I’ve had such a strong distaste towards Muslims ever since the wars and 9/11… I feel so stupid for buying into the bull crap I saw online and in the news, this story has done more for me than anyone will ever understand .
There is a beautiful surah in the Qur'an its says ""O you who believe! If a sinner comes to you with any news, investigate, lest you harm some people out of ignorance, and you become regretful for what you have done."" Surah al-Hujurat The media is a double-edged sword. We have to ask and research before launching any reactions. The media directs others to false stories.
WHOA!!!! This was in my city and just think… my doctor, Dr. Bahrami, could have been harmed if he didn’t show kindness to Mac. This is heavy! Great film!!!
Very powerful story and journey! I hate how our US military just lets these Veterans go without proper mental health help to be sure they are okay to go back into civilian life without debilitating PTSD, trauma is invisible but we know the military is more likely than not to experience it. So we should 100% help support them all the time but especially when leaving active duty!
I truly believe once you see combat in the military it should be mandatory to have some form of counseling afterwards. Maybe 3 months, or more if you want it. You don't even have to call it therapy- call it debriefing. Sitting face to face with another human to help ease the burden of what you experienced could save the life of that soldier and help the family they return to. No stigma if ALL have to go. There is a wonderful doc the military made in 1946 that shows the help soldiers received post WW2. Famed Hollywood director John Huston, a vet himself, made the film for the army. The army saw it as controversial- and blocked its release until the 1980s. The methods of treatment in the film are outdated- but what is never outdated is the compassion and care shown to these once broken men. Your heart will break. "Let There Be Light" lots of places to watch, UA-cam, Prime Video, etc. Amazing film.
Even better would be not to set people up for trauma in the first place by training them to see other human beings as something other than human in order to make it easier to kill.
Same in the UK. We the working class are nothing but disposable cattle bred for our labour in whatever form, be it military cannon fodder or starvation wage slavery in civilian life.
Such a powerful story. This is something that should be shown in schools to provide students the opportunity to confront hatred and prejudice that is so common in our soiciety.

I live in London, Ontario where a Muslim family was run down and murdered nearly 2 years ago. I have experienced a lot of Islamophobia and am sadly not alone. But there is so much beauty and hope and humanity out there. Thank you for this wonderful film and story. Wishing you all the best Mac and to the whole Muncie community ❤️
I live right down the road in Stratford Ontario and was absolutely horrified when that poor family was run down. During a BLM event, I was involved in a near hit when a driver was angry about being held up while our group crossed an intersection. I’ll never forget the hate in his eyes. It changed me, made me fearful. I’m sorry for the hate you have experienced. You have a friend in me.
I could not love this more. Everybody has a story. Remember when Steve Hartman started by going to a phone booth, picking up the phone book that hung on a chain, picked out a name & he went & talked to that person. Every story was amazing. We're all in this world together, all just trying our best.
"Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise." - Quran 4:56 yeah.. sooooooo loving
The version of God that's in the Bible and/or the Torah is hardly what you'd call entirely peaceful, no? Come to all religions with questions. I know people of faith who do not subscribe to religions in order to believe in their deity. Perhaps that is in the future for most people but meanwhile, for many, religions provide community that would not be there otherwise, and in this case, that was a good thing, yes? Surely you can agree with that?
@@caithurley5589 "God that's in the Bible and/or Torah" Ok.. pick one. Torah = Judaism. Gospels = Christianity, and I'd say he was entirely peaceful in the Gospels
Pretty amazing story. I am not muslim, and really had very little knowledge or interaction until I visited a family member who had temporarily moved to Oman to teach. We toured around, and one of the most profound things was how we could enter a mosque (really as sightseeing, which in hindsight seems ignorant, how would most christians feel about ‘sightseeing non-christians entering a church’), and how open and welcoming they were. It blew my mind. When you met a stranger, they would invite you to their house for tea or a meal. So hearing how he was welcomed… wasn’t actually as shocking. So happy to have come across this.
Churches are just as welcoming to tourists and visitors in my experience. Christianity encourages proselytizing so almost every church welcomes the curious to enter.
@Colette92017 Ya but define "churches"... the priest and ministry, maybe. But I can assure you, based on firsthand experience, general public/practitioners are and would NOT be welcoming to non-christians coming into a church to 'sightsee', which was exactly what many others and I were doing in a mosque. Saying otherwise isn't reality, unfortunately. It would be met with suspicion, and either implicit or outright explicit negativity. Period.
Beautifully done. Living in Muncie, I remember when this happened, but never did I hear the story conveyed in such a way, definitely something everyone should see.

