- This video will show you how to replace a hydrostatic drive belt on a Toro Timecutter zero turn lawnmower. This repair is done with with 4 basic tools and does not require jacks or impact wrenches. This technique is especially useful when you have to repair the lawn mower in the field. Here is the link for a detailed service manual. www.homedepot.c...
You saved the day! Yes its a pain but without your video I am not sure I could have figured it out. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! You saved me a bunch of time and some headache. Drive belt slipped off, now I’m trying to put it back on.
Nobody actually shows the belt being put on it’s always magically on when the video cuts to it. Thanks a lot.
That's because they all suck
Thanks for the diagram you drew sir
I don't understand why the one idler pulley is made of hard plastic not metal like the rest? Mine was absolutely destroyed...good vid
Yeah, I thought the same thing. Take Care
Thank you! This was a great video and was literally the only instructional information I could find on this. You're a life saver. I would have had to drive this to a repair center 3 hours away without this video.
I would be so screwed if people like you didn’t make videos like this. I can read a manual 10 times and never wrap my head around the repair. Being a visual learner, this made it easy.
Thanks, man! Had a customer come in with a beater Toro 50" SS5000...one (of the many) problem was it had been sitting for a couple years...busted drive belt, idler pulley was melted and frozen up. I pulled the belt routing off the 'net, but it was at a weird angle and didn't immediately make sense. You saved me some time today! Just got done, drives fine. These have a high and low speed setting...pretty weird man (I don't see Toros often).
Had to pull the clutch, tear it down and clean it up as well, since it was so rusted up inside, when they would pull the PTO switch, it would pop a fuse. Because it was overdrawing amps (as the clutch plate was sticking), it melted down the wiring from the clutch back to the starter solenoid...so had to re-wire that.
Pro-Tip Hint (as you saved me time and I appreciate it, so here is something you may not know): On the clutches...you can drop them, grind off the rivets, pull the brake shoes (sandwich of shoes and magnets) off the top case, if it has a center metal stop (in-between the shoes) take out that rivet, then tear down the clutch. The bottom just pops out of the top case, and the clutch plate as well. Clean up all your surfaces as best you can (not to worry, it will burnish itself as well) because rust stops/diffuses magnetic fields and will make the clutch plate stick before it locks in...draw so much amperage it will either burn all the wiring, or smoke out the field coil in the top of the clutch. Replace rivets with some 5/16" inch bolts long enough you can put a nut on the backside and peen the bolt inside the nut.
Pro-Tip Hint #2: If your clutch is slipping, do your tear down like usual...but on the center shaft where it all layers together, there is a tiny ring on the top lip of the center shaft (if it's a Warner clutch). So your top clutch bellhousing has your field coil and a shaft bearing, the bottom has the clutch face and bottom bell housing + bearing and an adapter for your bolt, but also...that center shaft.
Just grind off that tiny ring on top of the center shaft, so it sits just a few thousandths deeper into the top case & bearing. VOILA! A tight clutch instantly. (As sometimes the clutch plate gets wore down thanks to dirt, dust, trash, rust, etc....or the field coil starts to get weaker with age.)
You just saved yourself $150 (now, 2022 prices).
Awesome video. I don't think we could have done this without your help. Your little map of the belt configuration save me tons of time. You should be paid a commission by TORO as they should provide these types of videos for their customers. Hard to believe TORO does not put the belt configuration for the drive belt in the owner's manual. hank you!
AWESOME VIDEO!! Great job showing the hard-to-see places!
Question... My Toro Timecutter has stopped moving forward or backward... the blades spin & the engine runs but it will not move. It looks like all the belts are on. The mower is only a little over a year old... any ideas?
Thanks a lot. I was in the tall weeds too, and only had to put the belt back on without removing the PTO, but this video was a huge help!
I'm in the exact same situation
I hope this my situation!
I appreciate that you took the time and effort to produce this instructional video. Thanks very much.
