This program would never do that
greg77389 Look at the comment directly above yours.
Pete Detrick
Your point?
greg77389 That I said the thing you did first.
I think this would have worked better if you flipped creatures that went backwards and used the absolute value of their distance. This would have given a bump in early stages to fast creatures that happened to be placed backwards.
well then do your own simulator with blackjack and hookers (with your own rules) lol
these are the rules of surviving in *this* particular universe.
he just gave the guy some feedback, chill out.
yea its his "tips" for him.
You could square the distance and it would always be positive. This would however work against the goal of moving forward as it would reward failure. If the goal was to move to water and they went really fast away from water I do not think they would survive no matter how well they performed at the task of moving.
back means dead
I would argue that distances should be absolute, a creature that's really fast at going backwards could just be flipped around, instead of killed...
I mean, your "worst" creature was actually the fastest out of them all, shame to lose such potential.
What do you think would happen if you were being chased by a predator and you ran backwards?
Gio D
Well I'd sure as hell hope my best chance of survival isn't wiggle my muscles randomly and hope I go in the right direction.
Ndoki Hasaki when the predators are randomly generated as well, it's not too bad.
Ndoki Hasaki when the predators are randomly generated as well, it's not too bad.
but thats not how evolution works...
The creature that went to the left was quite good. You should optimize for absolute distance instead.
Well, its going in the wrong direction, away from food and toward predators.
@@3_Circles Why must to predators always be towards the left? What if *_they_* evolved and became smart enough to attack from the right, knowing that the prey will always prioritize moving the right more than anything? What phenomenon is causing all the food that only appear towards the right, in which the food can never appear to the left?
@Zero Cool I can see by the tone you're setting with your comment that you didn't acknowledge my joke... Putting jokes aside, the main comment here still has a valid point, where it should be optimized for distance regardless of direction. Your comment makes sense; they go right because"that's how it works", but that doesn't necessarily mean that's how it _has_ to work. The point of that specific excercize is to see how far the creature can go in a certain amount of time. Limiting the direction isn't entirely ideal.
@AP Valid point, but you threw me off with your point in rational decisions for survival. Could you go more into depth with that so I can fully grasp what you're saying?
correct, together with a way to mirror the direction it would improve the early convergence by up to 2x.

Nature is the true genius, I am always humbled by the incredible results nature achieves without ever having to think, that's genius on a whole different level...

For the people suggesting he keep or mirror the creatures moving backwards, you need to realize the movement-to-the-right is just a metaphor, the actual fitness test isn't important. He could have defined fitness as large size or largest number of nodes or heck even NOT moving, and the system would have evolved appropriate figures. Left/Right movement just represented moving away from or towards a particular 'fitness' measurement, his imaginary world defined it as moving right.
You're doing god's work.
Yeah, it's also good because this guy is real.
lel, god isn't evolutionists, he's creationists. read the bible you devil.

Evolution is mindless chaos, why are you assigning it parameters? Why are you directing Evolution? When did Evolution get Parameters? From Whom? Why not do TRUE Evolution and not give any parameters and no materials? You are inconsistent with what you believe.
@@SavedByFaithInJesus Of course evolution has parameters. They're called the laws of physics.
Also, the environmental circumstance heavily parameterizes the evolutionary process. How much radiation is there? How many resources are available? Which resources? How consistent is the environment? etc.
All those parameters will affect how evolution takes place (ex. the more unstable/rapidly changing the environment is, the more evolution will select for creatures that undergo larger mutations).

Topheye I suppose it wouldnt be "natural evolution" that way. And he set the (somewhat arbitary) objective to "go right" as something certain because it is easier to observe.
it would be considered as a higher power intervention :)

This proves that creative design works much better than random something or other. After designing the parts and the rules for each part you devolved it all to randomness.

