I just finished hanging my first exterior salvage door. Came out pretty good! I appreciate your thoroughness. Usually videos leave me with a lot of questions, but yours answered all of them. Thank you!
This was great! I have had doors that wont even latch when closed due to the frame not being square. When I took off the molding I found there were NO shims at all, just 4 screws above the top hinge. After watching your video I Took everything out and rehung the door correctly. Now it shuts perfect! I fear I will need to do this to all my doors in my house. I dislike lazy tradesmen! Thankyou for your video. One thing, you did not show how to adjust the gap on the hinge side. I will check to see if you have any other videos to show this. Thanks again!
You're welcome. I had to do this to all my doors in my house. The hinges, if installed correctly, should set the gap or margin on the hinge side. You may need to adjust the margins in between the top and middle hinge or the middle hinge to the bottom and you can do that the same way as the strike side. Now you have given me an idea for another video! Thank you!
This is great info. Couple questions, how much reveal do you prefer when you add your casing, 1/8" or 1/4"? Also, do you ever use head screws to hang doors and if not why? Thanks!
I always use 1/4 inch. you can go a little smaller however when you install the hardware the strike plate will hit the casing and may not seat correctly with a smaller reveal. Not sure what you mean by head screws. When I install a door I don't shim or put any fasteners into the head unless it is a double door and that would be in the center. I only shim on the strike and hinge side. I may use a screw in the top hinge on a hollow core door if it sags and i need to pull the door back. I will always use a screw in the top hinge on a solid core door because of the weight. I hope I answered your question. Thank You!
I thought i was doing a good job installing a pre hung until i installed the door knob and it wasn't lined up with the hole. Took it all apart again shut the door with the door knob did 1 screw at a time, shut the door, did another screw and then it all worked out, except the top corner isn't sealed perfectly like i'd wish but whatever gf is happy. Sort of a pain but worth it once it's done.
I'm absolutely kicking myself right now....I can't seem to get the door Installing level, plum or the reveal even. I'm hoping I can use ur methods. One of the problems I'm having is when I go to stick in the middle or bottom shims, the top shims fall out. Shoot I put a nail in the top shims to hold the door in place?
Yes. You should kinda know where you want to put shims before you start hanging the door. You can set the door in the opening and throw a level on the head of the door. See how much you will have to lift one side of the door if any. Just use one nail first then add shims where you need them. I hope this helps. Its difficult to explain without my props!
Being perfectly plumb isn't the most important. Making sure the measurement to the side of the wall is more important. If the framing is out of plumb it shouldn't be more than an 1/8 or 1/4. If it is more than that, then you should split both ways. a little out of plumb and the space between the jamb and adjacent wall. If you plumb your door perfectly and the wall next to it is out of plumb it will be very noticeable unless the door is more than 6 inches away from another wall. Don't get to wrapped up in perfectly plumb. Another thing to consider is the ceiling above the door. Is it level or not. Visibility is more important. Sometimes being a good carpenter is how to hide another carpenters mistake. Years ago I was applying for a job with a very good high end home builder. During the interview they asked me can you hang a door without a level? The answer is yes! all you need is a tape measure. Make sure the jamb measures equally from the wall at the top and bottom. Everything else works from there.
Your screws or nails that you have to nail/screw through the door frame should be going into a framing 2 by 4 and that's what holds the frame in place. If it is slightly loose fit then you need someone to hold it until you shim it more snug. It shouldn't be super loose if its a couple inches off then you maybe have the wrong size pre hung door. Usually 30" by 80" is smaller size then 32" by 80" , and 36" width and so on.
You can't beat experienced workmen. Many thanks.

Should’ve known that by looking at striker holes
Thanks good video you explained well
Thank you! I appreciate that!

Installing a door is a legit skill!
If I don't have a nail gun, can I use screws instead to secure the shims?
You can, but you will have big holes to fill. I would use 8 penny nails or hardened trim nails.
This is assuming your studs are perfectly plumb. I’m struggling with how to get jams perfectly plumb and dealing with imperfect framing

Epic vid thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
i dont understand whats holding the whole door frame in place from the beginning. everytime i open the door it all falls out

Did you nail or screw the jamb in? 😂
One or the other will keep it from falling out.
@@neomacchio4692 lmao, i didnt realize the frame get screwed into the studs. Dumbass moment on my end. first timer