I was not ready for what was presented here. The sheer magnitude of the impact this story has is nothing short of life changing. There are almost endless "what ifs" that could have wiped out everyone telling this story, but somehow love founds its way into the story and all the wrong doors closed, leaving only the doors open that lead to understanding and compassion. It took a series of miracles to allow this pathway to unfold. This needs to be put into the mainstream so that it can reach all that need to hear it!
Such a moving, powerful story of how love and kindness ultimately conquers hate and violence. A proof of the humanity that resides in each and everyone, without exception, as human beings. We are made to love, to be kind, and forgiving.
'To save one human is like saving the whole humanity'. We all have people around us that need help. Let's help and do our bit. May we all find peace in our lives and this world

Thank you for speaking with such clarity and honesty. The journey has been hard but my goodness me, this man has reached levels of I guess what you could call 'enlightenment' that many people never reach. Allowing a closed and broken heart to be healed by open hearted humanity and love was an act of incredible personal bravery. It takes guts to face who you are. Real guts, and as a role model, in that community, and to your daughter: Wow, job done! Fantastic documentary. Thank you for making it freely available. Here's hoping every teenager in the US is shown it at school for the next 100 years.
This is a story about communication....prior to his visit to the Islamic Center, Mac had simply never communicated with any Muslims. After his visit, the channels of communication were open, and understanding followed. This is why we should never cut off the lines of communication. Once a dialogue is opened, we move forward towards peace. Thanks for this, Malala. Hope this film wins an Oscar.
Man this is super emotional. I'm proud to be a Christian, but since I was a teenager when 9/11 happened I had some of the same hatred when I was young. Not happy, but it was the truth and I was so wrong. My prayers for all the people who still have that hatred.
I have lived my life by the motto, "Make friends different than yourself. It makes you a better person" By doing that my life has been enriched in countless ways. It made my parents better people as well just by being exposed to my friends. They are Mccoys who were raised in the mountains of Kentucky. I can walk in their door with anyone no matter race, religion, sexuality, nationality and whatever else you can think of that makes us different, and they will be welcomed. I truly believe if we would take the time to actually get to know each other we would all be better to each other. ❤

There is a beautiful surah in the Qur'an its says ""O you who believe! If a sinner comes to you with any news, investigate, lest you harm some people out of ignorance, and you become regretful for what you have done."" Surah al-Hujurat
The media is a double-edged sword. We have to ask and research before launching any reactions. The media directs others to false stories.
I am so glad for you.
@@Sandman86 that’s an even more important lesson now in the times of “fake news” but I suppose that was always around
It's not an easy thing to admit that you've been wrong. You should feel proud of yourself.
Thank you for being open minded. Sorry you were misled by media. We’re human just like you
WHOA!!!! This was in my city and just think… my doctor, Dr. Bahrami, could have been harmed if he didn’t show kindness to Mac. This is heavy! Great film!!!
So moving. This documentary will stay with me for a long time.
@@juliasmucker You hit the nail on the head, Julia. The training to dehumanize people is absolutely disgusting and evil.
Such a powerful story. This is something that should be shown in schools to provide students the opportunity to confront hatred and prejudice that is so common in our soiciety.
His story is incredible! I was there when they started filming this documentary and heard his story! I live in Muncie now because I attend university there, and I love our community and the people of Munice. I am so happy to be a small part of this story and the community.
I live in Brantford Ontario. That's so horrible! I hope you're doing well.
We need more of this in our lives.
Thank you for making this beautiful documentary openly available to everyone.
I could not love this more. Everybody has a story. Remember when Steve Hartman started by going to a phone booth, picking up the phone book that hung on a chain, picked out a name & he went & talked to that person. Every story was amazing. We're all in this world together, all just trying our best.
The power of love and kindness really can't be measured. Amazing story and an amazing documentary :)
Wow, this story is incredible! How is this not already a massive Hollywood film?
It should be. Who should we call? Along with the whole Winter Soldier series of others with similar changes of mindset.
Pretty sure we all know why Hollywood has not took up this true story 🤣 and spread the message
When half of the country live by the conservative code of prejudice, racism, and rage, it wouldn't be a smart move for a company to fund this.
They can't show muslim as good guys
Because it says something positive about Muslims
Wishing peace for the whole planet ❤
Period.
Only 200k views? This deserves at least 10M. Powerful story need to be shared.
Beautifully done. Living in Muncie, I remember when this happened, but never did I hear the story conveyed in such a way, definitely something everyone should see.
It's beautiful that there's a new nutbar terrorist among the muslims?
@@cyryc Did you watch this entire documentary? He had so much hate in him he wanted to cause harm, but once he met and spent time with the people he hated so much, he changed. He even converted. He saw how kind and wonderful they are, and now tells his story to hopefully change the minds of other hate filled people. If the people that were the target of his hate can accept him, why can't you?
@@Aris1013 oh f*** no I'm not wasting time watching an entire long video about a nutbar who joined a cult of nutbars. Yeah, and now he openly admits to admiring an illiterate kiddy diddler who's cult enslaved the old world for 1000 years. Met with love and kindness, he made the right choice, began to heal and was transformed. With countless soldiers set in motion for war, the world needs warriors for peace like Mac literally for survival.
While I'm happy Richard found his calling and is living a fulfilling life right now, this story should also help us rethink US militarism and the conversation around the destruction it brought upon, not only Muslims around the world, but also US soldiers who get radicalized by the destruction they witness and dehumanization of others they go to kill.
What a powerful story. I'm an old atheist. Hardcore, but this really got to me.
Hope the best to you
I'm asking god to guide u to the right path. All you need is just a pure heart. Take my word man
Phil...I used to be a non believer. Ask the creator to sincerely guide you with an open heart. What's the worst that can happen? If its all true and there happens to be a creator you can at least say you asked and you were sincere in looking and you didn't feel anything or get pulled in the creators direction. I just couldn't fathom that after all this in this life that there would be a Void at the end. That humans didn't have a reason to exist. Anyway that was my brief story. I also pray Allah to guide you and me continuously. -Adam
Its never too late bro, ALLAH is the most merciful

