Behind Yuzuru Hanyu's new Long Program, lies a God of War in Japan / The Dragon of Echigo and a legendary battle - The Battle of Kawanakajima, deemed the biggest war in the Japan Sengoku Jidai (The warring-state era). The battle would be adapted into various games, legendary tale and the movie - Heaven & Earth. We decided to adapt Hanyu's program on the battlefield of the Kawanakajima Plain, and uncover the story of this Legendary Tale that would become the national symbol of Samurai spirit in Japan. Enjoy~
Yuzu chose this music “ Heaven and earth “ to skate his new long program, he uses this symbolical Japanese samurai’s spirit not just to tell the story of the Japanese God of War, but also tells his own story. He himself is God of the battles in figure skating ! The greatest figure skater of of all time !
So well said. It's now part of Hanyu's story. And he really portrayed the Japanese Samurai Spirit so well! Hanyu in OG2018 - Seimei on Ice. Hanyu in OG2022 - God of Battle on Ice!! Love love love his new program 💗
I remember watching this drama "Heaven and Earth" on TV with my father who was a big fan of Kenshin Uesugi, especially as our city was a part of the old Echigo, the territory where Kenshin Uesugi reigned. He was not the usual Samurai, he had an intelligent soul and human heart and he wanted his region and his people to prosper. So this Kawanakajima's battle was his battle against the cruel, egoistic Shingen Takeda, to save and help the people from the Takeda dictatorship. Yuzuru said that he found something in common in the thought of battle of Kenshin Uesugi, that is how he was able to transform himself to the person of Kenshin Uesugi. He was intelligent and he was a "ZEN-like" thinker, which is really like Yuzuru.
Yes we found a lot of similarities in traits between Hanyu and Kenshin. In some ways, Kenshin’s purpose of fighting is so pure - to protect the people, and he just wanna win the battle, not to reap the benefits such as taking advantages of enemy etc. So similar to Hanyu. Also, the act of him sending salt to Shingen when they were deprived of the resource, stating he wanna fight over sword not salt, was such a class act!! Been thinking about making another video drawing the similarities between Kenshin and Hanyu, and these positive values in life.. So much respect for both of them..
@atlantis315 Okay we will make another video about Yuzu & Kenshin. Will think of the storyline. Not so fast but will try it before Worlds 2021 so people have a better idea on the ideology behind. Stay tuned 💕😀
@@FigureSkatingFan great idea...I must confess that i started to look for more background info about this program because ,while Yuzu´s skating was superb, as always, I had a hard time connecting to it emotionally, the musical structure was for me quite challenging and unusual...that is my one fear , that a lot of poeple , not versed in eastern way of thinking, may have a hard time with it...lets hope for the best and thank you again for putting your time and energy into this.

Yes! We feel so honoured to watch Hanyu skating and respect him even more after knowing the stories behind. There's a lot of things also we can learn from Uesugi Kenshin. Grateful that he introduced this story to us 💕😃
So cool to see the skaters skating to their national classic and share their culture with the world! Reminds me of Anna Karenina from Evgenia, then Don Quijote from Javi, Seimei, and now this - Heaven & Earth from Yuzu!! Respect! And so interesting!
@@FigureSkatingFan i really hope he compete in Beijing. But tbh, if he decides not to, i would be heartbroken, but i would accept it. Theres always this pressure with the age luring over athletes head all the time, which I think is so wrong. I love the maturity when he skates, and I dont think he seems restricted at all when it comes to flexibility and stamina. I just cant get on board with the 15 year old russian girls, they are good, but they look like babies lol.
That's how you produce a program✨🙏🏻💖Not just to tell a story or show your preference but making the audience be curious for their selves to know you and your country better.
