Charlie wants to know so badly why he keeps picking up and setting down the pot without throwing it out. The simple answer is even though he's currently cleaning, for the last 12 years the only thing he's ever done with anything is "just set it down". It's impulse. He probably doesn't even recognize the ridiculousness of it lol. He's just putting it back in its home for now.

As someone who's dealt with messes like this before, to answer your question about "he lives in this, how is it bad NOW?"
To put it simply, it's been covered and undisturbed. "Disturbing" the mess by moving things to clean it up, the smells waft more than they did when they were just sitting idly by. It's like why your litter box may not always smell disgusting until you go to scoop it: the smells get much worse by disturbing the mess.

I clean houses for a living and the worst I've seen were definitely coming from people with depression. They're also the houses where I put the most effort into because I sympathize and I know What it is like. I had one guy almost cry when he saw all the junk cleaned out after he came back from work. Took me a good 6 hours. It's those kind of reactions that make cleaning literal shit worth it. Often just living in a cleaner environment makes you feel better.

If you ever want to know why somebody would choose/want to live like that, here's my explanation:
When I was deepest into my depression. My room looked similar to this, and it was my own personal hell. I hated living like that, and hated myself for getting it to that point. I was so lucky to have a friend who did similar things to his own. While I knew it was disgusting and they were repulsed by it, they instead encouraged me and even helped me get to deep cleaning. I scrubbed the carpet for hours with them, and eventually we got it to a far better state. I slipped into depression like that a couple times and each time they showed me the humanity and grace that I deserved. After getting a lot of help mentally, I managed to keep my space cleaner than it's ever been. I'm glad he's been shown that same humanity from his own friend, and I really hope things improve.
Nobody wants to live like this. For me it was depression. For somebody else it can be ADHD, or trauma, or disabilities.

I spent three years in filth because the thought of even picking a single piece of trash up was so overwhelming to my psyche... I wish I could say that there was some big event like me getting pneumonia and almost dying or some thing that just took the weight off but nah. I just got up one day and started cleaning, and it took me two weeks but I did it. Once it was gone THEN I had the weight off me and got my shit together retook my MCAT re-applied and got into the best medical school in the country. A few years ago I had an awful depression episode that lasted several months. In that time, I did not shower, clean my room, brush my teeth, and barely changed my clothes. Looking back I must have stunk but at the time I didn't realize how bad I was. I just remember embarrassment and shame. I was so ashamed of how dirty the room was that I just didn't look at it, I couldn't deal with it, so all I did was lay in bed ignoring it. My hair was so tangled and greasy that I couldn't run a brush through it, so I just put it into a bun and ignored it. One day I bought detangler at the store (at this point I was considering cutting my hair it was so matted), and I spent hours going at it on my bedroom floor. Finally I was able to brush through it with no issue, and I took a shower. I just felt a sense of relief that I hadn't felt in months and it motivated to clean my room. It was several bags worth of trash; junk food, pizza boxes, empty alcohol bottles, you name it.
I have no idea how it got that bad. I have no concept of the time inbetween. It's like I just woke up and it was like that. People love to talk about mental health awareness and depression but they don't talk about THESE symptoms. Depression isn't pretty, it's not aesthetic gifs and occasional sadness. It's dirty, grimy, moldy, shameful. I feel bad for this guy because I've been where he is. I hope he gets therapy and addressee his issues

I felt so heartbroken seeing it had gone back to being so filthy after all that. Maybe he did it for views, but having been where you were at with depression demotivation myself, he may have not addressed the underlying issues yet. In 2013-2015, I had hundreds of liquor bottles, orange juice bottles, and cigarette packs piled on my bedroom floor, I was getting hurt walking through it during week long benders(falling and breaking furniture several times). Also experienced not doing anything with hygiene at that low point. I was wearing hats to work, piling on deodorant, and just buying new clothes at the $0.99 store instead of washing clothes and showering. Looking back, I feel the shame and embarrassment you mentioned. Coworkers would pull me aside and talk about smelling and the ugly clothes being worn. Same socks for a week at times.
Sought psychiatric help and overcame drinking, then subsequently slowly overcame depression in 2017/2018. Now I'm OCD and don't even want more than one single water bottle on the bedside table. Kind of glad I experienced hitting rock bottom, because it showed me how easily this stuff can hit. It is strange how many people take for granted, "just clean it". Wish they knew, for people who've basically given up, that doesn't mean anything.
Glad you found your way out of it relatively quickly. Sometimes a small catalyst can help motivate, and then a little bigger accomplishment, then more, and so on.

