There's some theories, that William would be not only a star of American Football(despite being smoll), wrestling, weightlifting but also of "inflexible" disciplines not requiring excessive creativity. I treat those theories with suspicion(as they can flip any moment with new data), as several inventions of Neandertals were replicaed by Humans only around 40 000 years after their demise eg matches. You dont invent those with inflexible mind, in my opinion.

I watched this movie. The father is a Narcissist and was so jealous and insecure that he didn't get as much attention as his Neanderthal son did, that he destroyed his relationship with his wife and his son. It was sad to see the ending that the Neanderthal has more humanity in him than his father and most human beings he was interacting with.

No one is really sure why the red hair didn't happened in other parts of the world, but it could be because of a common shared cave environment in the pontic region North of middle East, with its cloudy, mountainous and many caves who served as shelter to Neanderthal and later human who dwelled in those dark caves to survive the elements and dangerous animals.

You know, it isn't possible to be a perfect parent all the time... And there is a difference between a bully and a frustrated parent who loves their kid and wants to correct their behaviour in order to nurture them into their best potential selves.
I had lax parents but resented not being pushed more into something constructive... This doesn't result in me pushing my kids into anything, but it highlights how easy it is to get at least part of it wrong in the kids eyes, and it has lead me to be sure to mould my kids into someone that people and myself can like.
It's very possible to love your kids and yet also not like them, so you don't ever want to be in that position as a parent, and simultaneously you also want them to like you too and love you of course.
Your kids need to be able to come to you when they need you, but they also need someone who loves them to be the one who punishes them but with understanding and well-being in mind! Ultimately you only want the kid to be sorry enough so they learn and don't hurt someone or themselves again, essentially it revolves around that! And as a Father it becomes your job to teach your children about responsibility and therefore empathy for others! That doesn't mean you don't show empathy too though!
I can't tell you how many regrets I have as a Father, but I can tell you I love my boys with all my heart and if anything makes me tick, its my Family!
And Father that truly is a Bully, has set himself up a bad hand and I'll explain why...
Remember Red on that 70s show?
Well I thought (with my eldest son) that what was missing from boys upbringings was a more stern father... essentially a hardass dad... I look back on how fvcking stupid that was now with extreme feelings of pain and regret deep in my heart that I cannot express! I am so glad I realised the error of my ways and didn't dig my heals in however just to protect my own ego!
I needed to accept I was wrong in some ways, and have spent the years ever since making it upto my Son! I didn't abuse him, but I WAS much more quick to discipline and much less prone to patience also as I am now with my youngest! I was gentle and loving with both boys and especially as babies... but with the second boy, I have learned from regrets I have and as a result, I parent them both differently now!
The best advice I can give any parent is be patient! Let them try things out... so what if you were just trying to water the lawn with the little time you have, and dont want to be interrupted just so the kid can have a play with the hose, that is what being a Dad is ALL about! Instead, cherish that moment!! It wont last and it WILL fly by like nothing! And you dont get to do it ever again! I'm telling you, dont be like me and realize one day, that your son today at 3 years of age, just got what you were trying to tell him for the last year, and for the last year you were getting frustrated that "you'd told him before"!
Who is the idiot? The kid who was 2 going on 3, or adult for thinking there was a point in repeating himself?
You won't fully understand what a 2 year old can understand yet or a 3 year old, so instead of thinking "you should know this" be prepared to let them show you as they go, what they know! Give them time! Not for ever, some things do need a push along, but he patient!
Be loving, and teach them to take responsibility...
Do it all in their best interests, and you'll make it through Fatherhood without wondering if you're a bully to your own son.
The man who gets it wrong will he left with two choices, either dig in them heals, ruining the relationship even more, and the development of your child believing you had it right, or to face the consequences of regret out of genuine love and care for their children.
If you decided that a pinch of hardassness was tough love well I am warning you now! It gonna be much tougher on you for years to come if you're not a complete narcissist

The decision to put the college professor who deals with Neanderthals in his class defining them as stupid brutes in at the beginning of the 00's (the period in which I imagine the experiment with William would have taken place) is quite strange.

A decent concept, but poorly executed. The rejection William feels from both his peers and his father are supposed to represent the rejection some people feel when they are "othered" or ostracized and unfairly maligned for traits they didn't choose. The problem is, if anyone should know that Neanderthals were intelligent beings with their own culture, it would be his dad. The researcher who studies Neanderthals should know this, but because it's his dad (someone who should love him) the writer made him uncharacteristically cruel to drive home the plot of feeling rejected. That's what happens with you're a writer who comes up with great ideas but is unable to put them on paper without relying on old tropes.

