Having read both your books and understood the background you are from this song is very poignant and meaningful. It could be relevant to anywhere in the world that has saw financial and social decline over time.....

When I worked at Holdens in the late 80s when Working Class Man was on the radio there would be a huge roar all the workers would be cheering

There is no bigger frustration than having to drive an hour and a half to another town to go to work, while a disused dairy factory sits in the middle of my town.

I see the song expresses a failure in leadership. The result being the small man left high and dry.

It's a shame when you made it big you buggered off and left it telling young Elizabeth people to get out of Elizabeth as soon as you can. But I'm glad you made some money out of the real working class people that put in 30 years at GMH and were then thrown on the scrap heap!

When Troy was growing up in the Clarence Valley, Peter’s Ice cream, the match factory, and eventually the brewery all closed down. The railway which was central to Grafton culled its work force, the abattoirs shut and reopened and some timber mills closed. Like Elizabeth, the Clarence Valley was rated very high as a disadvantaged place for the population. Not until watching this here on UA-cam did I know that Troy had written the song. I can see why he got it so right.
