What I love about this challenge is your focus on building relationships and connections. Only good can come from this. Thank you for being so positive and innovative on your channel!
I've only recently started watching your zero waste videos & it's really opened my eyes so much! Even though I eat vegan, promote vegansim etc i have never held myself accountable for how much plastic I buy & how much I'm constantly wasting!! Just Thank you
You're even cooler now :DD
I saw found her today Miles!! 😊
My challenge this year is not to buy any 'things' that are not essential. I'm still spending money on experiences, just not 'things'. We live in a small bungalow, and can't afford to bring in any more 'stuff'. The only 'things' where I may make an exception is where I buy something useful or beautiful from someone who made it themselves - and the money goes directly into their hands. Loving your challenge, and may try it next year :) x
Sue MacFarlane that's wonderful!
Please could you make a video about your dog? Like where you get zero waste dog waste bags, if you feed him vegan dog food and why/why not, and what leads and collars do you use as most of the ones I've seen are leather. I'm a vegan and starting my zero waste journey, and would love to adopt a dog from a shelter, so a video like that would be a lot of help. Thanks, you are a true inspiration xx
Alex C I buy biodegradable dog poo bags and most collars and leads these days are made of various artificial materials, so it's easy in that respect. Personally I would never feed a dog a vegan diet. Although they are omnivores and eat some veggies, they still need protein from meat, chicken or animal sources. I feed mine a fish and rice dried dog food, which seems to me to be the best compromise.
it's not very good to make your dog vegan. dog needs meat and as jacqui says "Although they are omnivores and eat some veggies, they still need protein from meat, chicken or animal sources. I feed mine a fish and rice dried dog food, which seems to me to be the best compromise.".
Jacqui du Rocher Thanks! I'm a bit clueless about pets as I was never raised with one so I'll have to do lots more research to make sure I can be a responsible dog owner :-)
samesylviaplath I will probably follow your advice about the food, as it seems cruel to deprive a dog of it's proper protein source. Thanks for the advice anyways :-)
Vdog, natural balance. Biodegradable poo bags or if you have a yard you can scoop and bury/compost. Finding second hand collars and leads would be the least wasteful.
In this no spend year, are people allowed to pay for you?
n i n a I was wondering the same :O
I read a book a few years ago about reducing unnessecary spending called "how I lived a year on just a pound a day" it was a woman from Bristol who had written it and it charted her journey so it might be worth a read if you can find it at the library then you can borrow it for free or you might be able to find a cheap copy on Amazon or similar x
My goal for 2018 is to reduce my waste and generally buy less unnecessary 'stuff'....I went shopping in the last week and it's been a real eye opener , it's sooooo difficult to buy anything without packaging !!!!. I'm am currently researching to find better places locally to do my essential food shopping xx
I would love to see your bike and set up. After winter, I want to start cycle commuting and I'm interested in how you do it and any tips.
I don't think I can quit cinema, It is a way to live in a dream or in another life and the at home film experience is not the same :-)
Fokaira Right, for some of us art is essential for the soul ❤️
Buy a year card and no snacks then do it 😅
Also trash jar update?
Coming up soon!
You're honestly so fantastic!! Continually pushing the boundaries. I think I'm going to try do the no spend year thing too. I didn't even think about not buying food out though.. Good idea though(also congratulations on 50k)
When I see that you have uploaded I do a little happy squeal. You're totally inspiring.
i'm doing the nobuy for January with you too, i broke it quite spectacularly on the second day by buying two swimsuits at the leisure centre (shops here are few and far between, very rural) and my body's weird, they don't make swimsuits that fit me normally, i have 2 identical black ones but i hate black - excuses excuses - really, i never go to that village (everything's a village, you have a leisure centre in the village with a school and drive an hour to get to it - rural life) and i was like, it's now or never, let's face it - but so far otherwise i've kept it, which is a record for me. I'm trying not to buy quite a few things at the moment, despite having quite relaxed rules (mainly, anything i need for my holiday soon what i haven't booked a single thing for, not even travel or accommodation), self control isn't my strong point
Josephine Winter I hate black too. I also struggle with clothes fitting correctly so when I find something that fits like a glove I get excited 😐
Your hair is looking so shiny and beautiful!!!