I’ll say this much, the comments above are both right
It’s entertainment and as a film it needs to make things interesting, but also the film explores what this would be like
And sadly the film falls into our notions of “clumsy dumb brute” which it is also trying to say isn’t happening and that is for the concept they try to explore is disappointing to a lot of people I believe this film was trying to reach out to
Instead of him failing stuff due to incompetence, let him choose to not invest anymore than he has into subjects his father pushes him into
And don’t make him a full blown gene scientist but a historian who has his biases, instead of a man who apparently focuses on Neanderthals and should comprehend that they were more than what he has said
I’m not saying the film itself is bad, because it’s not
I feel for William especially as someone with autism and who has struggled in the same fields he does
I think it would have been good to let him be able to succeed in the maths and the sciences but let him be more interested in culture and art
Have his mother(already married to the professor) be a willing donor and let him learn art and culture from her, let him be more than a list of stereotypes that the writers sadly fall into
The film isn’t bad by any means and I don’t discredit the writers or the rest of the cast and crew by any means
It just falls short and misses a few shots that could have made it great, especially since I do love his design and the concept itself especially as a history nerd

My opinion after watching this movie a few times is that his father was determined to prove William was smarter than homo sapiens and as William grew and showed he wasnt necessarily smarter, but thought in a different way, it made his father mad. He continues to try to force William to think like a homosapien when William doesn't. So by the end, his father calls him stupid because William isn't what HE wanted William to be instead of accepting William for who he was. Then you add his fathers narcissistic behavior and jealousy. That was what my impression was. Vs his mother loved William no matter what, even if he worked a meaningless job. His father expected and demanded William prove to the world that he was essentially a genius and could learn anything when that's not true for homosapiens either. Neanderthals were considered to be simple and brutish until quite recently. However, I have read that evidence has been discovered that indicates that they may have a very sophisticated culture. Cave paintings, jewelry, and burial rites that were previously identified as belonging to Homo Sapiens have been re-dated to Neanderthal times. Plus, they were originally believed to have died out, probably due to competition from more evolved Homo Sapiens. But VERY recently Neanderthal (and Denisovan) DNA have been identified in some modern humans. This indicates that they didn't exactly disappear, but merged with us.
The only real problem I have with this movie is something the filmmakers have no control over. They only have access to Homo Sapiens actors. The Neanderthal skull was shaped differently from ours. They had a differently shaped lower jaw and their brain was also shaped different. That actor playing William did an awesome job. But the fundamental differences between the two body types extend to more than you can mimic with makeup effects. On the other hand, no real evidence has been discovered that indicate that Neanderthals weren't as "smart" as Homo Sapiens. They were around for a very long time. As a result, I would assume that they were just as capable as we are using language, doing math, and adapting to life in the 21st century.

Yet their physical strength is what would lead to their downfall, and eventual assimilation into homosapiens. They were so strong they never needed to invent things like ranged weapons, and they never created large tribes with hundreds of people in them. So in the event of a war between humans and neanderthals, the humans would win through sheer numbers and with ranged weapons. Ranged weapons also allowed us to become more efficient when it came to gathering food, especially if food became scarce.

Neanderthals are known for very skillful stone knapping of tools, so it does not make sense that William would be unintelligent or clumsy with small objects like pencils. Their burial practices suggest care for the elderly and a spiritual life.
In fact, Neanderthals and Sapiens were contemporaneous for a while, and most modern humans have Neanderthal DNA. It appears that Neanderthals were absorbed into the larger Sapiens population, not going extinct in the ordinary sense.

Also the fact that more people have blue eyes (and even more people carry the blue eyes gene) just shows we didn't breed with Neanderthals all that much. Neanderthals became extinct 40,000 years ago. Modern people do not need to use weapons. Like with your amount of weapons per household I do not know how people are not shooting life bullets during riots. It is not far from burning stores and demolishing statues.

This sounds like yet another attempt at science fiction produced by someone who is more influenced by common tropes than actual science. Most experts now think that Neanderthals didn't deviate enough from the human norm in appearance to stand out in a crowd. This concept that they were 'brutal' is out there with the idea of 'primitive savages'. He would probably fall within the normal human range for intelligence and any brutality is likely to have been nurture rather than nature related. He probably would have had the fine motor skills to handle a pencil as well. The writers would have done a better job if they hadn't picked Neanderthals as their subject and had rather gone for something like an alien or a folkloric monster. Alternatively, they could have gone further back in human development. Most of the people in my part of the world are descended from Neanderthals so, from a modern evolutionary point of view we *are* Neanderthals (as well as monkeys, but we don't talk about that). As a modern Neanderthal descendant, I consider this movie poorly realised ;)

As different populations of H.Sapiens are pretty homogenous (but still distinct enough to be classified as different sub and full species, if we went with standard applied to virtually all other creatures) there are still marked differences not only in intelligence but also in how it is expressed - neuroses, psychoses, various -pathies, addiction behaviours are more common in certain populations than in others. And at least some of that is directly proven to come from Neandertals, and presumably, other sister-species.

