  • John and Marion Wither were from humble Scottish roots but a lifetime of hard work in the Wakatipu allowed them to enjoy a comfortable retirement in Dunedin. Along the way, they were pioneer runholders in the Wakatipu basin and raised a large family in the splendid isolation of Cecil Peak.

I'm pretty sure I have an ancestor that also arrived on the Helensleigh and also settled in the Wakatipu area. While this story is about others, it gives me an idea of life at the time. Thank you.

Superbly done. Epic visuals. True pioneers. ( if you'd like info on the Dickson whanau of Otamita (toku waka City of Dunedin, 1867) out of Leslie, be in touch! 😊)
