Exactly how a teacher would handle this. I've thought on more than one occasion that Matt has to take that parental/teacher role and has to see the 'uproar' coming and head it off before it gets out of hand and he loses his players. That said, he also knows when comedic relief is appreciated and provides plenty of freedom too. Goes without saying, but everyone here are absolute legends
I noticed that whenever Sam rolls bad on detecting traps, Nott always rushes ahead and takes the possible damage. Same thing when they were doing the job for the Gentleman.
I think it's part of Sam playing into the roleplay. As far as Nott knows, she successfully checked for traps and didn't see any. He does a really good job of not making meta game moves and doing disadvantageous things either because "Nott wouldn't know that" or just out of a general fear the character has
@@isaacstevens1912 No such thing as meta gaming.. Well, there is. It is not a negative thing as you people would like to make it out to be, it is simply inevitable. Game has been out for a little less than 50 years now. People know how to counter creatures. We have access to online monster manuals. It is the DMs job to shake things up and make the game unpredictable. The entire party is up against a troll and the wizard cast a fire spell - because well.. Troll. Great! Except this troll's regeneration doesn't stop just because of fire, instead it requires Poison to halt the regeneration. I mean.. Meh, it's not so hard to avoid "meta game moves". I just DM'd and had skeletons going up against the party and one member was like "so that's bludgeoning damage so it does 50% more damage" and I went "as you hit the skeleton, the damage does not seem to be more or less impactful". And they all went ":O :O :O - we're in deep shit now". Likewise a failed roll on a trap - does not mean that a trap is present. You literally cannot predict it as a player unless you suspect foul (but why would you).
43:48 Taliesin is the only one that apologizes for being disruptive even though he wasn't really to blame. That's why I love him. That guy has a heart of gold
@@jasonreed7522 Yeah man. There’s snake people with varying degrees of humanity to them. Seems kind of weird. Definitely theorizing that something turned humans into the snake people
The DM joy you get when you find something in the PCs story that will allow you to touch some random or otherwise out of the way lore, places and monsters ♡
The fun part is that it is due to Matt`s "neurotic" perfectionism: "OMG, Travis is an expert! What to do What to do if the topic comes up?!? " - Starts reading literature about the topic... - And, yeah, they literally did not HAVE to raid the boat, by any means, and it came as quite a surprise.
Not expecting the seafairing arc to be in Season 1 of the announced animation, but looking forward to seeing this animated so that Fjord ACTUALLY knows what he’s doing with a vessel (while still being an awkward captain) instead of floundering through it. Poor Travis.
I'm surprised he didn't ask the bugs to stop biting, though, to be honest. Not sure that would have worked, but that was my immediate reaction when they started becoming a nuisance.
for sure, i was thrilled with how quickly he brought the character to life.. also yea hes just doing for himself not for the favor of a god or anything... where as jester does everything for the traveler. super awesome
Man I live in Manitoba and I have to say I have been in the bush without repellent and the mosquitoes have been so bad that it was like an infinite number of them were everywhere now let us be fair not everyone bit you but at times it did kind of feel like it.
Firbolgs can naturally speak to and be understood by creatures and plants,(and can possibly make them comply with small requests, but not guaranteed) they just can't understand them back.(without additional spells or abilities)
It's awkward, because having everything on that D&D Beyond site actually makes it harder to play quickly in many respects, but they have to not mention that because of the sponsorship.
I wonder how much of the story comes about because of them being curious about stuff and Matt thinking "but what if?" And stays up late prepping content that he will bring up in four or five sessions.
Anybody else realise, if jester hadn’t gone with Cad, he would have been ambushed alone and would have possibly had to role a new character. I almost lost my baby caduceus!
@@christiandaley4507 And she's only doing it to troll Travis because he doesn't LIKE to rp romances in these games. I have to be honest, I find it irritating that the character is just allowed to do it nonstop without anyone putting a stop to it. Some of the jokes just get old after a while. A lot of Jester's shtick stopped being cute and endearing a long time ago.
@@robinnelsen7869 "...without anyone putting a stop to it" As a DM, I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, yo. If one player is "trolling" another player, and the "trolled" player is uncomfortable with it, they would normally say something out of character in order to make them stop. If the instigating player won't stop, I'll have a chat with them outside the game to make sure they understand their advances aren't welcome. If the problem persists after this, I'll end up asking the instigating player to leave the game. It's better to have one less obnoxious player and everyone else at the table comfortable with one another, than force the entire group to endure someone who rubs anybody the wrong way. Since Travis has never, within the game asked Laura to stop flirting with his PC in character, as a DM I'd assume he's not so bothered by it. They're also, you know, adults, and paid actors who are performing for our entertainment. I've found a lot of critters take their game way more seriously than they do, or at least those critters' idea of their game.
The face Liam makes when Marisha says she always careful with what she touches kills me. Instant flashbacks to all the people she has hit in the face while playing DnD.
@@OddSea05 thx! oh, i thought that particular reaction was referencing all the children and plantlife Keyleth has destroyed. It's an uncanny streak when you think about it.
"I was the single survivor" "I have been lucky enough to survive working alone" I seriously think Jumanji doesn't know he's dead. But he should, because food. But somehow he doesn't. And that bothers me. I want to know.
2:00:00 All Hail Laura Bailey. Coming up with the bug carrying the bread 5 times its size as the most amazing thing Jester's ever seen is brilliant! It's ludicrous because as Jester said, Oh, shit. I've seen some crazy shit," but it's also SO Jester, plus the fact that some bugs are crazy strong IS pretty amazing! :'D
Its not that crazy when you think about it, its all about scale. Bugs can often lift many times their own body weight because thats how physics works at that size. Its also why bugs can survive falling from heights that would pulp most mammals.
@@FasterOstrich To be fair, it was kind of a high pressure situation and she made a panic move. She really shouldn't have done that, but it kinda rolls with the narrative even if totally didn't on a tactical standpoint.
Yeah I loved that part. She's fought a manticore, locked a high-ranking official on a high balcony while he was naked, fought a devil toad, pranked a temple of worship, but that's what comes to mind 😂

