I have tears streaming down my face with the emotion that Ben puts into this song. It's also one of my favorites. Nothing but applause from me. Truly amazing and beautiful.
I saw him in concert last year and you are correct, it was awesome in person. I took my husband (a middle aged rock and roll loving dude) who was dubious about going, but he was so blown away by Ben's voice and the whole concert.
Flawless. This is not an easy song to sing well. I love how he slipped into the “Evan” money note right before the last verse. Classic Ben Platt making an already perfect song, perfect for him. ❤
It's really interesting how being unapologetic and fully embodying your unique attributes goes a long way in their delivery and reception. For example, his body twitches and somewhat over tremulous/ fluttery vibrato could very easily threaten to take you out of his performances, but instead, his commitment to them do the opposite and you sort of buy into the character and experience he's selling. Rather than try to fit into your expectation he invites you to the show he IS giving, and from there all he has to do is execute.
I saw him at his first stop on the Reverie tour, and i can confirm his rendition of the song has ruined all others for me. He is absolutely flawless live, you can feel his voice in your soul.
one of the few people.... everyone from broadway has the same type of vocal processing. not too compressed and not too many layers. but its very definitely not a small population. sleeping at last for example has even less processed vocals then ben platt if you listen closely
There isn't a better version available than Ben Platt. He has about 50 different versions on youtube. And there's not anyone who comes close to being this good.
I've been watching your videos for a while! I love how simple it seems when you break down the essence of each performance! I'm relatively new to the world of theatre; my gf is a lifelong performer and choreographer for some local theaters near us and the culture swept me up so quickly. We are HUGE Ben Platt fans; saving for some tickets to see Parade soon. I agree with you judgement of him sometimes though! There's been performances I've watched where I'm like "Cmon Ben! Give me more than that!" but that's just because we KNOW he has more to give! I've always loved to sing (alone), and I've heard I'm good for being completely untrained from a few different people. What is some guidance you'd give for working up the nerve to sing in front of people? There are songs that I think I knock out of the park in the car alone, but when I go to perform them for even my girlfriend or family there's something in me stopping me from really going for it at big moments of songs out of fear of missing the mark. It's like an 'I'd rather hold back and sound bad than give it my all and sound bad' type of thing.
Singing WITH people is always the best way to get more comfortable. No reason why you and your gf can't belt out some songs together in the car - and who cares if you can't hit every note tbh. Hope you both get to see Parade sometime soon! Thanks for the comment Jake.
@@MarcDanielPatrick Thanks for replying so quickly! We’re hoping to be able to see Parade sometime in the early summer! There’s always these cabaret style events at this theater my gf works for and I’ve always wanted to be able to get up there and sing a song I love. Hopefully I’ll be able to work up the nerve one of these times. Look forward to more videos from you!
but it is a concert which is supposed to showcase your voice. You should react to his song Rain that he sung on tour. He just jumps around and just has a blast.
This version is good but I just went to find the Jeremy Jordan version because of posts on here and OMG it blew me away and reduced me to tears because it was so full of emotion and made me sad for how far illness has taken me away from the woman I used to be.
Check out Adrian Matthews. He was just a kid at the time. Uploaded a UA-cam of himself singing the song and was invited by the cast to sing it on stage. Kid tore the song a new one. Had the entire cast crying even tho they hear the song at least twice a day everyday. Most touching cover I've ever heard.
Love Ben Platt even though he sometimes overdoes it. You should check out his duet with Kelly Clarkson of “Make You Feel My Love” and Kelly’s cover of “She Used To Be Mine”, both from her show. As they are both shortened versions to fit the time allotted, you could do both in the same reaction video. So good.
I saw him perform this on the opening show of the tour and thought he did a fantastic job. I am not a huge fan of men covering the song because the message is so woman centric, but Ben's voice is so lovely. He did it justice. Oddly enough, my favorite versions of the song are done by Adrian (during a sing along after the show on Broadway) and Josh Castille who signs the song in ASL (the woman who sings it while he is signing is phenomenal as well). What is your favorite version of the song?
