This arc was written probably in 1998, back then (and even now a little) japanese were very biased against tatoos, they were considered a Yakusa(japanese mob) thing, so people with tatoos usually was shady (its changing in the latest years).
But Usopp isnt being an ashole here, its just Oda's way to tell (japanese) kids, "dont judge by looks" a person with tatoos can be a good person too.
It's funny to think that "not all tattoo people are bad" was considered a controversial take in 90's japan xD
Sadly enough a future VA in one piece was fired for showing pics of his tattoos... Well his asshole tattoos... He was seen as a bad influence for kids

Well Each Warlord is Strong but Just like Everyone Their Strength is Varied and Depending on Long They Live and Their Conditioning They can either Plateau or Continue to Get Stronger as Mihawk Clearly Does
Tbf that was probably Oda underestimating the Warlords. He only expected the story to go for like 5 or so years.
Government authorized pirates are actually a real thing, back in the days some pirates would receive a 《Letter Of Marque》making them "legal pirates" they are also known as Privateer or Corsair! They were considered somewhat of heroes in their own countries but remained pirates and outlaws in the eyes of others since they still attacked other ships and committed crimes.
One Piece not only keep piracy concepts from our world and history but also takes a lot of real life pirates and put them in the show so it's really cool :)

Holy shit, I forgot Nami actually *gave* that kid money. That's such a surprising move and really tells us something's off.
Her greatest loves, The crew, Children, navigation, tangerines, and money in that order.
She has strong levels of empathy for children going through tough backstories such as herself. She's got a rough exterior but she's one of the biggest softies on the crew when it comes down to it

3:48 Was just about to be surprised at how Luffy wrote Nami correctly, then I realised it's in the wrong alphabet. Should be ナミ. He wrote it in hiragana, which is the first alphabet kids learn, so it's a nice way to reflect how he is a bit clueless, but still does remember her name right at the same time, since he never miscalls friends. This was quite genius.

The tattoo thing is part of Japanese culture - those who have tattoos are frequently looked down upon as being 'uncivilized' and associated with the yakuza.

Everybody has that one arc in the show where they now it’s not everybody else’s favorite arc or anything but to that one person it’s there absolutely favorite - definition of a simp arc…. Arlong park is my simp arc
I'm confused now. I don't remember the message behind Luffy vs. Kuro being "powers don't matter; resolve matters." That sounds more like Luffy vs. Krieg to me, since it reminds me of Zeff talking about a person's "spear of determination" or something like that. Wasn't Luffy vs. Kuro more about what a proper pirate should be? One who seeks adventure instead of exploiting innocent people?

A cornerstone of that was also that you can't quit being a pirate since it's about your will
Luffy vs Kuro is about how Kuro was a coward who didn't want to 'play the game' the right way, preferring a complicated and ultimately pointless scheme to disappear forever so he could be seen as a common rich man rather than an infamous pirate. He didn't have the resolve Luffy does to be a real pirate and captain, caring for his crew and being honest about his goals.

Tattoos are seen as a taboo in Japan cause they’re associated with the Japanese mafia like the Yakuzas who are one of the few people who actually have them, making them automatically recognizable among the others. That’s why I’m Japan having a tattoo = being pretty much a criminal lol

Dont you love rewatching and finding out/noticing things you missed last time that make the series that much more epic. Seemingly small tidbits here and there you dont notice until hundreds of episodes later i might add too. Like little easter eggs hidden and you feel so giddy finding them like getting those achievements in games that you didnt know about or took so long to find.
There is some kind of irony you just watch arlong in arlong park arc . And i just watch arlong in fisherman island arc. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sanji acts like that with every pretty face, Nami's just the first one he sees that really catches his eye in that way. that being said Arlong Park here we are, this is usually what cements somebody as a One Piece fan.

5:11 As you might've gathered, all Fishmen are based on actual marine life. Arlong being a Sawshark Fishman and Hatchi being an Octopus Fishman (even though octopi aren't fish) are obvious. Kuroobi, the blue one, is a Ray Fishman, and the one with the lips, Chew (or Choo) is a Smelt-Whiting Fishman.
It's a species (or maybe even a genus or a family, I'm no taxonomy scientician) of fish native to the indo-pacific region, and many have these elongated snouts, although not to the extent the guy has. Based on exactly zero research, I'd wager a guess they're as prominent in Far-East Asia as mackerel are on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, so someone who lives there (aka the actual target demographic) would probably see the resemblance.
Sanji popping Momoo after holding out food for him is why I have trust issues. 😂😂

this arc is known as the litmus test for if one is to continue watching One Piece or not. Some people found the pacing slow before this arc, but once they watched this, they said they were one piece fans for LIFE. The fact that you have such energetic and positive reactions from the very beginning makes me SOOO excited for you because it just gets wilder and better and it's the most amazing tv show ride I've ever been through

Usopp's comment about Nojiko's tattoos is kind of inconsiderate but makes sense given that this is a japanese anime (and tattoos in japan as far as I know are very tightly connected to criminals) and that this chapter is adapting material from 1998 (and was first broadcast on the year 2000) when tattoos weren't a common thing.