Thank you for such an informative video. Ive renames my mower “The Antichrist”. It’s been a disappointment since new. Ive only done 135 hours, been religious with oil changes and the bitch has spent more time getting repaired than doing the job. Instead of calling it the Timecutter, they should have called it the time waster…
rather than go through all that pipe wrench business i find it WAY easier to just take the 1 bolt out of that holder bracket and loosen the other one and that part that was keeping you from putting the belt on is now able to be swung right out of the way. no harbor freight tools needed. but thank you for the belt routing diagram. Then again there is always more than one way to skin a cat
Excellent job! You told me everything I needed to know and nothing I didn't need. Very to the point. Explained everything well. Thank you so much. Great information video 👍
My idler pulley assembly burned up and fell apart so after fixing it and reattaching it, I watched this video to put the belt back on. Helpful video. One note (for my application), was that the belt had to be above the idler assembly before tightening the assembly. I had to loosen the idler to get the belt above it. I didn’t have to remove the pto but maybe I should have replaced the old belt while I serviced it. The access to the belts is very limited especially for larger hands. It’s more of a pain in the ass than I expected.
Thank you so much for making this video, you are a great blessing for all your help❤
Could you not just take the spring on tension pulley off, install belt and put the spring back on ?
Hey sir, just wanted to say thank you. If it wasn't for this video, I'd have had to take it to the shop.
On mine, I found out, it wasn't the belt that broke. It was the tensioner spring! Same operation, though.
Maybe remove PTO stabilizer bracket instead of PTO2 bolts?
I just wanted to also say thank you for your excellent video. It was exactly what I needed.
It was also a help when you showed the routing and the part numbers that would be needed.
Great instructional video! Just did my own repair and one additional recommendation that I would provide to get a new belt on is to loosen the bracket for the idler pulley and then slip the belt onto it and tighten afterwards. Thanks for this video!
Hopefully you can respond to this comment. I need an answer.
Yesterday I just had 2 engine mounting bolts snap and my engine shifted about 2 inches. After removing the other two mounting bolts I still couldn't move the engine back in place. I expect it to be because of the tension the belt has on it.
Question: do you know if I have to do everything on your video or is there a way to loosen it enough for me to shift the motor back in place?
Thank you! Yes a field instruction is very helpful. I like how you get right to the point and don’t babble around on anything but the task at hand. You have a real knack for explaining this. I’m amazed how clean everything is where mine is fairly dirty. The fumes got to me and I quit before finishing. Can’t wait to get back in there today and thanks to your explanation, I feel more confident. Thanks again. Keep up the good work. 🤙🏻
With my mower, the idler pulley melted which merely allowed the belt to fall out of the track. Though I didn't have to replace my belt, this was a very helpful video for understanding how things work and also learning tips on routing the belt. Thank you and God bless!
Thank you, this video was way better understanding than others I have watched. Hopefully I can get it fixed today. Belt just got pushed off not broken though.
Hey Albert, this is semi-related, but a bit off-topic. I'm pretty new with my Timecutter, and I keep blowing deck belts. I figured it was because I'm hitting grass that's too tall, but it seems odd that this mower would struggle so much with that. I've heard that it may be due to dull blades struggling to cut the grass, causing the deck belt to go slack and then grab real quick. Do you have any thoughts on what's going on with it? I've got less than 30 hours on the mower and I've replaced the belt four times. It's getting old!
Thank you. This is “real bear”! Got that right brother. Awesome hi IQ explanation.
A remarkable resource of information on a very specific job! Watching this video helped me to diagnose the issue with my mower, and saved me hours (perhaps tens of hours) swapping out the belt. I found absolutely no flaw with the advice and instruction given, and I'm thrilled to have come across this video. Thanks, Albert. You did me a solid by posting this one.