Thanks for sharing this Video. I am from germany, I startet my zero Waste life a couple weeks ago.
Sending love from my channel. Love Vanessa
omg I love this so much. I am considering doing a no-spend month, perhaps. I never even considered biking to work (pretty embarrassed about that) but I have a bike at the place I'm subletting and I just looked it up on Google maps and it wouldn't take much longer than driving! I am going to try it later this week, I'm so excited :) Can't wait for more of your videos!
I visited both Cafes as the Fitzrovia location only has disposable cups and eating utensils yet at the Balham location they offer proper crockery and cutlery.
The Fitzrovia venue is a lot smaller than the Balham one yet I liked it more as it was cosier , friendlier staff and no blaring music!
Balham is located at the bottom of the Dog House Gym and although a nice looking Cafe it is for people who like to "show off" or as they say "Be Seen" , the staff weren't particularly friendly nor helpful!
A much as I like these styles of Cafes as I'm vegetarian , eat organic , zerowaster , minimalistic , fairtrader and passionate about supporting independent business I do find it overpriced for what they make / sell.
As a Vegan , organic and making products instore Cafe I know it can cost more yet the price tag they use is quite extreme and the worst part is it's all basically disposable!
I thought the point of these places was to advocate a healthy way of life which includes encouraging a dine in experience which uses proper crockey and cutlery as well as using sustainable take-away packaging!
As a ZeroWaster I was shocked with how much plastic they used!
My Matcha Latte was in a takeaway cup even though I mentioned I was dining / eating in and my boyfriends smoothie had a plastic straw , they could use metal or bamboo ones instead!
Wouldn't recommend in general!
love the turtle neck + blazer you were wearing~
looks so snuggly and warm but chic
I'm not sure if I could really ever do a complete no spend challenge, but I've been really trying to focus on only spending money on essentials and things that really benefit my life or those around me. Your videos are really inspiring! I think it's so important to constantly evaluate your life and where you put your energy and you seem to really have made that a huge part of your videos and I really appreciate that.
I love your channel. I am really taking notes and excited to be starting my zero waste journey. I am the point where I am starting to replace items such as my razor and menstrual items (I am already vegan). I like your no spend thing too and would love a video of no spend days or activities you can do in the uk. I felt like you felt like you had to justify certain things on your no spend in this vid but I totally get it and hope others do. It's about enjoying time and making memories and experiences and not buying things you don't need that just add up and are a waste of money such as like you say coffee shops. There's nothing wrong with inviting friends over for coffee instead of paying extortionate prices for a coffee in a coffee shop. Anyway , looking forward to more inspiring vids by you xx
I am so looking forward to watching your videos on this topic! It's so interesting and inspiring. Much love!
your hair is so beautiful:( i mean, I'm trying to do my hair routine as ZW as possible but still haven't found any good solution
samesylviaplath for zw hair care, I highly recommend LUSH - all of their hair products come in these recycled containers and if you bring back five empty containers when you're finished with the product they give you free stuff!! And their hair stuff is organic and vegan. And it works really well for any hair type because I have hard to manage curls and I can use their products!
i don't live in a country that has Lush +unfortunately, a lot of theirs stuff has SLS, i bought one conditioner (without SLS) in a bar but it's awful so rn it's not the option for me
Look into rye flour for hair washing :) you can buy a big paper bag of rye flour - you just mix it with water, I love it and it really works for me!
I use castile soap for everything from body wash to shaving cream and shampoo. I've used the liquid soap for a while and enjoy it but I've recently switched to bars as the ones I buy come in paper wrappers which is much better than the plastic containers. Just a thought.