🌸🌸🌸Thank you very much for the detailed story about the legendary samurai! Yuzuru perfectly showed in his program "Heaven and Earth" his own feelings, his own samurai spirit, as well as the image of a historical hero. Yuzuru's Olympic performans of this program was dramatic and beautiful! He is the best, it was more than gold, he is a diamond💎 Yuzuru Hanyu is a living legend, he is golden himself! Good health and happiness to Yuzuru Hanyu🙏🙏🙏
Honestly thanks to Yuzu 💕 We were researching frantically about this story after his glorious free skate at Japan Nationals. The movie "Heave & Earth" was so interesting. When we saw the way they portrayed Uesugi Kenshin, it's really no wonder Hanyu chose to portray him. For example, Kenshin is not interested in the "things" he will get from winning the battle such as the treasures, castles, women, etc, he's just interested in the tactic and on winning the battle itself. Sounds familiar? Haha that's basically the kind of person Yuzu is. Not sure if there's English subtitles, but this incident is portrayed in the movie here: ua-cam.com/video/uSXY07OrT8A/v-deo.html Then, it's 1 full month of obsession over the Battle and the characteristic of Uesugi Kenshin. Despite being a warlord, he displayed great respect to his rivals, including sending salt to his enemies (Takeda Shingen) when his state was deprived of the resource. He stated "I want to fight over sword, not salt" Such respect to him! And also, that resemblance how Hanyu is as a person. Super interesting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uesugi_Kenshin
This is such a great video! I am so glad this is created to share with other audience who might not be familiar with non western cultures. It would be great if you do more of these!! also to some others: Please STOP saying this is just another Seimei. That would be so ignorant
OMG!! You mean there's some who said this is just another Seimei?!! What!? We are not aware of that because we seldom check social media. This program is so different and the message behind is so distinguished and different from Seimei! Please share the video with them if you see anyone saying that!!
Imagine Kenshin Uesugi, looking over the river of Kawanakajima, the battle he was going into, looking at the sky, looking at the earth, and looking over the battle ground....then finally finding the sun from the heaven, shining over himself, finding his true victory of the earth.
@@FigureSkatingFan Thank you! I am proud of Kenshin's "kenshin - Contribution" to his country and his people, since I am originally from one of cities in Echigo Region, and I still remember that I and my father were so absorbed in the drama of "Heaven and Earth" when I was still a toddler's age. He was such a "solid, calm, considerate, yet courageous" person, who exibited a "Zen"-like air, which must have calmed every person's nerves. He was really a great "traditional" Samurai with a noble air and sense of greatness.
You come from really great place with great history :) Yes there’s so much we can learn from Kenshin Uesugi’s values in life.. I found it so pure and so different form normal warriors...
@@FigureSkatingFan Also, you can find an interesting thing about Kenshin. As Hanyu's name means "feather, born" kenshin means Faithful diligence and Belief. Japanese names very often do mean something about the personality, strangely. Also, in Japan, the people in the Echigo region are traditionally famous for the patience, couragous perseverance, and humanity, because of the cruel natural conditions (such as the long snowing winter, cruel coldness of the winter, frequent earthquake and Tsunami). As Yuzuru said in his press conference and interview, I believe that Yuzuru has found some common spirits in the personality of Kenshin.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes this was a tactical and legendary battle! (Sorry about the victims, but the tactic used by the warlords and the Samurai Spirits displayed are just beyond imagination). Just on a side note, Uesugi Kenshin actually desired for World peace. He's forced into the battle due to warring state era he lived in. He even became a monk temporary because he couldn't stand the killing in the war. But his people needed his help for the defense and hence he's just gotta protect his people and did the battle. He's skilful and wanted to win the battle always, but he's not interested in the rewards of the war. He respected his enemy a lot as well. There's quite a lot of common spirit we found between him and Hanyu. Hope you like the story and it will make you wanna search for more to read :)
YES! So true. He always chooses interesting theme and something new to skate to. (Also because Japanese history is not so mainstream in the English media so it's really interesting for us to research about it from his skating). How Yuzuru chooses to educate us and deepen our understanding of Japanese culture gives his work the kind of depth we haven't seen in figure skating performance. This is why his artistic work is transformative. It gives us consciousness about Japanese history. Without consciousness, there is no meaning in life. @@kadovax6567 It's definitely not true. We went to read more about Uesugi Kenshin after seeing this comment. There are also some rumors saying he's female not male.
