I've heard the "start small" thing so much. But you made a much better point that I never considered! Mistakes/biting off more than I can chew are where I've learned the most as well. This is solid advice!
One of my favorite pieces of advice on any creative endeavors is, "Finished is better than perfect." Obviously push yourself to make something good, but eventually you get too caught up in adding unnecessary touches, rather than releasing a game and moving on. It's how you end up like the story in the video - working on something for 15 years and people still don't see it the way you do as the dev. There comes a time to release and move on to bigger and better.

Glad that you are back! Your tutorial on Game Maker Language helped a lot years ago.

I came from the FF14 video with the disabled comments and I want to say I feel for you. FF14 is filled with self-centered and extremely sensitive people with paper thin skin. A lot of people say the game has a toxic positivity problem and to me it's more than that. The game has a huge group think problem. There is only one way of doing anything in the game. One way to tank, one way to heal, one way to dps, one way to rp, chat and people will even give your grief over your housing décor and name. If you dissent, even a little they'll dog pile you and report you without hesitation. You play exactly like them and be left leaning or else.
I don't share any politics in a video game on my character because I play a game like this to escape that sort of talk. It's abysmal how they treat those they see as a threat or an outsider. I've seen over 10 witch hunts when I was in a terrible FC during covid. They hunted down people with large groups and "got rid" of them, some for just playing male au'ra! Sorry about the long comment, I was feeling this same kind of frustration that led me to quitting. I never got banned myself because I was good at blending in but I feel bad for a lot of people who did get harassed.

This sort of over scoped idea thing happens in nearly all creative areas, but I do notice that people in the game dev can be quite mean about crushing a passionate creators dreams. I find it's better to redirect new people into information that will lead them to their own conclusions about why their super large project may not be a possibility, or have them start on small projects that would work with the large project so they can see just how much work they are looking to dive into.