So inspiring!! Their kindness literally saved many lives ♥️
This made me cry. Right now I don’t have words to describe how this has made me feel
May we all find peace in our lives and this world
I'm a Muslims woman and watching this just comfort my believes. I do agree with the woman when she said that we need to be more kind with the people who suffer. I love all the humans in this earth. Love for each other NO EXCEPTION is our goal. May God bless the humanity ❤️
Thank you, New Yorker, for this wonderful documentary. As an immigrant Middle Eastern American I have experienced considerable prejudice and news items like this gives me hope and lightens my heart. I wish stories like this were in the news more often.
This is stunningly beautiful. Just when we feel hatred is dominant around us this light pierces through to show just how healing love is.
Absolutely sublime transformation. And perfectly congruent with what so many of us Christians who come to really know true Muslims have experienced - generosity, kinship, fraternity.
Only goes to show you that fear and loneliness are two traits people do not want in their life. Love is always the answer. 💛💛💛
wish this made the news cycle.. let's commit to sharing this broadly
This is playing at our local theatre for Doctober (month of documentaries in October)…can’t wait.
It's on CNN, that's how I found it.

Lessons learned: say “peace”, smile, if you don’t know-ask questions yourself, don’t listen to negative hateful people, and… be God conscious. ❤ peace be upon you ❤
Incredible story. We need more of these. Thanks for producing this film.
This should, and will, have 1,000 times the likes as it does today, before it wins the Oscar for best short/documentary for 2022. Which, for the record, is 2.1K likes, on October 10th, 2022. If it doesn't. It will have, the day after it wins.
This should be watched by all. It should also be included in all school curriculum. And especially would be a valuable short film to view for all brave military men and women as they transition into civilian life. So inspiring, and an amazing story of hope for humanity.
i agree but too many far right nut jobs would complain and protest that it be left out of curriculums.

The short film" Stanger at the gate" gets nominated for this year's Academy Award (Oscar) in the short film category. Congratulations
This documentary broke my heart wide open. I'm crying, being so moved by our capacity as human beings to heal and to change for the better.

What an amazing story. Just shows you can’t judge a book by its cover and just listening to someone makes a world of difference

Beautiful. Like John told us in verse, "All you need is love". This is a winner in my book on so many levels. Congratulations to the filmmakers!
A tear jerker!. Thank you. It takes courage to transition as a human being and to grow and be a contributor instead of a taker.
This one really got to me. One of my favourite Oscar nominees this year (in and out of its category - Documentary Short Film). Love and kindness is the cure.

Those people I just avoided never mistreated them. Thank you for sharing this - many people in our world need to watch this with a open mind and heart

Alot of this country is raised, as he was, with blinders on....we have what we made our truths...then we have THE truth...we all have so much more in common...regardless of our cultures...than the differences we unfortunately view as problems...i grew up in a great town around all walks of life...went to church every sunday...and just learned love as my religion...LOVE...its all of our origin...may we find it and nourish it to be stronger than any hate around us! .This documentary was amazing...reading the comments alone is like finding gold within human souls...may we all grow in sight broader than what weve been taught...to reach that peace and love beyond the biased reality thats out there...create LOVE...it conquers ALL!
What a moving and powerful piece. Thank you.
I read a part of this story on CNN. I am so grateful to God that Mac did not detonate that bomb in the Mosque. The thought of the harm it would have done almost stops my breathing!! That anyone could cause others such harm is unimaginable to me. Thank You God for Your grace and mercy!! Thank You 🙏🏿. Thank You God that they embraced him and showed him love.
