Operation Crossfire may well be a world first - a wargame played on many tables around the world simultaneously, with two overall commanders basing their decisions on the e-mails sent to them during the game. What am I letting myself in for? Plenty of work, that's for sure.
N.B. Closing date for applications to be involved has now passed! Thanks to all those who agreed to take part, sorry if you missed out.
With regard to figure scale: all scales work for Crossfire. I use 1/72nd scale, but others happily use 1/300th, 1/32nd and everything in between (6mm to 55mm figures).

This sounds brilliant, would love to see a Napoleonic or Mid 1800's setting, sending information with emails like runners sending messages :D
Oh man, this sounds awesome. Shame I'm here over a year too late xD Hopefully it happens again!
TheMad Gerk Possibly! I'm a newcomer to the game though, so I'd still have to learn.
2 years. I am trying to find people to do this with, are you one of those interested still? discord.gg/jCYW9X
LUCKELEO I certainly am.
@@CraftQueenJr lovely! I'll give you the link to our discord channel and you can then join us in our campaign that we play every weekend. discord.gg/av9mpzh
@@commissarluke2898 I honestly prefer bolt action and would highly recommend it to anyone into bolt action, you can use troops of any scale in it not just the ones warlord games makes btw
Your room is still messy.
...
I SHALL NOT RELENT.
Get a screen grab, annotated it, and send me it pointing out the mess, for I see none.
Lindybeige Lol I have ZERO "room to talk" as they say, but the boxes in the bottom left corner and the box between the dresser and bookshelf also the stuff on top of the dresser are all a bit disorganized.
I stress again that I am no clean freak but I just wanted to get in on this haha
The very existence of this concept gets my inner child giddy and giggly, and my outer child excited and elated, and my outer bear all bear-like because I am a bear.
***** Yes.
I'd really love to get into a wargame like this if I knew anyone who'd be interested in it.
... Or if I could afford the models.
You don't need fancy models. Card would do. A couple of boxes of plastic 1/72nd would do.
You're right, but a table full of nicely painted miniatures has always been a big part of the draw for wargaming to me since I spent two or three years playing 40K as a kid.
Always been meaning to look into the hobby more since then but there's not much of a community for it where I live. I always figured that it's something I'd get involved with if were to go live in Britain for a few years, where it seems way more active.
You are an ambitiously geeky man, sir, and I for one, salute your efforts.
Nobody will read this.. but I used to play the old wargame research group WW2 rules, and made dozens of ruined buildings and 1/76 scale vehicles out of cardboard.. The memories came flooding back seeing this video. I will soon finish my own rules version, started in 1979. It will be worth the wait. BTW, the satisfaction when using your own cardboard vehicles is immense.
hello loyd!
i am playing Bolt Action since a few weeks now, your game look pretty similar.
I like your channel very much! and i am looking forward for more of your humor.
greetings from Bavaria
Tobi
Sounds like a brilliant idea. It could potentially inspire other board game events in the future!
I really like the idea of having a commander who only knows what he's told choosing what resources to give. It will both be fun as well as be a good experiment to see how people can take up such a position and how it would work. It would definitely be a discussing topic to go along with the arguments about armchair generals etc.
Sadly I won't be able to join in myself though, but would be interested to see how it goes.
How about a smartphone app for crossfire?
My dad has a ton of old ww2 model kits from the 70s and up. lol, I just might try this.
how did it go
Please tell me this will be recorded/livestreamed somewhere... please? :D
Would love to know what goes down.
I for one will not likely be able to participate, but I would be glad to see some form documentation!
I'd like to see the record of what the commanders experience.
Even better if the record is annotated with what is _really_ happening at the tables...that would add an awareness of the fog of war....
It would definitely be very interesting to watch the action, both the table-top guys and the commanders :)
That would require a LOT of webcams! I don't know how good a spectator sport this would make, but then I was amazed when a friend went to a cinema to watch a video game tournament.
You are a great man and an inspiration to us all.
Huzzah!
Damn, that´s a great idea!
I´ve ran a campaign or two with WH40k which were longer / larger, but your idea was... Well, quite many magnitudes larger.
Really great idea!
Best of luck! It sounds fun and intriguing, and I hope it works.
Dude, that first event sounds totally awesome :)
So does the planned event as well.
