I just had to take a moment to come back to this video. This video kickstarted everything for me! Something about this design lit off a little spark in my head, and I still remember staying up far later than I should have designing my own take on this setup. I never actually built it, but the problem solving and design process really unlocked a whole new way of thinking for me. I was working an awful, low-paying job, living in a tiny 400 sq. ft. studio apartment in a rough part of town. This video made me save up and buy my first power tools since I had been homeless four years prior. Nothing fancy, just a little cordless Ryobi circular saw and an impact driver and drill, with some cheap bits. I still have them and use them 5+ years later! I'm now comfortably situated into my own home, and while renovations are happening slowly, they're happening, chipping away at projects here and there every weekend! I frequently find myself outside my comfort zone in terms of design and execution, and while it can be frustrating, it's also incredibly rewarding as I learn and develop new skills. So, I just wanted to say, THANK YOU! You opened an avenue of my life that I never even knew was there. With this one video, you completely changed the course of my life, starting me down a path of developing skills that led to being in a place I never even imagined I could be. Thank you for sharing this facet of your life. It means more to me than you could ever know!
I've only watched 1min 20secs of this an i keep repeating "Well done!" out loud! Think I've said it 50 times already. And I cant stop! This is absolutely beautiful man! ...Well done!!! Thanks Michael! Not quite your level of craftsmenship, but I'm pretty happy with the results of my "hackmenship" :) The shaper was great for inlaid LEDs, made it super easy to get a precise fit.

Wooooooooow!!! This video is a great example on how you may encounter problems with projects but you always have to find a way around them. Great job, i'll take some ideas from this
Lots to learn from this especially when you new to wood work. The fact that this took 7 months at least allows us newbies go gage how long a big project could typically take when working alone. Really appreciate the work put in here and the lessons learned. Well done, it looks awesome
It looks great, but I have a concern. I'm not sure I would trust nail gun nails to hold that slab to the french cleats. I can't tell how heavy the slab is, but screws are surely the safer option. I wouldn't want something as heavy as that falling on my head in the middle of the night.
Agreed screws are the absolute safest way to go...however, it's a thin slab and the direction of force perpendicular to the nails means that the force on the nails, in the direction pulling them out of the wood, is minimal....there are a lot in there, and the chances of them all failing at once with no previous warning sign is next to none. That said, I probably will go back with a few screws at some point, because it is relatively easy to do.
Would love to do something like this, my choices of materials (and thus design) would be a bit different. Steel, brushed aluminum, glass, and carbon fiber. I'm absolute arse at woodworking, but metal and I get along well enough and I'm learning to lay carbon...and I just like glass. Of course, if I were to take the plunge, mine would cost a LOT more than yours...aaannnd take longer. Maybe not...but your video is certainly inspirational!
