mentioned) would be a good one to do next. It's less Zep-sounding than most of their stuff, but yet still along the same lines and with a nice long guitar solo.
It was funny that the singer said he didn't consider Plant an influence. Robert Plant found that kind of humorous
Actually a lot of his influences were Aretha Franklin, Miriam Makena. Also mentioned was Joe Cocker. RP wasn’t one of them despite what you may think
@@sandifulmor8327 That’s what I said. I recall an interview with Robert Plant where Greta Van Fleet was brought up and Robert laughed that this kid said that.
@@sandifulmor8327 I think the point is that he is obviously lying, he sounds exactly like RP.
@metamon2704
He also does the same poses as Plant and is even wearing exactly the same trousers he used to wear in '69.
They sound a helluva lot more like Zebra than Zeppelin, tbh. Go listen to the "No Tellin' Lies" album.
I liked Meeting the master by them.
Suggest Weight of Dreams Stardust Chords
and Heat Above
Also go see them live
Please react to more Greta Van Fleet! I love this band and Josh is one of my all time favorite singers. I saw them live in my hometown Cleveland and they were soooo good. Here are some songs I’d like to see you react to
Heat Above
When The Curtain Falls
The Falling Sky
Age of Machine
candlelight sessions is a must or age of man from red rocks
you must react to some songs from their album Battle At Gardens Gate!! i suggest Heat Above, Built by Nations and My Way, Soon
Josh Kiskas voice is a combination of Robert Plant & Geddy Lee.
I don't think Highway is even in their top 10 best tracks 😁
I saw them live in London a couple of years ago and they're so good, the vocals are impeccable. My current favourite band.
The drummer is actually a guitar player. Shades of Dave Grohl, right? To be in the band he opted to play drums.
The more songs you listen to, the more you'll hear the resemblance to Zeppelin. (Not that there's anything wrong with that) But it's true, great music like this, especially from kids is great nowadays. My personal fav. is Anthem of the Peaceful Army, esp. The Cold Wind and When the Curtain Falls.
Have you done the weight of dreams? Or fate of the faithful anything gvf does is amazing ❤
Polacks from Frankenmuth!! I’m a Polack so I can say that. And Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth had THE BEST LAKE PERCH EVER!
i have no idea who this band is either but i love to play this song in the Fortnite music festival, especially on guitar!
Meet On The Ledge would be right proper.
It's an outstanding cover which shows them more for who they are rather than a Zep stand-in.
Think epic, triumphant Fairport Convention played with power-tools.
They have also done a cover of Adele’s-Rolling in Deep and my favorite David Bowie-Jean Jeanie.
The Damned by Plasmatics is a timeless banger
great video as always!
You gotta check out the band Rival Sons |m/
IT is satisfying. Want more? just rewind.. who says you can't listen to the same song 3 times.
Their later music is less LZ. They simply got famous and popular while still in the semi-covers phase...
They're not bad.
Age of Man at Red Rocks!
...this tune from GVF was incredibly derivative - still good - but I'm glad they moved on to show their true colours - here's The Rover - ua-cam.com/video/EH6I31ev1GM/v-deo.html