Are you kidding me, a war gaming event in New Zealand and I miss it
The world crossfire day sounded like a fun and great idea, my brother and I did similar things like that in custom campaigns with 40k back when we were younger. Operation Crossfire sounds also fun.
I was looking for simple ww2 rules for a long time, your videos made me take the plunge on Crossfire.
Great idea! All the best with it.
This is a brilliant concept. If only I had all of the resources necessary to take part in it.
i think you (Lindybeige) got the point of playing games: community. playing with/against other plays isn't alway fun, but it's the human lelemant that makes the game feel alive :)
This sounds like a fantastic idea, and a game I could really get into. I doubt I'll be able to get familiar with the rules (not to mention find opponents) in time for the event, depending on how soon you plan on hosting it, but I would definitely like to participate in events like this in the future.
This is brilliant. If I had the time I would be all over this. One day I'll meet you and you'll buy me ice cream and we'll talk about things and stuff and junk and I'll call you "history dad".
I think that this is a BRILLIANT idea. I would love to be a part, but work is in the way.
The commander mechanics remind me heavily of Kriegspiel - most definitely a good thing.
Great idea. Good luck!
The most beige of wars.
As a long running Crossfire fan and someone well versed with all your brilliant Crossfire resources I am really looking forward to this coming off!
Is there any news about when it might be happening? I couldn't see anything on your website but want to get planning.
While I probably won't join in on this I cannot wait to hear/see how it turns out.
This sounds awesome!
WOW!!! This sounds amazing!!!
This is so brilliant
It's a very clever idea. I have a pdf copy of the old Crossfire rules but I'm very happy to hear they are in print again. I'll have to try and order it once I get some money in the bank. On the downside my local gaming community has very narrow interests when it comes to wargaming. About the only historicals people play are Flames of War and Bolt Action. The latter is played exclusively in 28mm (I went big into 1/72 scale so I'm screwed). Flames of War just isn't all that good but I do have Battlegroup Kursk on order and may be able to get someone to try it out.
FoW figures are nice, though, and suitable for Crossfire.
Lindybeige Mine are 4 per base. I suppose I could use casualty caps to indicate losses.
This sounds like a lot of fun. I'd like to participate if there's . . . .
Oh, wait. This happened five years ago.
Oh, well . . . .
Kudos for creating asymmetrical objectives. That's the way to do it.
Lindybeige, "what is best in life?"
A game of strategy you say? An organised event? Tommies and Jerry duking it out?
Allow me to grab a copy of the rules... somehow.
Sounds great, wish could play this with you D:
Neat idea. I've 1/128th of a mind to do it using lego.
Brilliant! Hope it works well.
Some of us would really like to see you play a whole game to pick up the game. :)
Wonderful! Would love to be involved some time in the future... Sounds amazing...
Well we do Play online crossfire every weekend you're welcome to join us.
discord.gg/av9mpzh
wonderful idea.
Looks interesting. I've passed the details onto a friend who is more likely than me to arrange these things.
Love your videos :) could you give us a brief over view of tank rules please :)
It sounds awesome
I may just need to check this out.
Is that a copy of Manderin in the background, I loved that as a kid!
bindyleige!
There seem to be a lot of people willing to play that can't find partners to play against...
Some of you should pair up and play over Skype. Just match terrain and point webcams at your tables.
Nice idea, but it introduces a lot more ways for things to go wrong.
@@umutemre26 we already do.
Is there anywhere where I can get the rules in a .dpf format because I can't buy them in my country ?
It took about ten instances, of the word tiger before I realized that tiger meant tank and not cat.
This guy is a weapon /Battlefield /tank ‘History fanatical dude, holyf##K
I couldn't take part even if I wanted to, however, I think the idea sounds fascinating. Would you be able to make a video detailing how it goes?
There surely shall be an aftermath video, yes.
this sounds like soooo much fun, unfortunately I don't have the time to learn the game and participate :( maybe next year :D
This seems really great but I imagine the overhead of getting set up for even a bare bones functional map would be rather costly.
I don't have a gun so can I deal with logistics or factory work to build munitions?
Email is a bit dated for quick communication. Instant messaging might be a better alternative, perhaps via Skype or Yahoo.
I've never played a game like D&D or runequest or Crossfire but your videos have made me kinda want to start playing corssfire and MAYBE runequest... If that's what its called.