Man, Caleb was relentless in trying to identify Aventika's weapons. I felt that every time he tried to do it, Matt was trying to think on his feet of a way to stop it.

Ever since Liam started GMing some one shots and running a game for his kids, he's grown to be really appreciative and respectful to Matt. It's really awesome to see! When I GM a game, I don't -want- or go seeking praise, but those moments make you feel really good after working so hard to make a fun world. I'm sure it feels good for Matt too.
I also noticed this. It is so adorable. Also whenever Matt brings out a new map or effect for the map, I love how they all make oohs and aahs and you can notice how proud matt is that he gave them something cool 😄
I don't know when Liam started GMing for his kids and one-shots, but he showed Matt a lot of appreciation even back in C1. I remember one session ended with Liam giving a standing ovation for Matt. Don't recall which one though. But anyway, I think Liam just appreciates Matt even aside from his own experience as a GM.
I've literally just made a comment praising this type of behaviour from Liam. He had done it a lot of times all the way from the first campaign to this episode (first time watching through). He seems a really good guy. And I agree that DMs(GMs) shouldn't seek or expect praise or appreciation but when it comes naturally it is a nice touch and small reward for how hard you can work.
I know! My whole party is critical role fans and the DM encorperated one of Jester's pamphlets into the game and that is how my rouge is mulitclassed as a cleric worshipping the traveler.

@@IFYOUCOULDFLY Beau does have some great moments, but spends a lot of time being an obnoxious, vicious, arrogant thug (as her character is intended to be). Nothing against Marisha but her character is pretty grating. Of course it's part of a good story to have characters you dislike. However, her euology for Molly was great, and her moment with Fjord after they murdered all the people a couple of episodes ago, and then the horror story thing. The proximity of those last two - and the fact that her wisdom is increasing - suggest some character development and improvement, which keeps things interesting.

If the group ever play hide and seek, Caleb is gonna be unbeatable, everybody will want to use spells and magic stuff to hide but he'll just detect it.
I don’t really think detect magic would be that great, it’s the ability to sense a magical aura around any VISIBLE creature or object (so invisibility would be kind of iffy) but the limitations of 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of Common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt obscuring it so if for example Nott would use some kind of spell she can easily just hide around a wall or something similar and the magic aura is obscured and or hard to pinpoint
@@bluearrowfox7444 Not just iffy. Both spells have been around since 1st Edition. Detect Magic doesn't work on Invisibility because that pretty much defeats the purpose. Though detect invisibility and true seeing exist but I'm unsure which spells Caleb has.
@@bluearrowfox7444 Yes and that fact and others make it very spoilery for me. Though in this case I'd have to take another look at those spells to gauge appropriate level which was a greater concern for me in either case.
It honestly kinda annoy me that Nott (who is supposed to be one of the smartest member of the party) decided to throw this info out there when they just saw Avantica become invisible.

Jester’s Journal - Day 1 in the Jungle: We survived the first skirmish-one that didn’t even concern us-by not following Beau’s tactical strategy. We should probably make a habit of ignoring her combat instincts.
The clerics of all people going outside on their own and then being ambushed reminded me of my very first D&D session. I was a guest player, so they were already in the middle of something. We were in a snake temple, and we were resting after a fight. Two players decided to go scouting around without the rest of us (who wanted to rest) and ended up falling into a trap. They were going to die for sure, so the DM asspulled a NPC coming to save them from their stupidity. Because it was a really stupid idea.

