This Hikaru game made me think about what Naroditzki said about playing against him, that it was frustrating because every beautiful line that you think it's winning you realize that at the end of the line there is a perfectly placed piece that makes it useless. And it's exactly like that, Alireza thought for an hour and a half for that endgame but every single idea is useless because of insanely perfectly placed pieces

I don't know, feels like he played a ton of prep, had a massive time advantage and couldn't convert. Hikaru is only the third or fourth best player in the tournament. It feels like Alireza isn't there yet. How many prep bombs does he have left? This one was expertly handled.

There may be a lot of young and upcoming sharks like Alireza but make no mistake it is still not easy to take down them old guards that are still here. Even if Hikaru is the oldest in this field, and does not actively gets to play in major tournaments, but do not count him out because he can punish you in a snap.

It blew my mind how Hikaru defended that position today. It seemed like any random move that was made, and during the live stream they made a ton, the evaluation swung widely in one direction or another. Hikaru way down on time seemed to have seen ALL of it and after AF took an hour and a half looking at the position Hikaru sat down and drew it effortlessly. These men play on a level that in the deepest recesses of my mind I can not imagine. It's beautiful to see them play at this level. And I'm not just referring to this particular game.

Good point brought up by Levi about backrank checkmates. I can say from experience when i started playing chess 9 years ago i would get backspanked so often, at some point the tactic just became engrained in my brain. I am now 2200 blitz on the site that must not be mentioned and as soon as i sense a backrank threat coming i will automatically make luft or free up space for the king. I might lose in some other spectacular fashion, but i wont get backrank mated. These guys are so many levels above, they see those basic threats in a split second. With 2 hours on the clock there is absolutely no way that's ever gonna happen.