I really want this to happen again
It took me way too long to realise the tiger was a tank and not the animal... i'm feeling really dumb right now
I really like this idea.
please, for the love of god, make an episode of this game you propose
CROSSFIRE HAS BEEN REPRINTED!!!!!! JOY!
The thought occurs that a smart commander would bring a few friends along to manage the flow of information from his subordinates, and encourage said subordinates on his side to do likewise so they can focus on commanding and let someone else do the reporting. Commander's got to have a command staff, no?
Pyro Fennec That#s pretty much what occured almost immediately to me, too. And then it occurred to me that being that Lieutenant must be pretty boring.
Where might I find myself one of this game boards and pieces? Do I have to buy the supplies and build the pieces?
This is really great. I would love to possibly get involved in this!
Well we do Play online crossfire every weekend you're welcome to join us.

@@commissarluke2898 Are you still active?
Wish I could've been a part of this. Just recently found this and have dragged all my friends into it. Please consider hosting something similar again soon. Side question, where did you get your mini figures?
Been two years but you still interested in trying it out? discord.gg/jCYW9X
Munchkin in the background, for the win
Wow. Parts of this are akin to how some actual military wargaming is done.
Both times you have done this subject i read "Wargaming" and think of something totally different.
I think this would have been a much less stressful event for all parties if you played longer, for example, say four days.
That way you could have time to read all the emails, and the commanders could give orders better, and players from the US and Canada could have participated on their own time.
The stress is part of the game However. If one had all the time in the world to think' then the game loses the realism that was so carefully preserved.
Wish things like this were still made
We still do it and play online crossfire every weekend. discord.gg/av9mpzh
very clever!
You should do this again!
please do this again, or the version that isn't simultaneous at least! I really wanna do it!
+Loften Henderson would you be willing to participate in a smaller version of this?
TheMad Gerk yes! just depends on when
You choose
how much smaller do you mean?
Not like 45 people. Like 10 to 15. Maybe even 20ish. Is that alright with you?
3:33 Lol, just like General Montgomery whining for supplies and such.
just so you know, there is an app called Zello, it turns your phones into walkie talkies, just imagine the possibilities
How did you get 1 dislike?
the guy who lost the game :P
holly shit that sounds like a great idea have you thought about kick starting such an idea into a online browser based game with simple sprite art ?
Will each "side" have an opportunity for grand-tactical planning with the commander assigning them objectives? Or will you simply have scenarios for each team?
If the Germans don't rescue the Tiger they get a penalty from PETA annoying them for the rest of the game.
Oh, Lindy, NO! _MUNCHKIN?_
I thought you was cool, man.
I wonder how well Roll20 would work for this sort of thing.
how can u make sure they dont just email while the other guys clock is ticking? just by honour?
The other guy can see! Using just one computer would help too, I suppose.
ah right, my bad.
Man, wish I could play in that tournament, but sadly I wouldn't know the rules, wouldn't have anyone to play with and I can't really travel to play :(
I actually ordered the book. Don't really have anybody to play with though. I don't think.
Would it be possible for you to make a video (or series of) of you playing a full game?
could a player have an other person in the room emaling the commander? cus i think that would help alot
do you have a video of the result?
+Phil V Operation Crossfire Aftermath.
+The Arctic Gamer this is brilliant he should make it into an online war game
Have you ever considered doing this again? I would be very pleased to join in something like this again. As a fan of Warhammer 40k tabletop this interests me VERY much.
Not join something like this again. Join something if this happens again.
please do this again
Well, the issue is, you're not going to know what the results on diffrent tables are either if they don't send emails to you, so you operate with as much information as the "headquaters".
I plan to have umpires update me independently. Each player, though, has incentives to report both failures and successes, since the overall commanders can act only on such info. Messages can go both ways also, so they can receive requests for information, and news of reinforcements and the like.
I commend your ownership of Munchkin!
This sounds like a great idea. I think the effort is going to melt your brain, and possibly those of your players as well, but a great idea nonetheless.
I feel like you'd need a rather large staff
Will there be a 2015 event
cool idea but i guess its finding 2 people close enough to each other with the time etc because you need two people round the board i guess ?
Yes, min two, and three would be better (one to umpire).
i of course wouldn't have anyone to play with im interested but i doubt anyone would want a rookie to train :P