I've thought it multiple times but the moment with the 'T section' around 2:42:00 is a wonderful example of how pure hearted and kind Liam is. He does this a lot of times Matt messes something up slightly and people jump at him, he's so quick to say how wonderful a job matt does and to basically cut him some slack. It's always unnecessary because obviously the party know this and aren't actually attacking Matt per se, but it's still a nice insight into the kind of guy Liam is. He must be an excellent person to count as a friend.
I am 100% convinced Taelisin casted “eyes of the grave” because he recognized that Jamedi was just one letter remove from “Samedi” and was just waiting the whole session for a reason Caduceus would suspect the character was undead. Specially as a vampire:the masquerade player he must have clocked it immediately.
It's because Taliesin picked up on the fact that none of the bugs were bothering Jamedi. There wasn't some secret lore puzzle Taliesin figured out, he picked up on the "visual clues" Matt was describing in the scene.
Ever since Molly's death, Taliesin doesn't look like he's enjoying combat and is just really stressed the whole time, and it's making it really hard to watch the combat
I think he's just in character as Caduceus. Cad doesn't seem to like fighting and is more pacifistic. On top of that, Cad has barely left his home until now, so high stress situations aren't good for him

i thought matt called them on meta gaming.
Thank you, I scrolled down to find a comment about that. It's at 43:33 if anyone's interested.
She's gotta protect her fiery boy
That how i play my rogue
Momma Nott protecting her 6 babies
I love, though, how they all snap to when Matt gently scolds.
Hahahahs but fly angry bout the bad rolls That's why I love him
He's the one that bought them candy. Though he wasn't necessary at fault for causing the distraction.

fjord - writes throw away line in backstory about sailing
matt - writes huge sections of the campaign at sea with sea themes
I mean the party stole a pirate ship so what do you expect
The DM joy you get when you find something in the PCs story that will allow you to touch some random or otherwise out of the way lore, places and monsters ♡
The fun part is that it is due to Matt`s "neurotic" perfectionism: "OMG, Travis is an expert! What to do What to do if the topic comes up?!? " - Starts reading literature about the topic...
- And, yeah, they literally did not HAVE to raid the boat, by any means, and it came as quite a surprise.
It wasn't a small bit though... he seemingly died at sea (betreyed by a fellow) and was brought back by a fucking sea monster
Not expecting the seafairing arc to be in Season 1 of the announced animation, but looking forward to seeing this animated so that Fjord ACTUALLY knows what he’s doing with a vessel (while still being an awkward captain) instead of floundering through it. Poor Travis.
Caduceus talking to wildlife is my favorite thing. The fact that it just for flavour makes it even better.
Now I kinda want to know anyone else’s little “flavor” detail
Matt throwing shade about the others _still_ not having gotten Yasha's character sheet is my favorite
They deserve the shade 😅 when you know Ashley isn't there but Yasha is then you need her character deets 🤷♀️
It's awkward, because having everything on that D&D Beyond site actually makes it harder to play quickly in many respects, but they have to not mention that because of the sponsorship.
Matt also threw shade at them for opening candy
@ReboundSpirit not if Matt has started a campaign on the site. In that case he would have access to all their character sheets
Yes. It's hilarious the angry Dad vibes. "Well the the last time I wore your shoes I put them away." 😂😂😂😂
God, I love Caduceus. That detect undead spell was genius.
Seriously, what a great moment
my favourite moments are when the party learn things earlier than Matt planned because someone asked a random question
Technically, I'd say its more a great Taliesin-moment, but yes, a true genius moment!
I wonder how much of the story comes about because of them being curious about stuff and Matt thinking "but what if?" And stays up late prepping content that he will bring up in four or five sessions.
(First time watching this campaign) I think I was as excited as Travis was when that happened
At this point Caleb definitely has a hit list for everyone who killed his familiar.
Anybody else realise, if jester hadn’t gone with Cad, he would have been ambushed alone and would have possibly had to role a new character. I almost lost my baby caduceus!
Thē Zërø Çláñ
I reckon he would’ve still screamed for help actually. But yea, I cringe every time Cad is at low HP now.
The moment with the candy is hilarious. It's like an irl failed stealth role 😂
@cak01vej both and Matt roled high on his perception. 😂
@cak01vej But Matt's perception caught them
A teacher moment.
I love when Matt has to go a bit "teacher leading a class", its just a fun little moment of him dealing with a group of grown children XD

I have to be honest, I find it irritating that the character is just allowed to do it nonstop without anyone putting a stop to it. Some of the jokes just get old after a while. A lot of Jester's shtick stopped being cute and endearing a long time ago.
I recommend Where She Sleeps by Ginny Di. So on point both in character and accent
I prefer Jester and Caleb
@@robinnelsen7869 "...without anyone putting a stop to it"
As a DM, I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, yo.