wow you managed to detangle your hair knots without losing a ton of it? i had long hair so entangled that i had to literally rip off a lot of it, it was slowly turning into dreadlocks... i quit having long hair lol, less trouble
but i'm still kinda there tho, not at this level but eh... still struggling against depression and alcoholism... sometimes i get a bit of motivation, but it's cyclic, i kinda always relapse pretty quick, so my motivation periods are just long enough so i don't get to the point of actual tons of trash in my room, and don't smell toooo bad... i kinda feel like i'm taking 2 steps forwards then one step backwards, then repeat, kind of... sometimes more than one step backward lol but i feel a sloooow overrall progress... at least about my alcoholism, which is better than it used to be, even tho it's still crippling, not sure about my depression... guess it's a bit better too.. anyway the more time passes the more reasons i have to get my shit together and force myself to change my life...
good luck to anyone going through the same kind of thing if you read me, and congrats to you guys for having won against it, you rock ;)
(ik my english isn't perfect, it's not my native language, so don't mind it if something is formulated oddly)
if anyone in depression reads me, know you're not alone, and please try to take care of you, getting things and yourself clean even if you don't feel like it helps, exercising too, eating good food too... easier said than done, trust me i know, i really know... but if you don't do it, you'll stay there forever, so you have to FORCE yourself, you can do it, and don't be ashamed to seek help, medical or from friends (if you have some, i don't really) or family (hopefully you have some of that, and even if you hold grudges, forgiveness is important (again, easier said than done, i'm giving advices i have a hard time applying myself lol) and your parents, siblings etc will ALWAYS have some love for you whatever happened... i wish everybody the best, i know it's hard, and the state of the world doesn't help at all, but hey let's look at the bright side, the more crap is the world, the more people are depressed, the less you are alone in this shit... weird way to look at it i know, and knowing other people suffer doesn't make me happier at all, but when the pandemic started for example, it almost didn't change anything in my life, but i felt like finally people would get to experience a tiny bit of what i was feeling and living... lockdown is pretty much my everyday life even if i do go out sometimes, mostly to supermarket, and when i was still smoking, to see my dealer, and that's pretty much it back then, now i try to go for walks, which helps too... sorry for that messy comment, and for giving advice you prob already know too, knowing what to do is something, having the strenght to do it is something else... wish everybody to find the strenght, and good luck
edit : oh and it's weird but forcing yourself to smile sometimes actually tricks your brain into liberating happiness hormones... feeling depressed is mostly an hormonal thing, whatever the origin story is, so exercising, good food and these things actually have a chance to help, and ofc try to make friends with good people, like join a sport club, or even something not sporty if you'd rather exercise without people seeing you, like a chess club etc.. but don't stay alone, even if you feel like you're fine with loneliness... i felt like i was for a long time, and i am most of the time... but there was some denial about that.. you can get through this shit guys.

I think the "choking" is explained pretty simply. If there is enough relatively inert trash on top (cardboard, plastic packaging etc.) all that helps keep smells contained. When you start digging in it to remove the trash and clean up is when the real concentrated smells get released that were contained in the compacted trash, things like mold spores are also likely trapped in there, when you start moving stuff, jostling it a lot of spores, dust etc get released. (which can be an acute health hazard, pro's don't clean out hoarder trash situations like this without proper masks etc.)

Seriously man, that room is a real deal biohazard, holy crap. You need full body PPE, protect every mucous/wet membrane on your face, cover your hair, ears, carry nothing out with you anywhere on your body. I wouldn't even have exposed boots. Can't have anything alive or otherwise getting in. And they would have to be discarded if exposed. Nearly everything making contact in there from outside will have to be trashed. That mattress has to go. Hard, non porous things need to be sterilized, including the electronics with fans that circulate. Doesn't take a pro to see there's a lot in there you can't be taking home with you in any capacity. It's a goddamned hotbed of illness and disease. I'm no clean freak. I leave food out for days on occasion, but this is straight up dangerous. Just beyond unhealthy as an environment. The air quality has to be terrible, and I'm not even factoring in smell. The oxygen levels have to suck in there after a few hours with the door closed, and that's just baseline. Home HVAC can't fix that. Particles and other gasses are a whole nother matter. So many possible toxins and pathogens looming. There's no way there isn't a significant health impact, it's just that you may never know exactly what got you when some random health problem strikes. All the doctor can do then is try to piece together potential hazards, document/treat symptoms, and try to reverse-engineer what may have happened to you. That can be a deadly serious situation to be in, too.
TBH, I think the REAL work in that room actually starts after everything comes out and you begin to assess the walls, floors, and ceilings. How about your ducting? Might as well plan for a fairly significant remodel at that point. The room is just so fucked. It's like if you shit in a tupperware container and let it fester with the lid on for years in total darkness. The container is fucking forfeit - there's no cleaning it or restoring it. It's not like you just scrape/dump it out and everything is fine. It is forever changed by that lmao. That's every fucking surface in that room. What are you gonna do? Build a hermetic chemical sterilization chamber around it and clean it with level 4 hazardous gasses, industrial style? Hazardous microbes are gonna be everywhere, hiding in microscopic imperfections. Some things can't just be cleaned out of drywall, framing, and insulation. Don't even get me started on molds/lichens.

