    I think this would have worked better if you flipped creatures that went backwards and used the absolute value of their distance. This would have given a bump in early stages to fast creatures that happened to be placed backwards.

      You could square the distance and it would always be positive. This would however work against the goal of moving forward as it would reward failure. If the goal was to move to water and they went really fast away from water I do not think they would survive no matter how well they performed at the task of moving.

    I would argue that distances should be absolute, a creature that's really fast at going backwards could just be flipped around, instead of killed...
    I mean, your "worst" creature was actually the fastest out of them all, shame to lose such potential.

What if *_they_* evolved and became smart enough to attack from the right, knowing that the prey will always prioritize moving the right more than anything? @Zero Cool I can see by the tone you're setting with your comment that you didn't acknowledge my joke... Putting jokes aside, the main comment here still has a valid point, where it should be optimized for distance regardless of direction. Your comment makes sense; they go right because"that's how it works", but that doesn't necessarily mean that's how it _has_ to work. The point of that specific excercize is to see how far the creature can go in a certain amount of time. Limiting the direction isn't entirely ideal.

    4:27 wait a minute, that's so genius, the randomness of the selection process preserves the 'ideas' that didn't work, or at least some of their features. That means that ideas (sorry I know they are not ideas of anyone, but they are ideas in their own right) that overall may have failed, are explored to their fullest and incorporated into anything that benefits from it. Nature is the true genius, I am always humbled by the incredible results nature achieves without ever having to think, that's genius on a whole different level...

    For the people suggesting he keep or mirror the creatures moving backwards, you need to realize the movement-to-the-right is just a metaphor, the actual fitness test isn't important. He could have defined fitness as large size or largest number of nodes or heck even NOT moving, and the system would have evolved appropriate figures. Left/Right movement just represented moving away from or towards a particular 'fitness' measurement, his imaginary world defined it as moving right.

    • @cortster12
      @cortster12 8 років тому +4

      Becuase most people don't realize that evolution is based on very simple rules that pretty much anyone can understand if they just look it up. They think it's some magical biological process that makes animals. Most likely why so many creationists don't believe in evolution. Because they don't understand that it's not a process that life does, it's a consequence of how life functions.

    • @YeshuaChuy
      @YeshuaChuy 8 років тому +1

      Magic is based on very simple rules that anyone can look up. Real DNA doesn't map one-for-one into functioning systems. Like actual software code, most possible programs are non-functioning nonsense - it takes a brain able to heuristically explore the expression space and match up with a larger design/plan that is kept in longer term memory. Evolution proposes the removal of the long term memory/design, and the heuristic search depth to be reduced to one step, and then claims that that process is computationally sufficient produce code no human mind in history has been able to even conceive of.

    • @Mobin92
      @Mobin92 8 років тому +4

      Yes but "God" designed the problem. He had to say "If they go far into right, they are good". I'm just saying that a creature that manages to go far into left is probably also good and interesting. "If they move far from the start, they are good" would be more effective to find an interesting species.

    • @user-mx6qn4ks3c
      @user-mx6qn4ks3c 8 років тому

      but 'problem' has to be 1.random 2.difficult (because 'problem' represents challange which living creatures actually face in narture and it is what causes natural selection-evolution) so yes you can set the bar like that but not for that reason but just for qualifying randomness and difficulty

    • @redorchestra6059

      Chaotic Khajiit Nope , you see left or right does not have the same meaning in this simulation as it has for us. Moving in right direction is simply a criteria to survive, the creature who moves more in the right direction is more likely to survive than the one which doesn't moves or moves in the wrong direction.
      Its just a criteria for selection and not really the left right that we humans understand.

    Interesting.
    If I were making this, I might have made it so that the "winners" were the ones who went farthest from the origin in either direction. But this is good too, and I suppose it makes it a bit easier to compare creatures directly.

    • @fss1704
      @fss1704 8 років тому

      Then you'd have basically a simmetric conjunct, the intention in going just one side is assymetry itself.

      fss1704 No, I mean whatever gets the farthest to one side or the other wins.
      I think. Your comment is kind of hard to interpret.

    • @fss1704
      @fss1704 8 років тому

      Timothy McLean yeah, read it:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chirality_(chemistry)
      The problem with allowing the creatures going both sides is that there's nothing to break assimetry, the creatures would have as much tendency to go left than they would have to go right, in a simulation there's no external stimulae (A random push) to allow symetrical molecules to change state and choose wich side they're going, that's what i mean by breaking the simmetry.
      A similar question is: if all matter on the universe have originated from an equlateral expansion, why things rotate?

    • @fss1704
      @fss1704 8 років тому

      I'm not saying it wouldn't work, it would if you separate both in two evolutive conjuncts, but then it'd be pointless since you'd got basically another set of creatures chirally different from one another.

    • @fss1704
      @fss1704 8 років тому

How then, could something that formed from non sentience, and is it self not sentient, evolve into something sentient. The idea that we arose the way you claim doesn't make any sense. At the beginning life was the same as the wind or the rain, completely driven by cause and effect, created by cause and effect, and having no conscience. At what point could consciousness arise out of that situation? It's impossible, and it doesn't make sense. We wouldn't be able to have consciousness for the same reason the wind isn't conscious. Unless you're willing to give up on free will, aka Doing things of your own accord apart from the cause and effect all around you. The environment should evolve along with the creatures. There are a few interesting things we can do.
    1. Change the environment over time.
    2. Force creatures to travel right, then take those creatures and make them jump as high as possible. Then, do the reverse with a fresh batch to compare.

    This would be a simulator for directed evolution, or Creationist Evolution, as there is an intelligent director behind the operation.
    An undirected evolution simulator would have to be able to create the creatures without you clicking a button, develop a goal, identify success patterns, and recycle old parts without your input. : O

    • @ThallanarRabidtooth

      You affect *that* a creature is made.
      You set the conditions for what counts as gain and what counts as loss.

      You create the program upon which the AI runs.