I disagree with the gender arguments just because there are so many universal themes in this number that anyone can relate to, pregnancy is one small piece of the pie. (No pun). Too many versions of this song out there and too many that I've reacted to on this page already to choose a fav tbh.
Love your reviews Marc! Always so insightful and constructive. Please check out Lucie Jones's version of She Used to be Mine. It's incredible. Her runs alone are pure magic, and there is so much heart in her performance.
My favorite cover is done by a young man named Adrian Matthews on stage on the Waitress Musical channel. You should really react to it. you will not be disappointed. you will be truly impressed as was I and millions of others.
I love Jeremy Jordan's version as well. Love Jeremy's "FIGHT just a little..." And MDP Imma be one of those that says "WHAT"?!!! He lets you down 50% of the time?!!! The guy is brilliant!!! I'm not sure if I have ever heard him sing where I didn't love it. I appreciate your view though. 😊 Also, could you check out/review "Who Will Love Me As I Am" (from Side Show) as sung by Brian Justin Crumb and Kyle Dean Massey. It...is...AMAZING. I think BJC sings in the original key?
Awesome vid. Always love watching you make faces for I do the same thing haha. Would love for you to react to Yebba’s performance of My Mind I really think you’d love it.
I’d love to see you re-react to Jeremy Jordan’s I know it was 2 years ago and I’d really like to see you react to it again to see if you have changed any
Late to this but have to agree with you, Marc. This is stunning vocally but sometimes, just sometimes, I want him to stop with his tricks and his ticks and his ways. I didn't emotionally connect to this version but appreciate his craft immensely.
Ben Platt has been kind of a meme in recent years (at least in my circles lol), because he does just.... way too much. He has talent for sure, but he's just... too much lol
This was my first time hearing this performance. My thought was that he gets closest to how Sara does it. Not the notes, but the intention. I’ve heard better singers do this song, but not many who live this song so well.
I like Ben P a lot.... but can never quite embrace his vibrato ... too rapid for my taste. No offense, but it suggests a lack of vocal control. Now Jeremy Jordan ... THERE is a vibrato after which to model your vocal stylings.
Yeah stylistically for this song the vibrato is too much and the lyrics lose clarity when it’s used through the entire vocal line. I wish he would Straight tone it and finish the ends of phrases with vibrato
Always gotta be negative. If you don’t like something move on. And Adriana Caselotti was 14 when she cut that vocal. Being able to control vibrato is one hell of a talent…but I guess you wouldn’t know that.
The song is about a woman who is looking back on her life and mourning the parts of her she has lost. To have a man cover it turns it into a typical "She's broken and needs me to rescue her" trope. He sang it fine, but the song choice is tone deaf.
@@MarcDanielPatrick The audience paid to be there because they wanted to see and hear Ben Platt, so they are biased toward enjoying anything he sings. And he sang it well. But the whole story of Waitress is about a woman finding the strength to leave an abusive marriage and make a new life for herself and her baby. It’s about her self-discovery, even rejecting her affair partner. Perhaps if he had re-gendered the lyrics, it would have fit the original theme better.
Ok this is a reach, I'm a huge Sara Bareilles fan and she put a little of herself in this song. When she wrote it she said it reflects how you look back. I believe, in that sense, anyone regardless of gender could take part into feeling the song in their own right.
Wow, I don't think I've heard a version of this song I haven't loved. You can tell he loved singing this. His belts on "mine" gave me goosebumps.
the guy really is something else
Agreed 100% never heard of him or his singing of this song, CHILLS🥶in ALL the best ways... . .
So glad I got to see this live!
Ben Platt never let's me down. 100% all the time!!!!!!!!! Love listening to him sing.....
Ben Platt gives me chills every time I hear his voice, especially live.
I think he is in touch with the emotions of this song and it shows in his vocal performance.
WOW! This is one of my all time favorites and I didn't think anyone could beat Sara's version but Ben brought tears to my eyes with this one.
Its pretty solid huh
I have tears streaming down my face with the emotion that Ben puts into this song. It's also one of my favorites. Nothing but applause from me. Truly amazing and beautiful.
I saw him in concert last year and you are correct, it was awesome in person. I took my husband (a middle aged rock and roll loving dude) who was dubious about going, but he was so blown away by Ben's voice and the whole concert.
That's my friend Michael's video. He did a great job capturing that!
Flawless. This is not an easy song to sing well. I love how he slipped into the “Evan” money note right before the last verse. Classic Ben Platt making an already perfect song, perfect for him. ❤
I got to see him in "Parade" after I recorded this video in Boston. He is incredible! What a gift to see live!