If I had a couple 100 grand Albert, It go straight to ya in a big box with a note that says, " Sorry Mr. S. for the sudden change of routine. sHALOm aMEn blessing brotherman yes it does and did : will let you know how EEt goes
Best video I've seen on the subject!!👏👏
Question; I got a z4200 with a snapped main drive belt on trade a couple days ago. I've already got the deck off, but I'm guessing I'm still gonna have to take off that Electric clutch? pulley under the engine toward the back to be able to loop a new belt around the top pulley of that same bolt?
Also, is this a common occurrence? Old belt doesn't look too worn out, it literally snapped in half. I'm getting suspicious that one of the pulleys locked up or similar causing the belt to break in the first place?
Any input appreciated.
TYVM!👍🏼
-Chris
I’m under my mower out in a field right now. Threw the belt - a branch got up in there. Figuring it out - your video is a ton of help! Thx
After action report: it took about an hour once I figured how to do it. I tried leaving the PTO on - no go. You are right, it needs to come off. The belt got all twisted up and I needed to pull it out and start over. The belt is 5 years old, I think I’ll put a new one on up in the garage this fall. Great video - it really helped me out.
SAME!!
Thank you ……my belt hasn’t broken. If I had a spare would it go bad……my toro timecutter is four years old…or just buy one when it goes bad
If you just drop the PTO locking bracket you don't need to drop the PTO. You still need to disconnect the PTO control wire.
Thanks mate! Your video helped me diagnose the drive belt had slipped off on my Timecutter Z4202. Now to just order a new one and get stuck in.
Thanks! I didn’t know there was a drive belt either until this morning, after retrieving my SWX 5050 with my wife and my Quad Bike. My belt isn’t broken, it’s just come off. Now I’ll attempt to put it back on! 😀
your drawn diagram the idler pulley is on the opposite side of the manuals diagram. but thanks for showing the manual...
Thanks so much
You make is sound so easy
Mine just jumped or something
But I’m going to replace the belt
Mahalo for the details
Now to mystery why the belt failed on a run 10 times out started squeaking a bit then squeezed smoked and failed
Awesome video and like you didn't even know I had this belt. Toro is full of crap not putting this in the manual always wanting everyone to spend money at a dealer. Easy fix and used an impact to undo the 5/8 bolt without a pipe wrench. Thanks!
I have a 2017 timecutter 60”. There were some differences but mostly the same. Didn’t have to unplug my pto wire. Had to loosen tensioner pulley arm for clearance. Thanks for helping me get started.
Here I am with the broken lawnmower. Maybe same one. Please save me Albert. Project Saturday AM.
Thank you for the video. Very accurate. It's always nice to see somebody do it first. I'm a Hands-On guy not reading out of a book guy. I had two routing through the minor manual they give you with the mower. Like I said it's nice to see somebody do it.
Your video helped me fix it, I had a piece of gravel stuck in the drive pulley turned it backward and it fell out, thank you.
Does this belt diagram, also apply to the Toro 50" mower? I have a 75750 Timecutter, and my son drove over a stick and wrapped it up in the belt, which slipped off. If I follow your video, will it tear up my belt or should it be operable after everything?
I have the 50" Timecutter. Yes the video is accurate for this machine as well, I did mine in about an hour due to my own ignorance, but now I'm sure I could do it in 10 minutes any additional times.
I have one problem. This is an excellent video. I have a 50" deck on a Timecutter My Ride. I cannot figure how to get the new belt over the tensioner pully. The spring is off, but I cannot get the belt over the back pully and having no luck taking that pully off to get it done.
Hi, thank you so much for your helpful video! I was able to remove PTO and install a new drive belt. Wondering if you would know why the Flat idler pulley next to PTO clutch looks melted/burned by belt? Perhaps worn tension spring issue?
