Matlock tried teaching Steve Jones chords but Jones was only interested in barre chords. The other Pistols didn't like Matlock because he was 'nice' and wanted to be 'fun like The Beatles' and he was kicked out just for that reason. I know that he detests the line "I am an antichrist" which Lydon wrote. Him and Lydon have always had a strained relationship but then Lydon is like that. Even Jones said recently that he is not comfortable around Lydon. Interestingly enough the whole reason that McLaren put the Sex Pistols together was because Jones was compulsive thief and he wanted to get him off the streets. Steve had to overdub Sid's bass on Bodies because Glen refused to return to add bass to the song after he was kicked out. Glen played with Sid before Sid embarked on his fateful tour to the states as a gesture that enabled Sid to fund his trip. Glen is a good bloke.

There is no doubt, and it is corroborated by so many of the punk luminaries of the era, the Pistols were at the height of their powers with Matlock on bass and songwriting. With him gone, they soon became parody. I met him btw. In 1986 he was playing with Johnny Thunders and my then-band happened to support him. I seem to recall he loved his beer....great song in this vid, great voice too, brilliant musician....
Glen is a good singer and player who writes cool songs. Nice to hear he likes the bass playing of both Klaus Voorman and not surprising but also nice to hear he likes Holger Czukay. Interesting that he mentions how much he liked Tamla Motown via Dusty Springfield on Ready, Steady, Go!. I remember watching a radio interview with John Lydon not too long ago where I distinctly remember him saying he (JL) didn’t like Tamla Motown and New Orleans Blues, I think he said.

Glen was too " middle class " for Lydon basically " . It´s very possible Malcom also thought that a more " Punk/Chav " character would enrich the band . And were they right or what ? I played bass in a Sex Pistols concept band in the early 90's. I loved those simple powerful bass lines, especially Submission...all of them rocked! I had a cheat sheet taped to my side fill on butchers paper in black texta.

Glen was the main songwriter, and he wrote good songs. Very good songs. All the Pistol's original songs are strong, well-crafted and catchy. But Steve created riffs and tunes, too. And they also required Lydon's lyrics and delivery to make them the statements they became. Plus the power and force and tightness of that band. I think you needed all those elements to get it to the level they got in terms of lasting impact.
Goofy lyrics, but I love the chord structure. It has a pronounced Them vibe, which is only natural since there wouldn't have been any punk rock without "Gloria" and "I Can Only Give You Everything."