Beautiful rendition ❤
Another thing I love is how Ben Platt is one of the few people who does not use voice enhancers or any aftereffects apart from a echo or reverb
It makes his album sound like his real voice. Maybe a bit too perfect but then again you can choose your takes. Live you only get one shot
one of the few people.... everyone from broadway has the same type of vocal processing. not too compressed and not too many layers. but its very definitely not a small population. sleeping at last for example has even less processed vocals then ben platt if you listen closely

I saw him perform this live in Chicago last September. 💯 You mentioned his quirkiness when performing; I adore it.
Led me to think
That's kind of what i LOVE about his voice!

I saw his opening night in Seattle and I have to say the vibrato is definitely over kill.

It’s not overkill to me. It’s gorgeous and he controls it perfectly.
Terrific--just love his passion! Marc, you should watch Carnegie Mellon's Lucy Hall's rendition of this song. Lovely and heartbreaking 💗
Fascinating! I just can't understand how often new videos appear?
I linked your reaction video in the description for my original video.

...Ben putting his unique vibrato on it
I thought he showed great control of his vibrato in this one...

lol what is not to like about Ben Platt and this amazing song?
I’d love to see you re-react to Jeremy Jordan’s I know it was 2 years ago and I’d really like to see you react to it again to see if you have changed any
Honestly if I close my eyes, Jeremy is damn near perfect- his expressions are just a little too over the top for me
morisette amon version ✨❤️
Could you react to Alison Luffs version of this song?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You should hear 14 year old Adrian Matthew sing "She Used To Be Mine". It's not perfect but it's a great head start for someone so young.
I'm with you, Marc. Sometimes he's so.... gratuitous. Trying to hard. And overplaying his strengths. And I agree with you on this vocal.
And BTW, an acquaintance of mine does the sound for his live shows and says he's a lovely person, which oddly relieved me.
Can you review Micaela Diamond's "You Don't Know This Man" from Parade?
Is there a video of it? Link???
Ben sounded great, but Jeremy Jordan still has the best male vocal of this song.. IMHO.
PLEASE REVIEW FOR FOREVER BY 4 EVANS

fair enough, its all a matter of taste
His vibrato annoys me a little but great performance for sure
He slipped a little but very quick still the best rendition of the song
Too much vibrato. He is a great singer but it's not a good song choice for him.
Whats the reaction for? Just say " this is the standard" and move on.
Yeah stylistically for this song the vibrato is too much and the lyrics lose clarity when it’s used through the entire vocal line. I wish he would Straight tone it and finish the ends of phrases with vibrato
Also, remember. Ben Platt is a Jew and his 2 brothers that sing with him are extremely devout Jews. Baruch Hashem!
Unpopular opinion: its too much vibrato...he sounds like a male version of Snow White. I don't like it...
We understand where that song sits in a male range right? Would you rather have vibrato or it be pitchy af?
Always gotta be negative. If you don’t like something move on. And Adriana Caselotti was 14 when she cut that vocal. Being able to control vibrato is one hell of a talent…but I guess you wouldn’t know that.
You're right. Very unpopular opinion.
Jeremy Jordan's version of this song is way better.
Jeremy's version....wow. His "fire" is amazing... so good
MDP reacted to JJ performing this song 2 years ago.
I love Jeremy's version as well
I agree!
I did.Although based on these comments, I feel like most people shouldn't go look for it 🙈
Hellna that vibrato is way too much for me..👎

I couldn't disagree more. But ye know I'm a man and all. The audience in the room seemed more than okay with it, which is all that really matters.