I am currently in this situation. I lost my job, and my girlfriend broke up with me just a few weeks after. It doesn't help I lost my job partly because of her coming back into my life. We had broke up years prior, but then out of nowhere at the beginning of the year she got ahold of me out of nowhere apologizing and begging to be friends and work things out. Honestly, I never got over losing her in the first place so I was obviously more than happy to have her back in my life. I lost my job a few months later because my boss hated I wanted to spend more time with her then him in my personal life. Long story, it's dumb but basically lost my job over a personal life disagreement. And then weeks later, she shuts down and pushes me away again. This time she didn't block me, she just slowly shutdown and stopped responding. I don't get to know how she's doing anymore, again... I fucking lost my job and everything because she came back into my life... A years old wound reopened x1000. I fucking wanna die. I live with my parents and that's going to shit too. I don't care about living, I don't care about anything anymore. I have lost everything. I don't want to fucking live anymore.

      1. He has great memory, and people with good memory tend to be nostalgic, and often won't throw stuff due to the sentimental values of each items.
      2. He may be depressed in the inside, depressed people's rooms tend to be messy as they mostly care less about their surroundings.
      3. He cleaned his room, but then possibly it felt more painful than it was relieving due to the 1st possible explanation.

I grew up with a friend like this and he still has his room filled to this day. Too be fair his room is probably half as bad as this, but I guess people just get used to living like that. I feel like mental health and depression plays a big part of people that live like this. Even if someone slowly recovers from depression, they can struggle very much with bad habits like hording, and being too lazy to clean. It's unfortunate that it can get to this level or much worse. To anyone else struggling with stuff like this, stay strong and take it one day at a time. Maybe keep trash bags in a obvious spot in your room and try to clean a little bit once a day to build better habits.

Bedbugs are caused by bringing home a pregnant female bedbug, or a male and female bedbug. They don’t just spawn on messes. Nature doesn’t work like that lol.
It’s kind of rare to bring this combo home, particularly because bedbugs will avoid any living, *MOVING* thing. So most bedbugs are brought home after a women’s purse or a piece of luggage has sat idle in an infested environment for a good while.

I was super deep into alcoholism from the time I turned 21 to literally just about 2 months ago (I'm almost 25) and I've always struggled with major anxiety and depression issues, as embarassing as it is to say it this was basically my room, just with empty (and sometimes not even half empty) bottles and cans, not as much food but still decent amount of rotting material. A decent 3 year period of just nothing but self loathing and just genuinely not caring if I lived or died meant I didn't really give a fuck about cleaning. I thought what was the point? Deep down the room itself was a major source of embarrassment and in turn loneliness. When I quit drinking I started feeling better and finally became uncomfortable in my surroundings. I'll admit its taking me some time, currently maybe a little less than half is actually clean and presentable (I have a huge room), but I'm slowly but surely slaying these demons. It was really fucking hard for me to watch this video and write this comment, but I'm so tired of feeling so alone with this struggle. Thank you so much Charlie for just posting this video. As someone who has had serious bouts of mental illness episodes, I can explain how a room gets like this. Part of it is low self esteem. People with low self esteem often believe they do not deserve nice things. Part of the reason the mess will stay is that the person living in the filth will believe that they deserve to live in a filthy home because they are often convinced they're a terrible person.
Another reason it could accumulate legitimate issues with executive function. I have ADHD and beginning to clean is something that I have trouble with remembering even on a basic level. Until someone tell me, I will often even step over trash without the idea of cleaning but occuring to me.

@@jfizzle1688 For me, structure has helped immensely. I cannot do online classes. Not because I can't do the material myself, but because there's no structure to keep me focused. Maybe suggest that they keep either a physical or online schedule/calendar, whatever they're more likely to follow. They can schedule literally everything they struggle to do routinely. Speaking of routine, sticking to a daily routine helps too. Waking up at the same time every day, planning out meals, planning workouts, etc. Proper sleep, diet and exercise all contribute to better mood and energy as well. About the in-person classes, I think there's another element to that I should mention: accountability. Just the fact that there's a group of people I see and talk to every day makes me want to take better care of myself. However, it's entirely possible that they should seek professional help. Hard to say without knowing the person and what they're personally struggling with.
