Oliver Nelson is one of my favorite arrangers. Lea/In Love - what a gorgeous album and cover. I dig the promo stamp on the back of the cover. Wow - Tenor Madness; nice second pressing. What a beautiful copy of Takin' Off! One of my favorite albums.

Hello from New Zealand. I have a large jazz music collection . One of my favorite jazz musicians is Chet Baker. I love his trumpet playing , but more importantly his vocals. I had the pleasure of seeing Miles Davis in concert in the 1980s when he toured NZ. It was around the time of his Tutu album release. His back up band were funky. Good records there.

Hello! That’s awesome! I love Chet Baker and listen to him often, I also love his vocals. That Tutu album caught my attention early on through my collecting, I need to revisit and it is a great album for sure! Cheers!

It can be a bit hard to advise you on where to begin cause there are so many subgenres but my opinion would be to start with the more popular artists and then move on to the more obscure artists. Artists I think you should check out first are: John Coltrane, Miles Davies, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and Pharoah Sanders. Albums I would suggest are Kind of Blue by Miles Davies, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady by Charles Mingus, Giant Steps by John Coltrane, Extrapolation by John McLaughlin, Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock, The Shape of Jazz to Come by Ornette Coleman, and Masterpieces By Ellington by Duke Ellington.

My apologies for not seeing this sooner! I agree with Caleb’s response, definitely start with the big named jazz musicians and if you have an instrument preference for music I’d say look into the popular jazz musicians that played the instrument. For example, if you’re into trumpet you can check out Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Louis Armstrong, etc.. It also depends on what type of jazz you’re looking for; big band, bebop, hard bop, modal, free jazz, etc.. Start with big named musicians / groups / labels and then work your way to the obscure stuff (if you’re into that). Cheers!