Thank you for posting the only video I found on the belt! I have 3 points to make now that I am complete putting mine back on. The blade belt pulley electric wire should just be left on and set that PTO on the diff plate. The transmission pulley is a big hazard! It fell off unexpectedly once I had removed the PTO and begun working. As I elevated the mower 2 feet, that heavy pulley could have broke teeth or my nose or eyes, hope folks read this put the bolt back in while messing with the belt to prevent this. Lastly, your video spends only a few seconds brushing over the actual view of the belt routing, this was not long enough or even a full view of the pulleys for me (a newbie to this task) to grasp the routing even with pause. I recommend a wide angle, more time showing the belt route. I really appreciated your video 100%! Please accept my comment as what would make it more helpful to a new and perhaps dumb, person to the task!
I remove the the metal plate that stops the pto clutch and slide the belt right over the pto not sure why everyone removes the pto? I must have a updated toro timecutter I suppose glad mines different that looks like a pita!
Why would the drive belt come off in the first place? This is the second time in maybe 2 years.
Thanks for the video. I have a 42" model 74711 that just ate the belt and threw the tensioning spring somewhere. I can't find a belt routing diagram for my model anywhere but did find the one you used. Everything on my mower under there looks exactly like yours with respect to the pulleys and idlers. Do you think the belt route is the same? It just seems that the way you put it on is the logical way it would have to be to get the tension and have the v facing the big pulleys. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Under the "show more" you'll find a genuine downloadable Toro service manual. It should help. The grief I foresee is getting the mower lifted as needed to get better access to the hydro drive belt. You say it isn't necessary but I'm and larger, older guy. I sort of feel I may need to.
I'm 65 and a larger guy so I think you'll be fine. Take care
This is the only video that shows the idler belt replacement that I can find. Great video. Got a couple printoffs just in case I ever have to replace mine again!
Didn't have to drop anything but thanks for the diagram... great video
Thanks man! Your video saved me a lot of money and helped me out of a big bind. My drive belt broke on the back side of my property. My lawn mower was stuck at the bottom of a big hill and there was no pushing it back to the house. Your instructions were spot on and the job was much easier than expected. The belt configuration was confusing, but I downloaded the manual from the link you provided and got it figured out. Thanks again for posting this video. Take Care and Stay Safe.
What kind of mower do you have? I have a zero turn toro 75751 and my belt came off today.

Thanks very much. This is super helpful.
Thanks! Really helped. Used steel S-hook from a rubber bungee for putting the spring back on made it a breeze.
Thank you for this video. This is the only one I have seen online. I am not skilled it mechanics so this really is a huge help. I am going to attempt it this week.
Thank you so much for your time making this video! I'm at the point jumping for joy finding this video I'm ready to make a donation
1000% for electrical connector removal.
Thnks😊
Albert, thank you for taking time to make your very good video.
Thanks! You answered all the sticky issues I had trying to take this thing apart. Especially the power plug and the bolt removal.
Thank you so much for saving my day.Great video
I sure wish you'd shown a more clear view of the routing
Thank you so much I must have played this video 10 times to get the routing correct but I did not take off the electric line just pushed the Center Closer to the mower deck out of my way I did jack it up higher on car ramps to get under it to better put the Center back on a real bear too!! Thank you again for this video also get the oem belt went to my local auto parts and matched up a belt that did not work at all way too tight save the aggravation and get the oem part!! A good shot of the belt installed with all pullys visible would be a nice addition to this but again thanks so much this saved me some $$$ and I learned I can do it myself! Pain in the butt but I did it!!! Thanks
Hiya. Thanks. I've had a Toro Timecutter for over 10 years. I've done all kind of repair's to it, including welding the deck up and re bracing. Anyhoo. I always just accepted the dang thing won't free wheel. Well you can teach an ole dawg new tricks because I just learned how to get it to freewheel watching your video. WOW Thanks! I feel so Dum.
