  • VALORANT is a free, 5v5 tac-shooter matchup to plant or defuse the Spike, developed by Riot Games. On Inside Unreal this week, we’re joined by Riot’s Principal Software Engineer, Marcus Reid, to talk about VALORANT's performance requirements in three different scenarios: the server, low-end player hardware, and high-end player hardware. Marcus will detail each configuration's unique challenges and demo several engine optimizations they’ve made!

All of Riot's optimisation changes should be part of the engine by default, they're incredibly clever with all their solutions. UE4 runs so much faster in Valorant than any other game, and better than any UE3 game, can't wait for the upgrade to UE5 for Valorant!

    • @JemRau

Thats because Valorant is using a simplified form of Unreal 4. In other words, a downgrade.

@@liiillllliiilllliilllliii9461 they did that so that they could target very low end machines... and move it to consoles and mobile phones..... its all about the money not about a "good art style" the art style is ugly for a "competitive" shooter.

Their optimizations are custom tailored... UE is aiming to be an elastic environment. You can still disable many of the default features to improve performance, and BTW I believe as Marcus said a lot of this is not engineering but being smart and disciplined about how you do your art etc.

I mean, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was also made in Unreal (plus other modifications) when Square Enix has their own in-house engine they used for all previous games they ever did.
There's a bunch of other video game companies that are starting to use Unreal as well.
Just goes to show Unreal really is the single best leading game engine right now.

I wonder why they had to basically make a game that runs on virtually 99.9% of PC's. There's like 45% of steam users that have 1060 3Gb or higher and probably like 80% that have 1030 equivalent or higher which is like 5-10 times faster than HD 4000
Why make a giant engineering effort for those low end 20% old hardware when you can just make it for 50-80% that would look significantly better and require less engineering effort?

      1. This is a very unique approach by Riot. Almost no other company does this. This is the very fringe way to do this. It's not designed for low end like 3050 or 1650. It's not even designed for ultra low end like ryzen APUs or 10-year old laptop 650M. It's designed for a decade old low end that's two orders of magnitude slower than modern hardware.
      2. surely game designed for 1050 and higher would be at least 20% more attractive than the game designed for HD4000. It'll also be cheaper to make and more future proof - ergo they could make more money this way by making game better. Look at AC: Odyssey. It's impossible to make this game work on a decade old hardware that's order of magnitude slower. Yet large part of it's attractiveness lies in beauty unlocked by powerful modern hardware.
      3. If you think hardware doesn't matter, why don't we design games on hardware from 80s? This way we'll definitely catch this last 0.1% of users don't we?
