As a software engineer and nerd that learns Danish (😖) in my free time, I feel like this channel has been tailormade for me. Great talk, absolutely fascinating how "can we make it run doom" has evolved from a meme to a scientific experiment and that my favourite nordic culture embassador was directly involved :D Hav det godt!
You like punishing yourself? Ive been trying to learn French, and plenty of time I've had this "This language is crap, why would you say it like that?!" Then I say it in Danish, and our language is also as shit as French.. Without all the linguistic gender stuff going on.

But a lot of our messed up language, is imported from German. Which puts you at an advantage. I've heard you can learn German fluently in 400 hours. Guess the reverse is the same.

I've seen Bad Apple on cardboard cutouts, analog oscillators, as ascii art in a terminal emulator, the CPU core utilization graph of the Windows task manager, and the actual peel of an actual apple. Believe me, the day where something _can't_ play Bad Apple is still far off xD

Wait, does that mean you could use Doom as humanity's worst checksum? You translate the message into game-inputs then add the resulting game-state at the end of the message. The decoder gets the message, tries the inputs and checks if the results match.
Awesome presentation! I played doom on PS1 back in the days(2004-ish, I was 9), and 4 years ago I played it on my low end laptop my friend gift me, so I test it and it worked flawlessly. Now on my sister's laptop I am playing it all day for 2 weeks now... so I wanted to tell the story here... sorry :D I stopped a video to tell you, thank you so very much for this funny and perfect presentation. I'd love to see how it affected the game, maybe using a 360 camera and somehow grab the skydome graphics from that.
I love this project, what an awesome way to practice problem solving. Way cooler to have it only run demo files than those BS videos where something receives a stream of doom and people say it's "running" it. (If you don't know what I mean, check out when people were saying doom can run on a pregnancy test)

Alot of graphical software used various techniques of this back in the 90ties, games and demoscene productions. You generally also didnt want to change palette on the fly back in the 8bit era with realtime graphics, getting raster artifacts. Color-quantization, non visual range/non-linear visibility removals but also a whole world of raster tables.
My boyfriend is nordic (i am too) and i've watched your shorts for a long time and he just started studying programmimg so i thought this was neat and oddly fitting :3

Another theory about the SM64 thing is that it was faked with cheats, at the very least it seems unlikely that it was a cosmic ray imo, but people just took the cosmic ray explanation and ran with it. Regardless, really good talk, fun stuff!
I think the cosmic ray changing a SM64 speedrunner's position thing is actually not true. LunaticJ made a video on it. Otherwise that's really awesome!
20:53 lol, I also used k means clustering on images to reduce the number of colors in a toy project I had to convert images to Unicode with Textures (and not just by brightness values) :O Now I feel validated in my decision :D

No we didn't. We saw pretty early on that it wasn't going to work so the testing we did wasn't that extensive to include if something caused more issues than something else. I think I did say "Ok, bye" after the Q&A (which isn't included because the audience didn't have a mic so you can't hear the back and forth chatter)

why was de-noising on the satellite considered a good thing? your applying a lossy transform on a compute constrained environment. I'm sure the solution was clever but whats the gain?
If for whatever reason you need your spacecraft to then use that data for something, like pointing, distance from a target etc. Otherwise I agree with you
You want your satellites to be as independent as possible. If they always have to "phone home" with data then that becomes a bottleneck when you scale up or are asking them to do more and more work.
now can you play doom on a satellite and then actually play it from the ISS. So the Satellite going by ISS is the ridiculous expensive gaming platform but it in contact directly with ISS. (so the hard working people in the ISS can play DOOM. for science.

You can read the paper online, it's called "Generative AI... in Space! Adversarial Networks to Denoise Images Onboard the OPS-SAT-1 Spacecraft"
