I just slapped myself the forehead while watching your video! Thank you for making it. I’ve owned a chimney charcoal starter for many, many years, but never thought of turning it into a hobo stove. I like the fork-handle hack too. Nicely done.

" If you put a stainless steel steamer insert ( opens like a flower) in the bottom you can use wood pellets, which give a clean, controlled burn. Also keeps ashes from falling out and reduces airflow, which is only needed for charcoal burns. The fork/ handle idea is genius. "

I would modify it with kanthal wire handle
      ua-cam.com/users/shortsg_m2LNOg5zA?feature=share
With the fire going flat out you'll still be able to pick up the fire and transfer it to a snuff pot

Modification suggestion: Don't cut a fuel feed window; it is getting too much air now. Instead, make another fork-handle on the top griddle (wire grid), and lift it when needed and drop wood into the top. As said previously, it is getting too much air and burning the fuel too fast. Close "some" of the air holes or create a metal slide that covers the holes after the fire is well established.

    Great idea!
I was thinking to get me one
of those charcoal starters, too, having the same idea as you. But due to the pandemic I was not able to get to the hardware store until now.
So it still is the "huge dogfood can with handcut holes" - stove until I can make it.
The dogfood can is working great, btw.
Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed.
    Greetings from Germany!

I do recommend you get a cheap pizza pan from the dollar store to put underneath the chimney so you don't catch the grass on fire. Especially in a dry season. Thanks for the tip. I've been looking at my fire starter thinking I wish I could use It to cook! Yup! Will try it soon. Also, going to try my gas top grate over it to hold the pan and then I could drop wood in from the top.

You could load it with proper firewood, like four pieces , split of some splints from the middle of each, fill middle with fatwood, waxpaper, Birch bark, pine cones or the like and sticks.
Light it from underneath, have something under. Burn from center of wood will last a while and the center will act as a chimney and flame in center. Obviously for duration burn, winter?
Or fill with standing twigs & branches from start, light underneath or on top.

I made a charcoal grill out of 2 refrigerator shelves and 6 concrete blocks. I put 3 blocks in a square "U" shape on the ground, 1 fridge shelf on top, 3 blocks on top and 1 fridge shelf on top.
That was my first time ever forging chicken. I poured charcoal on the first shelf and cooked the chicken on the top shelf.
Even with an 8 inch gap between the charcoal and the food, It cooked the skin on the chicken so fast, it had burnt it to a char before the meat ever changed color and it destroyed the baked potatoes.

I'm a 55 Alabama born redneck and even I know oven racks are ok but not refrigerator racks, they're galvanized and poisonous fumes are released when heated over fire😷🤢🤮🙄. Just like idiots boiling peanuts in A galvanized wash tub and poisoning people. And yes in the south we eat boiled salty peanuts and Cajun flavor.
