Because he was getting too much political power, he had the army, the people and the charisma. There was a real risk that he would become an emperor in solitary (in Rome there were 3 governors sharing the power in equal conditions) so the political system would change dramatically. Ironically Octavious took advantage of this treason, prosecuted Brutus and his allies, and became emperor calling himself Caesar in honor of his adopted father.