Thank you! I have a Timecutter MX 5475 (model 75745) and just drove it out of my shop and about 15 feet away it stopped moving. No loud noises, engine still ruining, blades still turning, just wouldn’t move anywhere. Got it engaged and pushed back in the shop. Lifted the rear onto ramps and saw the belt up in there off its pulleys. This brand new mower has only been used to mow an acre for one full season and 1 mow this season. This was going to be my second. The belt doesn't even look that bad. It just looks like it jumped off. I’m hoping to use your video tomorrow to see if I can get it back on. My owners manual under troubleshooting called it a traction belt and said call service…really…REALLY TORO!
Wow I just downloaded the 2011-2013 Service Manual you linked to. I also went to the Toro site and downloaded all the manuals for my 2021 model mower. The photos and diagrams are far less useful that those shown in the earlier manual. In your manual PDF page 64, Section 5-6 is the diagram on how the belt path goes on all the pulleys. In the newer manual it just shows a partial exploded diagram and doesn’t really make clear the belt path to follow. The photos are also just small cropped images. How lazy is that?
Thank you for this video. This is the only one I have seen online. I tried it today and it was just the way you said it would be. I had to lift it up so I could get my impact wrench under it. After that everything went smooth. Could not have done it with out this video, Thanks Again
super informative! thank you!!!
Thanks for the play by play. It was a big help.
So it has 2 belts, the drive belt and what is the other one called ?
First video I have ever thumbed up. Thank you so much. You were a huge help and I appreciate you.
Thank you Sir, you are a blessing! Great instruction and video!
Albert, thanks for the great video. The portion showing the process of reinstalling a new belt was awesome, especially since my belt broke off. In my opinion, this was the best video I have seen, very detailed. I can not resist, the folks with condescending remarks and proof of their arrogance, why are they watching this video? I consider these type people as thugs, useless to society. May you have a blessed day, everyday! 👍👏🏻👏🏻💫💫
Thanks for the help. I did not know about the drive belt also or the need how to move the little levers to allow it to move. Great help. I raised up the front first instead of the back.
Thank you sir I'm sure you saved me time and hassle
This video was Great ! Thank you very ...
Thanks for the info. This way made the job easier than I thought it would be.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW EASY YOU'LL MAKE IT SEE IT 🤟🤟
Very good video, I have a toro tc Z5030 my Tran release is on the side, anyway mine will not turn right
If I work the release it will try but not engage. Is their anyway to check the fluid, and add it if it is needed?
I have checked online I can’t find a repair manual like u have were can I find one.
Again thanks
Mine won't turn rite either , ever fix the problem
Do you have a model number for the belt or a link where i can get the right one?
Thayyanks fur thu infurmayshun
Do u know the part number for this sa5000 time cutter drive belt
SS5000
Very good this is hard damn belt
Great video. Oh so clear. Thank you.
Works great, fast delivery
I repeat every other person’s sentiments below . Please put a donation payment link so I can swing $10 your way. This vid is much appreciated.
well done Thanks from Queensland
Hey bud great video I needed the belt routing. Instead of dropping the clutch I just loosen the two clutch retaining plate bolts taking one out so you can pull it out of the clutch then unplug the clutch and you can get the belt out and only remove one bolt instead of the clutch and pully assembly.
Great video. Thanks for explaining and walking through each step, even how to push the mower, that had me stumped at first lol.
Thanks for the video!
I replaced my plastic idler pulley and the drive belt on the 3200ss Timecutter!
Dropping the deck during use melted the plastic idler pulley.
Did not show how to get the belt on at all!
Great video!! Saved me a ton of time and effort!! Very much appreciated!
Although mine didn’t require the pto to be removed, the information you provided was of great help in changing mine out. Thank you for making this video.
I sure appreciate your video Sir God bless your heart
Thank you! I’ve got an in-the-field repair and this is a great help. Now to find a store with a replacement belt in stock.
Mannnn...I've been looking at that diagram for a whike trying to figure out why it looks backward then my high school engineering vision came back from 19 years ago and I looked really hard at that diagram and seen it said bottom view lol
Thank You , very well done !!