I absolutely love this entire video! You're an inspiration and spreading this information is such a great thing - thank you so much for what you're doing!
The farmer's market at Angel on Sundays is quite good if you need another one to try? x
Can we be friends 😭
raw white onion tastes fine, but it's like cumin and chilli, you can't taste anything else round it! How do you taste mint with it? Any tips on tastes you can eat alongside it that it combines with well much appreciated!
although i live 10 mins away from brighton i have not been able to find the zero waste shop, please please please can you tell me where it is and what it is called.Thank you so much, i really enjoy your videos
OK I love the idea of trading. I don't know why I don't hear about this more from zero wasters! It's such a good idea!
Also, what do you do with your brussels sprout stalk?????
Hello, from Cranbury NJ! Thanks for sharing your everyday moments. You’re a real inspiration. It’s really given me a different perspective of how to be happy without having to spend any money. Thank you!
i have a reaaally stupid question but i do want to cook dry red kidney beans, but i cannot make them as soft as the canned ones! can somebody enlighten me?
camilove95 you need to soak them in cold water overnight or at least 8hrs and then cook in a pan with lots of water for about 2 and half hour! Always completely covered in water. I hope it helps😺
Don't add salt when cooking. To get them soft I have to cook them for about 2 hours. Keep checking them every 15 mins after the hour and 15 min mark.
thank you thank you!! i used to cook them for a bit less time, so they always turned out a bit hard on the outside! :)
You are such an inspiration~ I absolutely love you!~💗
I'm coming to London this weekend and plan to pop by Rawligion , what do you recommend I try ?
It used to be, back in the day, that people would simply do these things, such as bike riding, frisbee, playing cards or boardgames, walking around town or country or to a friend's house, as NORMAL. It's good to hear it's coming back!!😊Oh, and reading a good book from a library.
I know this is unrelated to the video but could you possibly do a series on how to grow veggies in pots?
Zero waste confessions video!
Is rawligion still open? They closed down at Tottenham Court Road . I used to go at lunchtime sometimes
I find your videos really interesting and generally really well thought out, although I have to say I don't think what you said about giving that vegan restaurant exposure makes a lot of sense. Exposure is not a commodity and cannot be used to buy food or other goods by the recipient. Therefore it isn't a sustainable way to purchase food or any other service. Of course if your goal is to save a bit of money for yourself (for travelling ect) it makes sense, but if your goal is to educate people on sustainability I think you have to have another look at the economics of that "transaction". I think we should be happy to pay people for their services. Money is just a representation of a persons time and paying someone for the time they have spent crafting you a meal, a sweater or a painting should be a given. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this :)
oh that purple sprouting is calling for me, i love it so much (but hate other broccoli)
Thank you for always making such interesting and helpful vlogs! I am moving to London and would love if you could do a video on all the zero waste stores / farmers markets you shop at!!
Your footprint is commendable.... and love that Brussel sprout branch, never seen that...
I'm really curious about how you do birthday gifts - you mentioned making the homemade Indian feast with your boyfriend (YUM) but how about other people's gifts? :) Thank you for sharing your journey with us! Sunshine and love from Australia x
Chrissy Vellacott for my immediate family I cook dinner for them, bake a nice cake and we all play board/ card games. Which doubles up as a 'gift' and a pretty chilled out party. X
I cleaned my grandfather's house for his birthday. Or birthday hikes or picnics.
Since working out at home or a park is very doable and a gym is not a necessity, it seems more a gym membership is a luxury. Gyms have poor ventillation, are often over crowded, has other people's sweat and bad body odor everywhere, etc. I am not sure why people are stuck on having to go some place to exercise. There is a book called Your Body's Gym or Your Body is Your Gym or something like this. He gives examples and reps of every body weight exercise there is. Who NEEDS a gym.
Raw LawGirl UA-cam also have great workouts and fitness education 😝
I wish i could live with no spending. It just seems difficult
Another great vlog i always enjoy them. Always giving me inspiration. X
Crossfit is always essential! And that breakfast looked amazing!