The scene between Jester and Jumanji Costco made me giggle so had my coworker thought I was choking on my coffee or something. Also, their clusterfuck shenanigans "oh shit plan failed ABORT ABORT oh welp" are The Best.
Clay’s two small “help” made me laugh so hard because if it were any other characters those pleas would be so much more dramatic
No Actual owls where harm in the making of this DND session
2:02:30 i know travis is ginormous comparedly to the rest of the cast but then he does stuff like this and it blows my mind all over again
Technically, Lesser Restoration cures diseases, technically. It's in the RAW "You touch a creature and can end either one disease or one condition afflicting it." Disease OR condition. It lists conditions, but it should have saved Beau from the disease, too.

Matt: *Describes Yuan-ti hell-cat*
Travis: "I just peed a little"
I love Talisen, having said that I'm not sure how he manages to be so brilliant and stupid at the same time. Lmao. He should have known using light right after trying to literally hiding their camp because of surrounding creatures and enemies was going to get him targeted and in trouble. Having said -that- he handled it beautifully as he so often does. Love these guys and this show with every fiber of my being.
He is just playing Cad really well as it was stated previously that he has a 9 int.
I've played 2 clerics to lvl20. It's a steep learning curve with them. A lot of spells seem really useful in the moment but completely backfire
@@awesomeman8385this is very late but also this is a guy who is used to fighters. not denying any of tals dnd knowledge but if percy wanted to do something in a fight he fucking just went bang bang bang and forgot about his hex most of the time. so it’s fun to watch him make mistakes when trying to get used to spellcasting.
THANK GOD THE AUDIO IS BACK
The work they have done in this transferring process is AMAZING. Thank you very much, you did refine it a lot... and i never thought it needed to be polished!

@@MorinehtarTheBlue the wiki has a list of his spells (though it is updated so we don’t know the spells he had in this episode)
@@bluearrowfox7444 Yes and that fact and others make it very spoilery for me. Though in this case I'd have to take another look at those spells to gauge appropriate level which was a greater concern for me in either case.
yeah, he could just detect all the magical things that the mighty nein members possess. But I guess they can just leave it in a bag somewhere.

This episode seems to be the most 'real' game that I've seen these guys play. Those looks from Mr. Mercer when he wants to play the game, especially when he's in the middle of an explanation/description.
Nope, still not a D&D game. Not one person quoted Denis the Peasant or said "It's only a model" 😂
I love how smart Talisien seems to be and how well he plays Caduceus. Not everyone would be able to pull a character like that off, but Talisien does it perfectly. Just amazing!
Man alive I wish they did more All Work, No Play. Not only was it fun watching Sam and Liam just be mates, but it was also pretty great to see two 40odd fathers talk about what being a father is like and what they do to cope.
They just announced a second season of the show! Whoohoo!!
@@likaquijano5113 Right? I just saw and watched the trailer before I saw your comment. The downside is they are no longer facing each other so it is going to look a little awkward considering they are talking to each other rather than to an audience, but still, O'Brian and Reigle back in the saddle again.
Both of them are working professionals living in/near LA as well so the time management aspect is also impressive to me.
Beau’s horror story analogy to Fjord was actually god-tier
@Kel'Thuzad She never misses a chance to put words into Calebs mouth, and create artificial drama, just to talk about how she doesn't like authority
It’s actually really good DM advice.
@Kel'Thuzad big surprise, CR fans being toxic dicks. It's a wonder they even continue to stream their sessions.
Marisha is the toxic one lol 99% of people wouldn't be able to put up with her
It's god-tier meta gaming. Which is what she's best at.
Just seeing Travis eyeball that candy box after getting caught is cracking me up

Any moments I missed? Feel free to post them here. Is it Thursday yet?
Thanks for this!
Caleb's "eeeyyyyy" and Jester describing how the bug carried the piece of bread up the stairs were my favorite part of this episode XD
I’m sure it’d be less stressful if their initial Cleric didn’t have an aversion to healing.
I think he's just in character as Caduceus. Cad doesn't seem to like fighting and is more pacifistic. On top of that, Cad has barely left his home until now, so high stress situations aren't good for him
@@CunningLingu1sttrickery domain. Light and life are the classic healing domains. Others are fine too. But trickery, death, etc... Clerics get so many spells. Healing is a small subset
