  • Knifemaking is really a stress-relieving process for me and all of my knife making builds are inspired from forged in fire and some great knife maker like alec stele, Slavik Telly, Simple little Life and traditional Japanese knives. This is Japanese Tanto Knife also Known as wakizashi. This is one of my personal favourite knives. I tried to make it similar to a small katana. Techniques are definitely not the Japanese way, but I tried to get the same look. The material used is M2 High-speed steel bar 1/4" thick. For the hardening process, air-hardening method is used. Hope you guys like this build. don't forget to like this video

    Great job brother!
    I went through a lot of knife making videos before getting to yours. I really liked the way you made your knife the process was quite different from others. Gave me a chance to learn a lot of new things.
    I have a question, what could have been done in order to give the knife its original wooden texture finish. I tried lacquer aerosol spray paint on my wooden knife but the finishing was not what I expected.
    I think you may have an answer to my problem.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks dear, first thing is that you can't use any wood for handle if you are willing to make a more presentable. Tried to choose burl wood which is the densest part of any wood( you can find root portion of the trees, I found them on coal supplier who also sells these roots as a fuel). There are many wood species in India which are very dense. Try to do the sending work as much as you can. I usually go upto 1000 grit, if you go upto that then just dip it into linseed oil. That gives you the best finish on your handle and also stabilize it. You can also go with CA glue finish ( super glue normally called). Do it after 600grit, but this is a repeated process. I mean you have to do it multiple times before the buffing process. After the 1000 grit, buff it. Try do the buffing at slow rpm. This is a time consuming process but gives nicest finish.

      @@ambroscustom brother I didn't have so many tools available with me. Also I made my tantō knife during the first week of the lockdown from available wooden planks at my home. I only had an angle grinder, 3 different grade sanding papers and a sharp IKEA knife. I just pulled off my knife with the help of these tools. Since everything is closed can't get new tools. But will try linseed oil ! I have seen it giving a nice tone to the wood and bringing out the natural pattern in it. I have started on another project learning from the mistakes I did during the first attempt. I hope to do a better job this time. Thanks for the replying! I learned something new Today.

    This is an amazing build. I have a damasks blade queued up for my next project. I just learned so much from this build. The only thing I question is whether the pin should be metal or bamboo. I know the traditional pin for a katana is bamboo. Is it different for a Tanto? No matter either way, more a curiosity than a complaint :) Thank you for posting such a detailed build. I'm glad I found this site.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 роки тому

      Thanks pal for the words, I truly appreciate. The pin is actually a mosaic pin like you use in normal knife handles for the decorative purposes. That's what it is, good luck for your build buddy:)

      Thanks, because I m making a Saya for a tanto I forged and I found your idear great, might do the same!
      Was also wondering, I saw you air cooled the edge and the spine stays soft, did you try etching the blade to see if you had a temper line? I m never air cooled steel so I dunno if you can get a hamon like that

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 роки тому

      Buddy I do the air quench because it was high speed steel and very costly. I don't want to take a risk of bending it or cracking it during the quench. I found that even after heating it and placing it in the air even then this material gets hard. I etched the blade but the transition I found is on the very top near the spine area which is also found to be soft during the file test. So there was no meaning to show it. That's why I leave it clean. But I think that you can definitely able to get Hamon if you only able to heat the edge only. Knives usually not made with high speed steel, I hope your material is different than mine. Good luck for your knife 👍

    • @tristantaylor444
      @tristantaylor444 4 роки тому

      Hum I see, how ever you knife looks great even without the temper line 😉 well actually at the moment I m using old files to forge, I test the carbon rate by breaking at doing the sparkle test. Took a little testing to get the heat treat right but I got a rather good hamon on this one in oil so I m rather happy with it, only I m not very good at working with wood and have very little material so the Saya is rather a challenge at the moment. Thanks for your time and have fun forging nice blades. Cheers

      Buddy you can try on a shop which supplies drill bits and cutting tools like end mills etc. Those supplier usually have high speed steel stock for lathe parting tools. Usually flat stock of such width is quite difficult to get but I hope you get it there. Extremely hard material to work but Good luck.

      Yeah buddy it's not easily available, I didn't knew any shop in Singapore but you can try those shops who sell cutter and bits for lathe and other machines, they have this material available in small portion but you can go with d2 or d3 steel.They have carbon around 1.5 to 2.10 % and also air Hardened material. HSS not good for forging it starts to crack much faster than the regular carbon steel. So go wisely.

    if that is really M2 (1.3343) steel then it's not as easy to harden and temper as a simpler carbon steel. I'd be surprised if you got a result that resembles the full capabilities of the steel. May I ask why you chose this over a normal oil hardening steel?

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  3 роки тому

      The metal supplier didn't have any thin material left in his stock. I don't want to use 8mm stock. So I choose this, way too harder to work with, and I think it's still quite hard being a air harden material and I don't want it full hardness because in that way it became brittle also. Even after 3 tempering Cycles at 250° it always felt alot more harder than my regular knife blades. So I think it's good. Thanks for being here:)

    厚刃のアーミーナイフみたいな仕上がり。
    鎧通しとして、日本でもっと高品質な鉄が取れたなら、槍の穂先として完成されたかもしれない形になる。

    コレはコレでCOOLでナイスで良いけど、日本人の感覚だと《脇差し》とはチョイと違うと感じちゃうね…
    個人的には,もっと分厚いブレードの『鎧通し』をモディファイしたCQBナイフが造れるんなら、ホントに欲しいよ!!

      Yes you are right, difference of length other than that tsuba but mostly resemble to eachother that's why i put that name.

      AMbros Custom its just you put “or”
      Because they are not the same,
      And not only that the function is also different
      Mostly tanto used for seppuku, and wakizashi used for dual wielding blade (nitoryu) technique

    Меня удивляет: под видео есть 3 русских коммента, критикующих его работу, ведь критиковать действительно есть за что, нож... Эээ меч..? Как блин это назвать то... Вобщем получился весьма косячным во множестве аспектов, даже разбирать косяки не хочется, ведь он просто полностью состоит из них. И есть куча одинаковых хвалебных нерусских комментов. Тип люди, что с ними не так? Тут же даже не только железяка косячная, но и видос смонтирован ужасно, 3 мелодии наложены друг на друга, они вообще видео смотрели?

    Why dont you forge your blade, is it better to only cut it out and grind it?!

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 роки тому +1

      Initially I planned to make the knife by forging but since it's a High speed steel it barely moves with the hammer. I found that it was not acting like a regular carbon steel, so leave that plan.

      This is air hardened steel dear, water will crack it easily during the quench that's why I did the air quench.