A more interesting direction would be for him to see the modern day as 'his age' since he was born in it and not really any different beyond genetics. I sort of disagree. I thought so too for a second, and his friend laughed it off saying “he’s not a time travel.” And in that sense, yes, he is just as much a modern day human as us. But then he isn’t. He is a clone from a society and species long dead. The utter loneliness and sense of displacement he feels is what he is speaking to. He wants to be in a world where he is not the only one. That is why he says he wants to go back. He wants to go back to a world where he isn’t the only one.
Now how much of that is genetics or his upbringing? In fact the movie fails a bit on this question quite often. He didn’t have a normal early childhood development in the lab. No socialization with other children until he was like what, 5? And with a narcissist “dad” at that? And he grew up aware he was a clone and a Neanderthal and therefore different. He had a sense of his difference. How much did all of that colour his experience and sense of displacement? I would hazard a guess quite a bit. The movie implies it is genetics… because even for the characters that is an easy move to make. But there is a reason the movie also resists that narrative. In reality there is no way to really break that down. He is a singular individual with very unique set of genes belonging to a an extinct species, with a terrible upbringing, living in a prejudiced society with. A strong sense he doesn’t belong (both because he is neurodivergent AND because his dad never accepted him). Of course he wants to go back.

The adults in key roles in this story seem to be psychologically and pedagogically illiterate and lacking empathy.
Neanderthals could make common children with Homo sapiens - they did (we know this from genetic studies) and these children were not infertile later. This is the most probable explanation of how Neanderthals became extinct: they could simply be assimilated genetically into the species of Homo sapiens. And as Homo sapiens population was orders of magnitudes larger they vanished as a distinct species. Thus, most or all of us probably have some Neanderthal genes (and ancestors), too.
Neanderthals were born with teeth and they reached adult biological maturity by the age of 14 (not like Homo spaines by the age of 18).

Their portrayal was visually flawed, but steps could have been made to improve it. First, the actor was too tall. Someone shorter ought to have been cast. Second, all of the prosthetics were placed on the front of the face. That back of the head should have been elongated a bit with silicone. The torso ought also to have been modified through additional prosthetics. Slapping a heavy brow on someone does not make them look like a Neanderthal.
I might add that if the clips of dialogue shown here was characteristic of the rest of the film, the script was in need of a rewrite. Because that dialogue was what you might write during a first draft. A script so poor and a depiction of Neanderthals so avoidably inaccurate does not deserve whatever emotional reactions it evokes.

Neanderthals were much more powerfully built than homosapiens. Recent DNA evidence now shows how modern humans carry 3 -5% Neanderthal DNA. Mainly those of European and Asian descent. Modern humans therefore basically lived alongside our Neanderthal cousins. We basically due to our numbers. Modern humans bred with Neanderthals. If you wish to know more about this subject look up forensic anthropology and what information is needed to be able to create an image that is true to life of a skull. I felt like the dad was very poorly written to be a pseudo-villain. He speaks on one hand of the lack of intelligence on the part of Neanderthals and then talks about how humans could learn from neanderthals. He raises William or at least helps, so he's fully aware William is not a grunting brute with a lack of basic intelligence. I don't think the dad was bad. I think he was badly written. They wanted an antagonist to challenge the films themes and also wanted an archaic scientist who doesn't know what they're talking about. So they hamfisted it into the dad role. If he acted like that around others consistently he wouldn't have been in the situation to be a part of the story
Any anthropologist in this decade could tell you that technologically, Humans and Neanderthals we're identical for their shared history, but that they were not the same. They were very closely related, close enough they could reproduce and have viable offspring. But to our current knowledge they were different enough to qualify as a separate species but same genus. Much like how lions and tigers can have viable offspring but are still distinct species.

One point that bothers me is that the movie constantly says that humans believe that neanderthals were stupid and savage. We know from the size of their skull caveties that neanderthals had larger brains than modern humans. While this may not imply they were smarter (whales have larger brains than humans by volume), it doesn't mean they were any dumber than homosapians. As for the savage part, they were hunter gatherers like homosapian cavemen were. The main reason they went extinct and we didn't is because homosapians lived in larger groups so we usually outcompeted neanderthals for resources wherever both were found.

Humans were weak, so We banded together in big groups for safety, neanderthals were stronger and could easier protect themselves in smaller groups until the humans came with trowing weapons. Approximately 20% of Neanderthal DNA is still persistent today with the majority of the human population consisting of about 2-3% neanderthal DNA per person, exept Africa ofcourse.