Great simulation. Funny how many people in the comments don't realise that evolution can happen in any environment (including 2D CG ones where there is shark infested custard to the left), not just ones that have the same rules and requirements as planet earth.
Becuase most people don't realize that evolution is based on very simple rules that pretty much anyone can understand if they just look it up. They think it's some magical biological process that makes animals. Most likely why so many creationists don't believe in evolution. Because they don't understand that it's not a process that life does, it's a consequence of how life functions.
Magic is based on very simple rules that anyone can look up. Real DNA doesn't map one-for-one into functioning systems. Like actual software code, most possible programs are non-functioning nonsense - it takes a brain able to heuristically explore the expression space and match up with a larger design/plan that is kept in longer term memory. Evolution proposes the removal of the long term memory/design, and the heuristic search depth to be reduced to one step, and then claims that that process is computationally sufficient produce code no human mind in history has been able to even conceive of.
J.A.C'ked Uh... what are you even talking about?
Cortster
Evolution.
More specifically, how it's not as trivial as you expect.
The slowest creature was so cool, it lept like a frog.
wouldnt it have made more sense to look at the creatures covering the most DISTANCE and then inverting their build if they went left???
well, if you are in a world where water is to the right and the predators are to the left, running to the left would be a dumb thing to do.
i was trying to remember this from my childhood and i now ive found this gem. thank you sir for the good times throughout life you have given me with this software. i was poor and didnt have much but a laptop and only free games at the time or what i could torrent lol those were the days.
Great electronic universe y'all have created.
Ah yes 6 years ago
Idea: Use the distance from the start as a rating. And if it happens to be a movement into the negative direction just mirror the whole creature.
dude no, its evolution taking its course in the game not some God designing the creatures by hand. it must all happen on its own without intervention or it would become religion instead of evolution
Yes but "God" designed the problem. He had to say "If they go far into right, they are good". I'm just saying that a creature that manages to go far into left is probably also good and interesting. "If they move far from the start, they are good" would be more effective to find an interesting species.
but 'problem' has to be 1.random 2.difficult (because 'problem' represents challange which living creatures actually face in narture and it is what causes natural selection-evolution) so yes you can set the bar like that but not for that reason but just for qualifying randomness and difficulty
If a real creature could run fast, but simply ran backwards, it wouldn't be arbitrarily killed off...
Chaotic Khajiit Nope , you see left or right does not have the same meaning in this simulation as it has for us. Moving in right direction is simply a criteria to survive, the creature who moves more in the right direction is more likely to survive than the one which doesn't moves or moves in the wrong direction.
Its just a criteria for selection and not really the left right that we humans understand.
Why is this on my suggestions? It's like the ants. I'm sure others like this video but it's not my thing

1000 get tested. 500 slow shits die, and the rest reproduces to get 1000 again, this time better ones. And it keeps repeating til we get the perfect villain in DBZ. HOW GENIUS!!
Interesting.
If I were making this, I might have made it so that the "winners" were the ones who went farthest from the origin in either direction. But this is good too, and I suppose it makes it a bit easier to compare creatures directly.
Then you'd have basically a simmetric conjunct, the intention in going just one side is assymetry itself.
fss1704 No, I mean whatever gets the farthest to one side or the other wins.
I think. Your comment is kind of hard to interpret.
Timothy McLean yeah, read it:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chirality_(chemistry)
The problem with allowing the creatures going both sides is that there's nothing to break assimetry, the creatures would have as much tendency to go left than they would have to go right, in a simulation there's no external stimulae (A random push) to allow symetrical molecules to change state and choose wich side they're going, that's what i mean by breaking the simmetry.
A similar question is: if all matter on the universe have originated from an equlateral expansion, why things rotate?
I'm not saying it wouldn't work, it would if you separate both in two evolutive conjuncts, but then it'd be pointless since you'd got basically another set of creatures chirally different from one another.
It'd be like playing with two different random seeds choosing a side to each group.

Rewatching after ages, and I just had a thought-- couldn't you optimize this significantly by scoring things based on the absolute value of the distance travelled, then if anything travels backwards simply flip the creature?
Wait, the slow creatures living and fast ones dying is mirrored.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

"Here is my evolution simulator, the first thing you do is... create... all of them... Hmmm....."
Well, evolution doesn't exactly tell us where life began, it tells us how already existing life behaves. So, even if you actually created life yourself, it would still evolve.
Now I'm wondering whether there are abiogenesis simulators.
yes. yes that's it. The first organisms were literally piles of random chemicals strung together.
@@LineOfThy If the first organisms, our ancestors, were merely simple chemicals strung together, that would make them very similar to any other non sentient chemical that formed. How then, could something that formed from non sentience, and is it self not sentient, evolve into something sentient. The idea that we arose the way you claim doesn't make any sense. At the beginning life was the same as the wind or the rain, completely driven by cause and effect, created by cause and effect, and having no conscience. At what point could consciousness arise out of that situation? It's impossible, and it doesn't make sense. We wouldn't be able to have consciousness for the same reason the wind isn't conscious. Unless you're willing to give up on free will, aka Doing things of your own accord apart from the cause and effect all around you. If you're willing to admit that you don't have free will, then have fun with your meaningless empty life in which you have literally nothing to do with what goes on. You might as well be watching a really really long movie.
The environment should evolve along with the creatures. There are a few interesting things we can do.
1. Change the environment over time.
2. Force creatures to travel right, then take those creatures and make them jump as high as possible. Then, do the reverse with a fresh batch to compare.
This would be a simulator for directed evolution, or Creationist Evolution, as there is an intelligent director behind the operation.
An undirected evolution simulator would have to be able to create the creatures without you clicking a button, develop a goal, identify success patterns, and recycle old parts without your input. : O
But you don't affect how a creature is made when you do click the button. You clicking the button simply makes the creature exist, then the AI decides how it will be constructed.
@@ThallanarRabidtooth
You affect *that* a creature is made.
You set the conditions for what counts as gain and what counts as loss.
You (or rather somebody will) create the pieces that the program uses to build the creatures.
You create the program upon which the AI runs.
You create the script for the AI itself.
The experiment cannot exist without an intelligent mind having designed it.
Ergo it cannot be used to demonstrate an example of the Directorless evolution.
