In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from Greta Van Fleet for the first time on the channel. I was really wowed by their throwback style of rock and roll...and how they've been able to also make it sound current. Highway Tune is their first song, and it went to #1 on the rock charts. So, that's where I'm starting. Come along for the ride!

They wrote this song when they were 14 yrs old. They listened to the blues growing up and really appreciate the history of music. They are all self taught on all thier instruments. Listen to more, you won’t be disappointed! I subscribed because I think you will listen to more!

A few years ago I heard the first 15 seconds of Safari Song (please make that your next listen), paused it and went online and ordered their EP From the Fires. I then went back and listened to the rest of the song. Saw them live just prior to the covid lock down. Pure and simple rock and roll like we used to listen to in the 70's. A breath of fresh air in today's music.

I had the ideal situation to hear this song for the first time: driving down a four-lane with the radio turned way up. My jaw dropped when those vocals kicked in; my initial Zeppelin album was the fourth, bought when it hit the shops. When Josh's voice wailed out it was the eeriest feeling of deja vu and joy.

Wait till you discover the Gretaverse.. and you realize that their songs are all tied together to create a whole universe. Wait till you discover that it's album oriented rock. That every song is a BANGER. And wait till you hear them on Starcatcher. Wait till you hear Josh belting out MTM or The Archer... vs what you just listened to. Their immense musical growth has been quite the journey. If you're blown away now, just wait. You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet! (Couldn't resist!)
Btw......Sept '23, they SOLD OUT MSG! And in July '24, they're playing the Royal Albert Hall. ❤️✌️& GVF

You will not be disapppointed by ANYTHING they put out. Their love of music and innate sense of what constitues a good song will blow you away. Natural musicians down to the tips of their toes, all 4 of them. And it doesnt hurt that as they grew, they were steeped in good old fashioned rock and roll, blues, and folk. Heat Above, Broken Bells, Safari Song, Age of Machine and Weight of Dreams are all good choices. BTW, Robert Plant likes them, and Elton John suggested they wear stage costumes that reflect the groups of the 70’s, so you’ll notice a definite change in their style. And they are amazing live and have a fan base that ranges from teens to people in their 70’s.

This! I listened to From The Fires when it first came out and thought, "well, that was good, but nothing especially amazing", and didn't really listen much after that first try. Fast forward 6 years, Starcatcher comes out and my friends are raving about it, so I decide to give GVF another chance and listened to Starcatcher... and it was maybe my favorite album of the year. The way their sound has evolved and grown and improved really impressed me, so I went back and started listening to some of the rest of their stuff and I really liked The Battle at Garden's Gate as well, and find myself appreciating their initial albums more too as time goes on.
But yeah, Starcatcher is incredible. So many great tracks. Really excited to see what they come up with next!

When I first heard about them I was prepared to dismiss them as the next derivative LZ type band. But when I started to really examine the music they have really got something special going on. Excellent musicians, a fantastic singer, great interesting songs and riffs. I'm 66, LZ are dead and gone, sure the music lives on and always will now.....but GVF are heading up classic rock for the younger generation. More power to them........

I have been hearing ABOUT GVF for YEARS, and I just never took the opportunity to listen. My gym has been playing "Light My Love," a piano ballad. And Josh sings it well, but from the beginning he delivers this wail that is just ... beyond Plant-ian to me. I had to go to the monitor to see who the artist. Aha.... and from there I looked for "Highway Tune" and "Safari Song".

Please react to more Greta Van Fleet! I love this band and Josh is one of my all time favorite singers. I saw them live in my hometown Cleveland and they were soooo good. Here are some songs I’d like to see you react to
    Heat Above
    When The Curtain Falls
    The Falling Sky
    Age of Machine

Greta Van Fleet is the future of rock if you ask me, a lot of people "hate" them just because they kinda sound like Led Zeppelin, but I think that is the magic in them, you should listen to Heat Above, Broken Bells or The Weight of Dreams, I recommend you The Wight of Dreams because it is an amazing experience 😊

Followed you because I love new reactions to my favorite band! They still play Highway Tune at their live shows, even after all these years, but you really gotta break into some of their other music now, cause you’re missing out on so much! If you wanna start with their earlier stuff, try Black Smoke Rising or Edge of Darkness on “From the Fires,” Lover Leaver Taker Believer or Brave New World on “Anthem of the Peaceful Army,” Built by Nations or Caravel on “Battle at Garden’s Gate” and Falling Sky or The Archer on “Starcatcher.” Those are mostly rockers, but there are plenty of masterpieces on their two latest albums too. I hope you decide to dig in and explore Greta a little bit more.

I am always curious why some tracks sound as though they were 40 years old, as though they were classics. This is one example, I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Darkness is another. Both are from the 21st century already!

The guitar reminds me a lot of ZZTop, the voice more AC/DC. It is nicely simplistic and straight forward. I also thought like Doug: wait waht, why does it stop here?
Cool old school rock. Love it!

I haven't heard a bad song from Greta yet, but Meet on the Ledge (the Fairport Convention cover you mentioned) would be a good one to do next. It's less Zep-sounding than most of their stuff, but yet still along the same lines and with a nice long guitar solo.

Yes, that one does not sound like Zepp. It sounds more like a J mascis (dinosaur jr) riff meets a James Mercer(the shins) chorus. I haven’t heard a lot of Greta but I love that song.

It was funny that the singer said he didn't consider Plant an influence. Robert Plant found that kind of humorous

Actually a lot of his influences were Aretha Franklin, Miriam Makena. Also mentioned was Joe Cocker. RP wasn’t one of them despite what you may think