Very fun! I too wish I could eat onions but I'm allergic. Though subbing for turnip roots gets my dishes somewhat there! Loving the sprouts! Do you also make raw sprouts at home?
Can i just say... You look really pretty with the outfit. Suits you alot😍
I love how fluffy and gorgeous chocolatey brown your hair is! Youre also such an inspiration to me!
excited to see you and maddie together! have been subscribed to you both for quite a while now
As usual a great Video and so much passion about ZeroWaste , local business and new details on the No Spend Challenge! I'm not doing the challenge yet for the last few years I have been conscious with what I spend and try to spend as wisely as possible as well as ask myself if it is a need or want and this usually helps me and my finances are in good order!
By the way I'm a vegetarian , minimalistic and zerowaster living in Cardiff!
Are you still doing no poo? Your hair looks amazing! I am very interested in doing no poo! Could you do another update soon and also talk about what you have learned is the best way to do no poo (in your experience)? Please and thank you! Love your channel so much!
I've never known how brussels sprouts grow, so I was kinda shocked when you showed them. I've never seen anything like that. 😆
would you be able to make a video about your budget? love the video ♥️
I just arrived in London for a semester abroad. I want to keep up my vegan and zero waste ethics but I'm nervous about finding the lowest prices. Could you possibly let me know what the cheapest bulk store is in london? I'm close to a whole foods, but I'm not sure that's the cheapest place. Thanks! Love seeing the vegan places you eat, so I can try them out while I'm here!
egg-n-toast a lot of stores may have their prices online. Maybe check them out and compare?
That food looked amazing! Do you have plans for all the money you are saving? A trip, perhaps?
I do indeed have big plans but I'm keeping those to myself for the time being 😊
Ptp
100 kilos is so much! You go girl, we believe in you! This challenge is really eye opening, thanks for sharing!
Beautiful life for a Beautiful Soul.
Hello can I firstly say that I have found your channel to be really inspiring and it's been kind of a remedy for me (currently fighting this flu virus 😥) anyways I recently went Vegan, nearly two weeks I think and absolutely loving it (no going back) I live the idea of zero waste and despite being poorly I have spent most the evening scrubbing old glass containers ready for the future and ive found some pretty cool old scarves I'm gonna make into my own drawstring bags ;) I'm hoping you can help me, I live in Chelmsford Essex and I can't find any places like you have in London for bulk buying, would you have any idea where my nearest one might be? Or the best one in London then I could just maybe head there once a month with a suitcase and stock up! Thanks so much for a truly beautiful channel, I'm sure there's still lots yet to be discovered :) ps - if your ever up for traveling to Colchester there is a great Vegan cafe who I'm sure would be very grateful of the exposure, let me know 🤗
omg i wish i could hang out with you blue ollis and maddie that would literally be goals
Loved this! You are just getting more and more inspirational with each video! I also want more days where I don't spend money. I wish for more vlogs like this! And for one day getting to see more of your gym!
All the food looks so delicious! We have a vegan restaurant when I lived in the city and they were delicious I even had them cater my birthday dinner! Thank you for sharing xoxo 😊❤
I consider my yoga membership an essential, it’s so great for my spirit, body and mind.
I've recently developed a love for raw red onion :p so I totally get it ;) love the inspiration you're giving me this morning, need to have some no spend time now as we just had to have a new boiler fitted! 😬 Eeek! Keep up the good work!! :D x
Very cool! Did you tip the server, or was it more of an order then pick up your food cafe? Also, I didn't get to tell you earlier, but I have been doing no-spend also. Love your videos, as always.
Mary Blossoms I’m interested, too! I don’t think tipping is a thing there, at least not in the same way as it is in the USA.
Emy Anderson Thanks Emy! I thought that might be the case, but wasn't sure. :)
We do tip. But normally just for sit in meals x
I love ur videos!! Could you make playlists with zero waste or vegan videos please? That would be great
Love your hair right now! Love your dedication. Luckily I can bike to work everyday :)
I’m excited to watch your no spend challenge!! Good luck!
Can you give me some more ideas about how to use soya chunks please 👍🏻
Can you do a no poo update? Your hair is on pointe!
Hey, I'm new to your channel and absolutely loving your content. I was just wondering what you do for work and whether your job fits in with your zero waste living?
LOVE your 2018 challenge! You can do this!!
As for future videos, maybe you could make a video about types of free activities you could do during winter, for those of us who are fighting snow?
can i ask how long your commute is to work? I'd love to commute to uni but i think for me it is too far (10 miles each way :( )
sorry i meant cycle x
Wow, this is wonderful what you're doing! What are you planning to do with the money that you've saved up or it's just a general part of your no waste journey? Have you considered donation? I was thinking of doing something similar. :)
Also, yay! Your bf is here.
Your hair looks wonderful in this video!
Amazing vlog, i like your positivity! :)))
your hair is looking amazing! Still no shampoo?
your hair looks really nice! Are you still doing the no poo?
I am so glad I stumbled across your glorious channel
The breakfast looked so delicious!!
That was so sweet. I'm Greatful 4 u sharing. U look lovely w. That jumper and jacket.
Hey, what about vacations and trips to visit family in a different state (or country)? :)
Loved your video this week. It was very laidback and friendly. Do make more chitchat/daily vlog type videos please!
"gym membership" as an essential. Thank you, this makes me feel so much better about the stupid amount of money that I spend on my fitness. I have THE WORST time trying to make myself exercise at home. I despise working out. But my membership gets me out of the house (I'm an extroverted introvert, so it's ridiculously easy to make excuses for not getting out of the house on my days off) and makes me workout (which I tend not to do unless I've paid for it). ❤️
Samantha Ann Graham and you can usually shower there after your workout and reduce water and power bill at home 👍
Modestly Vegan alas, it's not actually a gym in the regular sense... I may have misspoke. It's Pure Barre, which does not have a locker or shower facilities 😄
Just noticed something.. I'm not a native english speaker and you just mentioned Coriander? In my mother tongue, dutch, it's Koriander. But i always thought it was Cilantro in English 😅
Congrats on those 50K by the way ;)
Do you just film with your phone?
Super inspiring :-) Keep up this amazing journey
you also inspired me to do the same with my life. at the beginning of the month i only bought stuff that was necessary for me to live but rn I'm trying not to buy things i can live without. even though for me, going to museum or cinema and pay for it is okay but i rarely go there since it's costy and i don't have enough time when i study and go to work. (i know it' wasn't your point to say that it's a bad thing, I'm just telling you my "rules" :D) kisses from Poland xx
Your videos make my day. Thank you
That daal looks really good, but why do people in the UK always do that thing where they put the rice on one side and put the curry on the other? I've literally only seen European people do that and I'm honestly curious.
Woah. I live in the US and I have literally never seen that. Weird.
Your hair looks great!
What a great video, one of my goals for 2018 is to spend less money. This winter has made it easy for me because for the last month it been 0, -1, -2, -3, etc... I think the highest has been -8 this week. It's extremely cold here in Ohio. Thanks for sharing :-)
so your boyfriend moved to london? that’s awsome!! so happy for you! good luck on your challenge 😘
Unfortunately not he's been here for a few weeks! Thanks xx
are you going to visit your boyfriend in the US this year? how to you pay for the flight when you're doing a no spend challenge??
OMG, the day that you, Blue and Maddie get together in a video/vlog, I will probably have a heart attack lol.
My 3 herooooooooes!!!
Well I guess I'm not surprised that you hang out with Blue, and then my next thought was I would like to hang out with them! LOL someday I'll make it back to Europe.
Hi , i have a question , what is your job ?
I'm a storyboard producer c
Thanks for sharing
awesome
Yayy so inspiring!
